Hi, I need a little help. Now I know that painting PS paint on top of ts paint is a really bad idea..see picture.. How about the other way round, does that work? E. G. Ts clear on a PS paint? Or a layer of ts 44.brilliant blue on top of a layer of ps brilliant blue on a cockpit and rollcage? Thanks, cheersIMG_20211112_202419.thumb.jpg.6cbef5b0bbdd29c187e876295e9578dc.jpg

What happened here? TS is a lacquer spay, it should be very robust once cured, I'm surprised the Tamiya PS has damaged it. I've used Tamiya PS over true acrylics and it hasn't damaged them, and they are a lot less robust than TS laquer.

It seems that PS is quite a hot paint, even Tamiya posted a warning on the product page not to use it anywhere except on PC materials.

No, even Tamiya said not to use them anywhere else.

Well for me the ps paints worked very well on the cockpits (abs?) and on the rollcage (styrene) but not in combination with ts...

This was ps54 on a cockpit, followed by some clear lacquer (different brand), then after a lot of hardening, ps 5 black on top. It ate it away. I thought it was the different brand that caused the problem. But the same happened when I painted a plastic rear wing with ts54, followed with nothing but ps5. Looked like it didn't stick, but also Ate it away...

Well, that will be a "at your own risk" off label use I suppose, as they stated, in red, in the product page not to use it on plastic models (styrene?).

Well that does sound unfortunate. Were you using light coats?

But I'm a little surprised that you've been painting PS over TS anyway, PS is for the inside of a polycarbonate shell, TS is for the outside (I've used it on direct on polycarbonate in the past even though it's not intended for it), PS dries coarse, TS will dry with a good surface finish, and I can't think of a scenario where I would be going over the top of TS with PS.

As opposed to ts colors mostly being rather glossy... And I had made good experiences painting bodyshell wings with ps. So I usually didn't want to buy every color both in ts AND ps... I thought it to be a little bit of a marketing hoax that you always need to buy both.

This thread reminds me of my Willy figure (Jack Osbourne body) I recently painted..  I used Testor's enamel and it is reacting with the original finish or the plastic itself..  Initially it appeared the paint dried like normal with no adhesion issues.. then in 2 weeks time, the paint has become sticky and shiny..   not sure what to do.   No idea whether Tamiya primer would have helped or not.

I've been consulting my wife for her comments on making a mold from his body and to possibly doing a plaster casting.

I don’t think you will see this but casting something like those figures is actually really easy. Just need some good quality plaster, wax and Vaseline (petroleum spirit).

the osborne figs are articulated poseable, would complicate duplication somewhat - I’d never be able to decide which pose I want permanent ^_^

If you had a donor figure you could cast each articulated limb in resin… endless configurations possible ;)

Yeah, me too.   If the paint can allow itself to settle and cure on its own, I'd like to just leave him be.. will check back in a few months.

@Duane Hampton Thanks, man. ^_^

I think that is "rubber rot" or "rubber cancer".

The figure is not Hardplastik, or is it?

If there is rubber in the Plastic or in the original Finish, the rubber starts to melt.

You can see that Problem on "soft touch" Stuff as Carinteriors, old MP3 Players, Cellphones, analouge Sticks of Gaming Controllers, etc.

The Rubber reacts to sunlight, thinners, oils, Heat and other Stuff.

First it will get Sticky, and after a looong Time it gets crumbely....

I have that Problem with some Simpsons figures that i bought for a King Yellow.....

I don't know how to paint them because they have that soft feeling and i think that the Paints would melt the Plastic or Paint.

Would varnish create the same reaction? I’m wondering if you could ‘seal’ the surface with a varnish and then spray primer. A lot of effort involved though…

Yeah, it is soft plastic and sounds like that is EXACTLY what's going on.

My Funko-Pop figures are soft rubbery plastic too, but no issue with enamel on those.  Which is why I did not suspect anything would happen on the Jack Osbourne figure if I painted him.  Oh well, it's fine.. I took more pictures today with his new 'RC' Beetle for safe keeping (posted in the pictures-only thread).
