4281 1/8 Nitro Kyosho/Hobao Porsche 959 - It's a big one!

Recommended Posts

So some progress on the 959.

I have now got the 3D printed gear stl from @jonboy1. Once again I am indebted to him for doing this work for me in his own time, it makes these restorations possible.

Gear1.jpg

gear2.jpg

The gear stl has now been sent to be 3D printed in Carbon reinforced nylon. Lead time is about 4 weeks.

With the gear back I will then be able to mount the centre diff, central driveshafts, add the engine and put the throttle linkages in place.

The original black body still needs some 3D work so I have decided to pull one of the bodies off the other Porsche 959 in the restoration queue.

IMG-8371.jpg

IMG-8372.jpg

Its complete but dirty and needs some work. The body has a few rsuty screws that will be replaced

IMG-7235.jpg

and the wipers are broken

IMG-7236.jpg

The wipers are part of the bodyset so unlikely to find originals. I did find some chinese 1/8 scale ones that might just work so will do some trimming of them to see what they are like.

Small bits of progress but a light at the end of the tunnel for this one. 3 more to go!

So yesterday the new 3D printed gears arrived. They look superb in the carbon reinforced nylon

IMG_8433.jpg

IMG_8434.jpg

@jonboy1 had got the 3D design work spot on and snuggly the gears went onto the Diff and were bolted down

IMG_8435.jpg

IMG_8436.jpg

This then allowed me to add the new brake disc, fit the centre diff supports and get the centre diff on the chassis. This was attached to the chassis with new screws adding the driveshafts as I went. Of course with the driveshafts etc in the engine could be aligned and bolted down. So the car now looks like this

IMG-7244.jpg

This weekend I am hoping to get the linkages on and the exhaust tubing all done.

Too many projects, too little time but progress on the old girl!

Managed to make more progress on the 959.

Got the fuel lines run

IMG-8454.jpg

and fitted the silicone exhaust tubing. It's quite hard to find pictures of a new kit and Google shows both clear and black tubing. For the moment I have gone with clear and white ty-wraps however I think this may change. Normally I would Google the part numbers and look at the pictures but parts are so scarce there arent any. I think I will probably replace the white tywraps with black.

IMG-8453.jpg

Refurbished and fitted a period OS Air Filter

IMG-8455.jpg

and fitted the RX.

IMG-8456.jpg

There should be two black rubber bands that hold the RX and the battery box in place but as you can see below they are perished. I think I have matched some in white so will get them and then dye them black with clothes dye.

IMG-8459.jpg

The tyres were treated to some Gummi Pfledge to soften the rubber then the wheels were touched up in places to make them look overall silver. The Pirelli logos were then painted up using a Pilot white fine paint pen. The wheels nuts were tidied up and repainted black. Then the wheels were fitted

s-l400.jpg

IMG-8457.jpg

A few small things to do to finish the chassis as mentioned but she is 99% finished and now looks like this.

IMG-8458.jpg

Body work continues. Almost done for the first of 4 of these.

With some time off from work I have managed to catch up with a few projects.

Got the silver body tidied up, the rusty screws replaced and the Chinese wipers fitted. Very happy with the final look on this one

IMG_8567.jpg

IMG_8566.jpg

I think this one is now finished apart from two things. The rubber band for the RX and I think I will replace the clear exhaust tube with black.

Onto the next!

This one will certainly stay on the shelf. One of the others will get a modern engine and be a runner.

So I think I found the best match rubber bands for the RX and Battery box. Sadly they are in Taiwan so just have to wait for them to arrive.Once they are here I can dye them black.

IMG-8599.jpg

The next 959 is now ready to be started. This one is extensively complete but has a bit more rust here and there. Its fitted with an Enya 21CXL engine which has great compression and wasnt seized.

IMG-8590.jpg

IMG-8591.jpg

Wheels will remain black on this one

IMG-8594.jpg

Some misc parts and the stripped down Enya 21CXL

IMG-8593.jpg

Red 959 body. Pretty good condition

IMG-8595.jpg

Rear window is separate though so will need sorting out and reattaching with new tape.

Not sure if they are the same screws, but Midland Helicopters have screw sets as listed in the back of Landmax 1 manual.

Thanks, I will check it out. Most of the 959 parts are unique to this kit and that makes them scarce however lots of parts are generic across Kyosho and indeed as fastenings globally. The 959 shares parts with Graupner, T2M and Hobao.

So following the same process as the silver 959 I got the red 959 chassis stripped down. It came apart pretty easily with just a few screws needing assistance and/or specialist tools. All the plastic and metal parts went through the Ultrasonic to be cleaned. I then set about polishing up the parts and chemically re-blackening where necessary.

Got the chassis plate primed with 4 coats of zinc primer and now when hardened off will be flatted back ready for the topcoats. The rear metal bumper has a few small nicks that need sanding down first.

IMG-8733.jpg

Started building up the front and rear gearbox assemblies, the centre diff and the steering assy. All new bearings used but this time very few new screws were needed.

IMG-8732.jpg

Servos have been cleaned, tested and the centre points set. Lots more to do but making good progress I think.

Small update on the red 959. I found a brand new Hobao fuel tank on Ebay in the USA however the seller wouldnt ship it to the UK

tank.jpg

The find coincided with a business trip to the USA so a friend purchased it and shipped it to the hotel for me. Perfect timing and as these are hard to get, a real find.

Finished painting the chassis plate and rear bumper so the front and rear gearbox assy was fitted. I also then mounted the engine, the radio plate posts and the new fuel tank. With the tank fitted I could run the fuel lines.

So currently the red 959 looks like this.

IMG_8786.jpg

IMG_8787.jpg

IMG_8788.jpg

I found an original shock repair set which will come in handy and saves me having to match up the o-rings etc.

IMG-8789.jpg

The dampers have been taken apart, drained of oil and the cleaned in the Ultrasonic. The bodies have been primed and repainted satin black and are drying as I type this. The springs are to far gone to be repaired but I have found some online.

Next jobs are restoring the radio plate, fitting the servos and sorting the linkages. With that done I will be painting up the brake calipers (to make them stand out behind the black wheels, fitting the wheels and tyres and fitting the exhaust tubing. That will I think then be the chassis finished.

Almost there on number two.

This is a real labour of love and it shows. All being beautifully restored back to their full glory. Top marks sir!

A small update. I got the 2nd 959 chassis almost completely finished now. Fitted the wheels after removing the flaked silver paint and painted the brake calipers yellow. The contrast looks pretty good I think. Wheel nuts were stripped pf paint and cleaned up on my bench polisher.

IMG-9021.jpg

Chassis now looks like this having fitted the radio deck. Also added an OS HD Air Filter to the engine.

IMG-9019.jpg

IMG-9020.jpg

This one is going to have a red body so did a test fit to see how she looks.

IMG-9022.jpg

The body will get a really good wash then some polycarbonate cleaner. Once dry it will be touched up here and there and have the peeling decals fixed. The wipers as per the silver one are also broken and will get replaced with some nice Chinese copies.

IMG-9023.jpg

Almost there on this one now.

Had a stroke of luck, picked up yet another body in Japan. Red again but will allow me to get all 4 of these back to great condition. Also found a used set of wheels and tyres. These will get the Black damaged one back on its wheels.
