building a paint booth

Recommended Posts

hello everyone. I am new to this site. I have been doing rc vehicles since 1985. After a few yearstook a break. I am now getting back into it again and very much looking forward to it. I have a 3 car garage and want to make a great paint booth. Any suggestions of what to do and use will be greatly appreciated. I also do plastic display models but if I can make it big enough for rc bodies it will work for both. The cost isrealy not a concern I just want it good enough to last about 30 years. Thanks in advance for all your help.

@Lurch 1982 From my limited knowledge I found that the painting area needs to be HVAC controlled so that I can paint rain or shine snow or on a hot and humid summer day.  Unless the garage is HVAC controlled, it is not an ideal area to paint even if one had the space.  I can HVAC the garage, but that can lead to other issues like condensation on my cars and metal tools while opening the garage doors on a humid day, etc.. so I do not run AC in my garage and is vented.

Therefore, I took it a step further by painting in my mudroom while suctioning the overspray and vapor through an HVAC filter into the garage via large capacity exhaust fan installed on my garage.  The booth is a portable ghetto setup where I would set up and break down after each session.  But the setup only takes 2-3min and even less time to break down and clean up.. and is very effective.

If I was to install a permanent paint booth, I would place it in my mudroom with a dedicated vent through the wall to outside.  One benefit is I have immediate access to a sink so that I can wash my airbrush tools on the spot if using acrylics..and do any wet sanding there.

That said, there is no reason to paint in a garage if one can install a permanent high powered vent in a room inside the house.  BTW bathroom vent does not count.. you need a vent powerful enough one can feel a draft while the exhaust fan is on.

Just somethig to think about.

ok thanks for the info. I wont have ac in the garage but will have heat in winter time. Also will have a dehumidifier running on the summertime.

No problem.  I've tried painting in the garage in the past, but it's just not the same as painting inside the house.  In order to get a 3 car garage (yours is 750sq ft?) heat and humidity under control can take a long time before you can get the area ready for paint.. especially since you can't use coil heaters as the fumes can ignite.

If inside the house it takes longer to shake up the cans (or set up my airbrush) vs setting up my ghetto paint booth and start painting.  For example I setup and tore down the paint booth twice today for a 5 min and a 20 min paint session.  Imaging doing that on a cold day in your garage.. or a super humid day.  You'll have to wait a long time just to do a quick touch up, for example... big hassle.

Since my pretend RC shop has a window facing the back yard, in the back of my mind I've been thinking about getting a semi-permanent paint booth duct installed on that window.  This would be for spot painting small parts (ie: Willy’s helmet) or doing spot repairs on RC bodies, powerful enough to do 1:24 models.

This really depends on how much longer I will continue painting in large volume because I am already running out of space to display my cars.. but if I was new, I would definitely consider it.

Just noticed the cost is not a concern but of your post. In that case, something like this will be perfect for you.

Yes, that is the type I would consider installing in my mudroom if going for a permanent installation.
