LOL, ... love the driver's expression.  Good choice!!

I'm a big LotR's fan and I've always thought the mouth of Sauron would make an interesting driver figure.

Put all the old parts and some new on a new chassis. Had to replace some gears and the spur gear cover ,  it was full of dirt.

A few problems, the front and rear diff covers are letting in dust. Have to make some gaskets.

Big tires are just for fun.

Looks great!  By chance, have you given any thought to adding LED's to the headlights?

I really want working lights but the buckets included with the kit don't appear to be made to accept LED's.  Any recommendations?  Is it simply a matter of drilling a 3mm hole then maybe using hot glue to secure the bulb?

Exactly what I did.  Glue gun so it is reversible.  The rear lights is a different project

Leaning into the Kommandeurwagen/Volksrod feel i got when it was fully gray i decided to style the number plate on that and what the combo actually is, a Sand Scorcher TT02B.

It is, yes.

I printed it in TPU so its flexible and sandwich mounted with ears going up to use the screws of the stock bumper and the center screw below in the middle.

Figure the flex will take up a little extra of any hits.

Its quite heavily plastidipped to fill in layer lines and then painted silver.

Thanks :)

In that case im pretty sure i wont need to wish you a good day :D

I went to sweden rock festival for over a decade straight and travel fell on the same day as travel for Bug Run so the multiple hour car ride was always lightened up from seeing lots of cool volkswagens along the way :)

Went out for a first run, it brought a big smile :)

The motor was quite hot after the run, possible because i had the tub cover on which restricts airflow a bit but with the sand being kicked around i certainly think having the cover on was the right idea.

Gonna pick up one of those clip on heat sinks to help with dissipation a bit.

Its a bit slower than i had anticipated but a lot of fun to drive.

Gonna try to pop over to a local track on saturday morning, newbie hours ;)

Looking good B). Like a lowered Monster Beetle with the stance of the Blitzer. If you run the TT motor I think the speed is pretty decent.

The kit came with a TT motor so its already in there, surprisingly it also came with a carson 3s dragster esc so i might pop one of my 3s 1000mah 60c batteries just to see what that does.

How ever that would make the motor even toastier before i get that heatsink.

Put in as much wheel arch as possible to help keep debris out, i think having the back of the front wheel well and front of the back wheel well covered will help a lot.

EDIT: Link to download my rear louvres remix.

New driver head, wheels and rear windows louvres.

Not shown is the motor heatsink and further dirt shielding added along the edge of the tub, going up about 4cm and touch the inside of the shell most of the way around except for a spacer across the rear diff/body mount, i think im abandoning the original tub cover i made as it didnt allow for much airflow so the motor got really hot after running a pack.

Louvres are printed in PLA, the green printed in TPU, its flexible and screws to the hole in the blue bit, holds the louvres into the window.

Here is what i did with my DT02:

Custom front arms for narrower tread and shorter wheelbase, custom mount for a Sand Scorcher shell.

Mounts-smaller.thumb.jpg.3ef335d159d7a181dfd00570921b1220.jpgIMG_20220411_180603.thumb.jpg.64d115f9de9fa0a52474a2d84d75ad0f.jpg

Printed off new front arms from here:

They are mounted but i havnt taken new pics, they look much nicer than the ones i remixed for myself.

Today ive been building a modified Grasshopper chassi intended to become a Sand Hopper :)

All together.

Updated front suspension with double wishbones from HERE.

Hornet style rear suspension with center gearbox brace from HERE.

IMG_20220423_175058.thumb.jpg.860c3d6dc4ef9a779e8221e78308cfeb.jpg

Modified the the battery compartment by cutting the whole back of it away in order to fit my 2s 5000mah battery, also made holes in the top of the compartment so the battery/balance cables are protected inside the tub, also used spacers to mount the servo tilting forwards to be able to get the battery in, can be seen in the first pic.

I edited the gearbox brace part to fully cover the back of the battery, it also has a post to use a body clip for holding the battery door on.

Now im looking at how to put a beetle shell on it :)

Wow, what an improvement over the stock configuration.  These mods should definitely move the hopper up a few notches.

The rear suspension is interesting.  Someday, I'd like to take a crack at designing a gear box case that locates the motor a little lower and closer to the pivot - to lower CG and reduce un-sprung weight.

Definitely not a necessity -- more of a 'just for giggles' design exercise than anything else.

Of course, I'll need to get a hopper first but I'm working on that.  :)

That would probably help it quite a bit.

The original gearbox could have been rotated a bit forward and honestly its sort of odd it wasnt done when they designed it, it would have done what you suggest.

Right, got mounts made :D

Bolts into the chassi using what i think are regular body mount points.

Looks like someone decided to get ahead of you on doing something similar:

Ill be ordering the parts needed and waiting for the files to drop, the poster said in the comments that they will be available in a week or so :D

On my end i decided to trim the front of the chassi a bit, notch out the bottom of the front bit of on the shell a little, go at the window trim with a sharpie, print side view mirrors+a bumper+plastidip those and print headlight fixings.

I figured that since i wouldnt be using the chrome mirrors anyways i could skip buying that sprue and just make my own fixings for the headlights to save a bit of cash.

That transmission and suspension conversion looks great.

This is a bit more complex than what I had in mind but very cool nonetheless.  :D

Yah, having the motor further forward, hard mounted and wheels on swings it why im excited about that upgrade, less unsprung weight.
