If I spray painted indoors I'd probably die - as my misses would kill me  :(

Every now and then, there will be a question in how to decant paint from spray cans for brush painting, airbrushing, etc... Most static modellers will know how to do it but since I am doing it today, I thought I will take some pictures and do a write up about it.

Parts required:

1. Spray paint (obviously)

2. Straw (I use IKEA straws, read on)

3. Glass airtight jar with cap for paint (old paint jars are perfect, I use a Mr Color jar)

4. Cling film

5. Tape and/or bluetac (not always necessary)

Step 1:

Attach straw to nozzle of spray can. The IKEA straws I use fits perfectly over the blue tip of the nozzle. However if your straw is too big to fit securely, use tape and/or bluetac to secure ensuring no leaks.

Step 2:

Clung film the glass jar, poke a hole for the straw to pass through. This hole need not and should not be need as it must not be airtight.

Step 3:

Shake up spray can, stick straw into hole in cling film, spray. Take care when bubbles reach the top (depend on the size of your jar), stop and rest to allow bubbles to go back down.

This is what you will end up with.

IMPORTANT NOTE!

DO NOT COVER UP IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOU HAD DECANTED ENOUGH PAINT.

There are still propellant in the paint to boil off and if you put a cap on tightly, it will blow up the next time you open it, making a huge mess. Allow to air for a few hours, preferably in a warm place (the jar will feel cold due to the boiling process).

The paint is ready for airbrushing right away (the reason I am decanting it) without thinning. If use for brush painting, it will probably be too thin (water like) and leaving uncovered for a longer time will allow it to thicken up. Check regularly until happy.

Finally a short video.

I was shown this method by the tutor of a basic airbrush course I did many moons  ago. My system is identical apart fro the fact that I used a reamer to cut a hole in the spare paint pot top and superglued the straw in. I added a tiny pin hole so that the pressure has somewhere to go. Seems to work well. It produces a paint that is perfect for the airbrush and yes if you leave it uncovered for a while it will thicken for hand painting.

What would you use to clean a paintbrush after you used the decanted PS paints? I'm a bit put off by

it is deadly to your health and dangerous to the model as it melts plastic

I started using an air purifier in my pretend RC shop (originally to control plasticard dust) and it does wonders to remove fumes from paint, thinners, and plastic cement/putty.

I also buy cheap paint brushes in bulk for rough painting so I use that when I do spot repairs for PS paints (usually no need for accurate paint work) and just toss the brush after use.

Air purifier next to my cajon for size comparison..

I'm taking my first tentative steps into decanting and airbrush today 😬😬😬

One thing I have learned so far...

Even in my capacity as your resident eco warrior, I may be forced to admit that drinking straws are not what they used to be...

Sorry pal, paper and liquid don't mix well. I find that IKEA plastic straws work best.

Yeah I know, I it's just that I had today to get some airbrush practise in, but have been without a car a couple of days and my local supermarkets only stock paper ones now. I think there's been a rule change on it actually. I'll order some plastic ones from amazon.

For a single quick decant my paper straws seemed to do the job though. It worked.

I just use my spent Spektrum receiver bubble pack (since I have so many) to spray into and use my brush to do any spot painting.

This is still my approach. easy, mess free, and super easy clean up.  I even use disposable paint brushes for touch ups.  Latest decanting was to touch up gaps around my Beetle's window trim.. Kyosho makes the precut masks just a hair too big or decals are a smidge too small.. or I just suck at decaling..  probably the latter..

Atleast it's fixed..

I think I would have had some success doing similar for my touch ups yesterday, until I damaged the wing I was touching up. But anyway the wing sides I had were tight even for my smallest brush without pulling the channel apart quite hard. I was trying to follow your advice for using PS and a brush for this purpose. I also left it unsealed a few hours to thicken up a little for the brush. For this purpose I decanted separately because I was thinning the paint for the airbrush.

Yeah, after reading your other post I realized you were spraying the entire body with it so my method would not apply..!

The black window lines are fantastic. Did you paint the lexan from the outside with a brush or from the inside and did you mask the borders or did it free hand without trembling ? It's perfect achievement!
