Sgt.Speirs‘ Nissan King Cab - TRF201 Transmission Conversion & Restoration

Recommended Posts

@Honza: I see there no difference or a offset  bearing on the ball diffs. Only the shims are different (TRF201: 0.1mm on both sides, TD4: 2x 0.2mm on both sides). Or do you meant something else?

@Collin: You have to see what a RC car from the 90s not will be in 2022...a car for bashing. So making big jumps or flying through the air with this car is not the intention for this modification. But you're right there are materials which would be more suitable. On the other side, for the first loop/prototype non-professional FDM parts are sufficient (in my point of view).

Regarding the stress loads on the FDM parts, I see this not so pessimistic. The brackets have to handle mostly compressive loads.

The upper bracket is planar flush with the chassis, so vertical stress loads will be deflect (correct expression?) to the chassis and will not generate (big) deformation/torsion of the bracket itself.

Vertical stress loads = loads from the suspension introduced via the sub-chassis/FRP plate or loads directly onto the sub-chassis/FRP plate

9e0c5128-b7fb-4146-8ojjz2.jpeg

Green the FDM parts, orange the screws/fasteners.

For horizontal stress loads (hard landing onto the motor guard) should be split into the sub-chassis and into the upper bracket. In this load case, the gear case itself is also a supporting element for the upper bracket. So hopefully also no (big) deformation/torsion of the bracket itself.

Maybe at the end of this conversion/mod there is a special TRF gear case with attachments for the King Cab/Hilux MR chassis available. And also the corresponding „sub chassis“ (FRP plate). We will see… :)

That would be great!

I meant distance of the 1015 bearing from "plate" Pictures are from TD4 and TRF201 manuals (sorry for quality I'm on a phone)

@Honza: I have overseen this detail. But maybe this explains the usage of the different shims. Maybe there is somebody with a TD4 chassis can meassure the diff width from bearing (1510) to bearing ;)

From your picture, it seems that difference is at least 5mm. The TD4 is compatible with TA06 gear diff, so I guess that ball diff width on bearings is more or less the same. Different shims will make 1mm difference.

However, TRF201 has steel outdrives, right? They shouldn't wear that much and rest of the diff should be same or at least compatible.

From experience shimming the TD4 ball diff, there may be as much as a 1.5mm difference in width between that and the TA06 gear diff

After two busy weeks at work and preparation of my son‘s birthday I found today time to continue the project.

I knew that I hardly find time in the last weeks and played with the idea to let the sub chassis plate milling by a local company. But I decided to do it manually…this time with no electric tools (except the drilling machine).

The rough shape with the hacksaw…

…the fine shape with the fret saw…

…and the final step with different files.

The plate fits!

Drilling the holes is planned for tomorrow.

One week later, the countersunk holes in the sub chassis plate are drilled and I could started with the final assembly.

I also updated the upper bracket once again. I thicken the transition between the two mountings and I re-designed the front spacer to avoid rotating without using 2-component adhesive (lower bracket on the picture below).

During the last weeks I also started with the assembly of the chassis which I would also like to share with those who are interested.

Step 1:

img_2325lij4e.jpg

Step 2:

img_2327wvkyn.jpg

Step 3 to 5:

img_2329ibkhf.jpg

Step 6 to 7:

img_2341yakwm.jpg

Step 8:

img_2342y8kf4.jpg

Step 9:

img_2343c9jya.jpg

Step 10:

img_2345cjkje.jpg

Step 11 to 20 (assembly of the rear suspension with gearbox) I have already done in the previous post. So we can skip to step 23 where the gearbox with motor is married with the main chassis.

img_2565tsj3w.jpg

img_2567xhkv8.jpg

Step 25 & 26:

img_2569qkj5d.jpg

img_2570i3jeo.jpg

img_25718mkia.jpg

img_2572exjf1.jpg

Step 27* to 29* with the sleeved dampers:

img_2309f8kj1.jpg

img_2312qhje3.jpg

Step 30 to 32:

img_25733hkql.jpg

img_25747pjn7.jpg

Step 33 to 41 (electrics) are skipped.

Step 42:

When I bought the chassis, it did not come with wheels and tires. I decided to use the wheel/tire combination of the Stadium Blitzer for this runner.

img_25763vj7x.jpg

Step 43:

With the blue wheel nuts and in combination with the blue dampers and motorplate the chassis looks very nice in my opinion :)

img_2588p3j64.jpg

img_2591pxk53.jpg

img_25943djuq.jpg

img_2595ofkam.jpg

Now I'm looking forward for some dry or sunny days to make some test drives with the car.

Brilliant mate, you've achieved such a great, high end finish to the work done so far, and not surprising, we've all been able to share the journey with you and seen the methodical level of dedication and accuracy you've been putting in. Bravo buddy, bravo!:)

Although a fan, I don't own this chassis yet, but it would seem nuts not to put this out there in the main stream, so I really hope you doB)

@Sgt.Speirs: Do I see an option on the shocktowers to use the upper holes as shockmounts, too?

Yes but thats for the stock shocks as they are for the long CVAs. The Med Hicaps are shorter.

And some impressions from the carbon fiber sub chassis plate...

img_2602jjkr1.jpg

img_260469j6o.jpg

img_2600xhjy3.jpg

Some edges of the plate are currently not perfect flush with the chassis, but these are some minor changes in the design.

@GermanTA03Guy: Thanks for the tip about the company who milled this plate :)

Before the first test drive I got some aluminum spacers. I decided to replace the FDM part in the front by these.

Ready for the ride (3000KV brushless system @ 2s/4000mA LiPo)…

…on the testing ground…

…and after the successful ride (20 min over my bumpy lawn and my 10 cm high skate ramp).

f108ed91-6a3e-4768-az3k3j.jpeg

Everthing worked fine and the brushless system gave the car a nice boost. I even had to take care, that the car did not make wheelies by driving/accelerating over bigger earthworm hills.
After the ride, no damages are visible on the (3d printed) parts.

Ok, my garden is not representative for a RC track with bumps and jumps, but this will be the next challenge when the track near my home town has opened again.

Only a little sign of life in this build thread here:

Currently I'm waiting for the the body/decals (--> Hilux Monster Racer). In parallel I worked together with @ThunderDragonCy on a transmission case with includes the 3D printed parts of my design. ThunderDragonCy re-designed the transmission case of the TRF201/Zahhak for a gear diff (TA06 Gear diff transmission case for TRF201X and DN01 Zahhak).

So the goal of this merge is a transmission case for the gear diff (e.g. TA06) which fits to the King Cab chassis attachment points.

First design draft:

gearcase_143kfz.jpg

gearcase_2kxk0r.jpg

Due to the gear diff width of the TA06 and the original ball diff width of the King Cab differs only by 1mm, maybe this transmission case will also work with the original sub chassis (frp plate). I will investigate this in the next week(s)...

If there is interest here that this gear case should be available on Shapeways for example...let me know.

And here is the final gear case... @ThunderDragonCy: Thanks for your support :)

gear_case_1ukk0t.jpg

gear_case_2g5jf4.jpg

I printed both parts for the mentioned investigation...with the result that the original sub chassis plate will fit, but with too much compromises (the rear attachement points of the gear case are misaligned with the cassis plate respectively the orignal motor guard cover cannot be used).

img_2988smk19.jpeg

img_2989atj3x.jpeg

img_2983onke5.jpg

The merged upper bracket is flush with the chassis.

img_2979pijpy.jpg

The dog bones have not too much play.

img_29811ljah.jpg

The four mounting holes from the main chassis fits perfect.

img_29827dj4u.jpg

The motor sits in the TRF gear case lower than in the original gear case. In this case the motor almost touch the sub chassis plate, so there is no space for mounting the motor guard cover from the top side of the plate:

img_2975r9jd1.jpg

That means that for this gear case I have to modify the sub chassis plate once again...until the final 3D printed gear case parts will arrive.

Small update for today until the gear case parts arrived from the UK :)

Some other parts arrived the last weeks to completing the look:

img_3057m2j1p.jpg

  • Hi-Lux Monster Racer body from TBG
  • The decal set for the MR from mciracing
  • Original B-Part Tree (TA-10005358) which includes the front bumber
  • Original wheel set (TA-19335083)   --> For both original parts thanks to Simone from Italy :)
  • Front and rear body mounts I created by my own.

For the tires I have not yet made a decision. I am thinking about the following pairings:

1. HPI Front Line + HPI Ground Assault: These were also used from a user here in his showroom >>Fully optioned Monster Racer<<

unbenanntgikpd.jpg

2. Jconcepts Carvers 2.2 + Traxxas Pro-Trax Spiked Tires
