Joe’s Racing Fighter

Recommended Posts

Getting back into the hobby again after a 10 or so year absence.
I recently got my old Keen Hawk DF03 up and running, and my son loved it so much I don’t get a go anymore!

Ive always fancied a two wheel drive buggy so ordered myself a Racing fighter to go with my Hawk.
It all arrived today so the build begins!

The Racing Fighter is a great 2wd buggy. Especially as it comes with CVA dampers out of the box. Have fun!

Nice! I built one of these over Christmas! It's a really good build and runs very well on the kit supplied CVAs and torque tuned motor. It's my bashing buggy and I don't go mental with it by any stretch, but it's doing very well.

Enjoy mate! Are you going box art with the colour?

Managed to make a start on it last night, although ran in to troubles mounting the steering servo, at first I thought it was the Kimbrough servo saver, so swapped out to the kit one.
Eventualy I realised that the edge of my Etronix ET2070 was catching in the chassis. my handy Philips head shows which edge

this isn’t something I had read about in the forums, I managed to get it to fit by creating a chamfer in the edge. I’m not overly happy with it but it will get me moving along.
so a different servo is on the list to purchase, it will probably get added along with a alloy servo mount some time in the future.

last nights progress.

My wife and son both want me to go Blue, so I expect that’s what I’ll do. I have seen a post where some one used a translucent Blue and backed it with silver to give a candy effect, so might give this a go. If I find the post again I’ll post a link to it

trip to my local model shop tomorrow morning to see what paint they have

Whilst you are at the build stage, get some of these and stick them all around the front of the chassis

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-Adhesive-60g-Strips-Of-Stick-On-Wheel-Balance-Weights-Engineered-in-Germany-/313909186441?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0

I managed to stash about 50 grams on the top of the servo mount, on the top and sides of the tub around the steering on mine. Makes such a big difference.

Other thing I would recommend is buying some new front tyres immediately. Those deep ribs are completely useless in everything except deep sand or gravel. Schumacher cut stagger slim yellow would be my suggestion for a good all rounder.

Enjoy the rest of the build!

Hmmmm. Did I hear PS-49? A really beautyful color. B).

The tire-suggestion from ThunderDragoncy is a good one. Just buy it and be happy.

Translucent blue backed with silver sounds lovely. Last body I did is a translucent Red backed with bright gunmetal and it's a lovely rich colour.

Echo here too @ThunderDragonCy's suggestions. I'd get harder springs for the rear too from the outset.

Loads of other hop ups and mods but most are probably things to do as and when you break or wear out something. Eg I've done stuff which I think has made a big difference in our use but which no one else bothers with.

Thanks, I have read a lot about adding front weight and swapping out tyres, it’s something I will do but I want to have that comparison for myself, so that I can see the difference as I modify.
I forgot to take a picture of the chamfer I added to the servo, although this servo is called a standard one, it seems alot over sized compared to the one in my keen hawk!

I was amazed at how much material I was able to remove, I felt sure I was going to create a hole in the casing!

whilst I was there I finished off the front end.

body shell next, will need to sort some paint.

Then I guess it will be time to start the hop ups!

Painted and stickers on. Not a great paint job by me. It was cold and rushed as I wanted it done for the weekend. Not overly worried as it’s going to be driven by my 8 year old anyway!

Going with @ThunderDragonCy suggestion I’ve got some Schumacher cut staggers for the front.
