Project Ultra Hornet

Recommended Posts

Cy..... this is mind blowing!! As most brilliant ideas/home-brew modifications are.

As @JakeRobb mentioned, probably thinking like myself, an experienced auto mechanic... The tie rods not matching the lower A-Arm length, invariably leads to some degree of bump steer....

How much is objectionable is entirely up to the user. He/She has to like the end result. In a RC car, some people get completely OCD.... like ME! 😜

From what I've seen and read, your Ultra Hornet handles quite well. You seem like you nearly have the tuning sorted, and it just keeps getting better!! I'm just impressed!! 🤩🙏💯

You just gave me a bug.... I've got a GHII and a Fire Dragon. Do I have what I need to get started? Oh, I've also got a Holiday Buggy!

I'm probably making shock towers and upper and lower plates out of 2.5mm thick Kydex sheets. I've used it several times, and it's quite strong, with just enough flex not to break. And as much as I really want to support you for all the hard (read:way too enjoyable) work you do...

I'm afraid I'll never have the budget for Shapeways. I will try to get some of the most critical bits (front A-Arm mount, lower Gearbox mount, and that clever rear upper mount that clamps both sides of the tub). But I'm sadly limited...

BUT, how nice it would be to have a GHII that can outrun the sum of the parts to make it!!

Cheers and thank you 😊

Tamiya Junkies December 23

Track day. Surprisingly nice enough to run on the big outdoor track. Ultra Hornet was brilliant. Love this thing. Had someone very impressed by it wondering how I was driving so fast because thry have a Super Hornet. Showed them the conversion and his son was really excited to do a build on his proper Super Hornet. Going to send him the files. Would love someone to build another.

No photos, but Ultra Hornet was fantastic today. Brilliant conditions on the outdoor trqck so i did a load of laps. There were a bunch of fast boys tuning race buggies today and my bag of tamiya plastic was certainly not enbarassed. Nowhere near as fast obviously, but certainly looked like it belonged. Chuffed!

Little note to say the Reedy Rage Type R 27t / 24 deg timing old stock race motor i have in this is brilliant. Properly fast, but really lovely to drive. Wish i could find another couple!

Tamiya Junkies sounds like a load of fun. I bought disc wheels pre-glued with (yellow) mini pin rears and (silver) cut stagger fronts for my homebrew buggy (Schumacher website, very limited choice with most things out of stock) and coincidentally looking at yours up there it looks like that's roughly what you run? Is that a pretty ideal combo for somewhere like this?

It's mint! Would be lovely to see you at one.

Tyres-wise, yes, it's running minipin and cut stagger, but both yellow. I run cut stagger fronts on everything. Anything more toothy just has way too much bite on astro, and the cut staggers work pretty good on dry grass too. All my other buggies run schumacher rears of varying flavours, but current fave are mezzos, but anything vaguely spiky seems to work, from minispikes to darts to those i mentioned above.

Got a photo with an original!

20240316_122904

Lad at tamiya junkies has an original and is making an Ultra version using some of my bits.

Track day and outdoor astro was great. Ran nice this morning, but definitely had a lot more ride height at the rear. Noticed this before, but today with grip and speed it felt a bit "tippy". Didn't actually flip though. Before i left i emptied a battery with Ultra Hornet with the rear shocks moved up a hole on the Top Force rear tower. Now when running it looks more even, but it was also really good to drive. Even jumped ok! Very good.

Didn't take a photo, but ran huge number of laps on the outdoor astrk at RHR today and it was sn absolute joy. Fast, precise, fun, brilliant. With the breakages on Ultra G EVO and how much that has fought me, wondering if j might have jumped the shark with that and Ultra Hornet is the perfect "silly GH2 mashup" based conversion.

Does the Ultra Hornet have a shorter wheelbase than the Ultra G EVO Black ed. ?

Yes a little bit. It's about 270. Ultra G EVO is 277.

That’s a slight difference.  Do you think the DT02 suspension arms on the Ultra Hornet move the axles forward relative to the C.o.G position?  If so, it would place more load on the rear axle in the Ultra Hornet.

If anything the wheels are further forward on Ultra G EVO. At the moment this is all hand waving really. I will get the arm mount beefed up and another made and see if i can dial it in from there.

Literally just bought a nib rising fighter lol

I won't be going to the same lengths as the Ultra Hornet though... wheels and tyres, decals, Cvas 540 Torque tune GH2 gearbox with 3D printed axle brace and M3 track rods. It's for my youngest boy

@ThunderDragonCy@ThunderDragonCy I have some gearbox questions...

I'm planning on using a GH2 gearbox, will the Rising Fighter gear set work with it?

CVA50519 and CVA50520 the right oil shock kit?

I'm ordering the decals from MCI, £24 delivered to the uk

I'll be using the lower axle suspension mount from the GH2 as the Super hornet part isn't available and it's £30+ from AmPro which I can't justify atm

I'm using the JC racing wild one wheels in orange, will I need to glue these tyres to the rims(I've only had GH/Hornet rims to deal with so far)...

I'm thinking of using this too, any advice?

That's it... I think lol

No idea. Sorry. I have never used either. You can check part numbers if you download the manuals. Just google "tamiya manual download"

Yup

Not unusual

Mine have been fine with no glue on Schumacher tyres with foam inserts rear.

Not seen this before. Regular uprights will be fine. You don't need half of that gubbins. It's for f1 chassis

OK mate, I'll just buy the parts bag of gears + bearing set for the GH2 box, my mate was round with his Rising Fighter for me to look at as the kit won't be here till later this week

As for the lower rear suspension mount I think that the GH2 parts tree comes with the Rising fighter as well as the GH2 front arms etc

I didn't realise the that front uprights were for the F1 cars, thank God I asked lol have seen Carbon Reinforced one, they probably will be for the F1 too maybe.

Was tempted on buying a used Super Hornet on Ebay tonight, starting bid at £200 and whatever postage. Decided against it because it for my 10 year old and it would just get thrashed to death 🤣🤣🤣

Ran Ultra Hornet at the club astro today as a comparison for Ultra G EVO. Still delightful to drive!

20240807_111759 20240807_111816

Much more planted and traction rich rear end than Ultra G EVO. You just hit the throttle and it goes. Also, the Reedy Rage Type R i have in this is waaaaay faster than the Superstock BZ in Ultra G EVO. Surprisingly so.

The only thing i would say having run the cars back to back is that Ultra Hornet isprobably a bit under damped. It's a bit bouncy and slaps the floor a bit much. I think upping the oil weight all round will be worth a try.

Here is a bit of running video

Just making a note for myself here: upped oil weight to 400 all round from 300 previously.

As mentioned in the last post, the buggy runs great but is a bit bouncy. Going back through the build thread i ended up with 300cst front and rear. Gone up to 400 to hopefully maintain the balance but keep some control.

I've got most of the parts bought for my Super Hornet build, just rear shocks, axle brace, stickers and electrics to buy now before I build it up. Hopefully early November it will be done 👍

And I've ordered the 3D printed and carbon parts I need to include the linkage steering I put on Ultra G last year:

if you don't mind me asking, is there a way to obtain the STL or Step file for this front brace?
Only reason i'm asking is that i know shapeways is gone and i'm trying to do something similar to a CW-01 Pajero/Montero, only with a DT-03 gearbox.

Ran at the track today. The thicker oil was spot on. Much less bouncy, but handling was still lovely.

20241019_130821

Really need to bite the bullet and rebuild it onto a new tub though. The broken side bumper mounts are becoming increasingly problematic. Might need some less grippy rears too. The minipins are amazing, but possibly a little much for the fronts. I run Mezzos on everything else. Minor things though. Was lovely.
