Sgt.Speirs' Dyna Blaster

@Kol__: The chassis parts were manufactured by a company here in Germany which provide a milling service.

Regarding alloy parts…to be honest I thought about alloy parts (bulkhead, rear suspension blocks), but the these parts on eb*y are expensive (although they are looking amazing).

The bulkhead D5 and the kick-up E4 have already been replaced by self-printed parts in PA (FDM) and both survived the Tamico Off-Road Cup without any problems.
And for the rear suspension blocks I went with parts in PA12 (MJF).

So currently are only the suspension arms, the steering knuckle arms and the front body mount original (plastic) parts😜

Ah I see l, so did you spec the chassis and have this company mill it for you? I can see myself wanting to follow this same route at some point in the future, so thought it would be good to gain some knowledge now.

Yeah the alloy parts can add up to be pricey, but the quality is very good from Custom RC for example and the price per part is actually very reasonable, for what goes into manufacturing then, but they do tot up to a fair old amount if you buy the full set. Plus there is the questionable issue of shock transfer to more critical or expensive parts of you replace some with alloy.

Good to hear you've had such great success with the 3D printed parts, sounds like you're becoming a bit of an expert now buddy💪💪😎👍

Yes, I measured out the positions of all screw holes of the plastic chassis and transfered these to a carbon chassis.

In this case, the carbon chassis also works with the original parts (bulkhead, front bumper/kick-up plate,...) and I could derive additional carbon plates for the plastic chassis (which is mandatory for the Tamico Cup) from this "master chassis":

Ahm guys, this aluminum parts on ebay for Dyna Storm etc. is a full set for about 160(?)€ incl. shipping for a fit and forget solution. They fit so fine and they are fxxxing cheap for what they are.

That's pretty much what I said above buddy, I have that very same set fitted to my Dyna Storm runner, plus 3D printed parts☺️

160€ + Import taxes here in Germany = ~190€

You’re right with your view what they are…milled parts.
But they are expensive for me and the  benefit in my case. The only weak point for my use cases are the rear suspension blocks. And for 190€ I can print a lot of these parts.

At the end you strengthen one part and the next weaker part breaks. And it‘s better a cheap (and easy to source) part will break than another one (e.g. suspension arm, chassis plate,…).

Last weekend the weather was excellent and I decided to do a first test run (complete 4000 mAh lipo battery) on tarmac in front of my house.

Everything was fine: The car drove great and gearbox ran smoothly and without issues…great feeling.

 

In the next time I will do further runs and will check after that the gear wheels for wear before I will go on the race track.

Today is the day we have the first meeting/event on the outdoor track in Laupheim. Weather is fine and the anticipation too :)

My Dyna Blaster is prepared in Tamico Offroad Cup spec (except the original plastic chassis)…

@ruebiracer: The weather was great and the atmosphere was excellent 😊

And the gearbox also ran smoothly and without issues. But I struggled with the track, especially with the small double-jump after the big overpass. Maybe the different gear ratio (compared with the config last year) was the reason why I didn't get this section so well.

But let me explain it in a nice way…now I‘m a professional in exchanging front hubs and rear suspension blocks 😉

I read in the other thread, that there were some breakdowns.-_-

But hubs and suspension mounts are easier to fix than a complete chassis.:ph34r:

The double jump looks tricky, saw @wtcc5´s video from last year with the Top force. Would also be my problem, to have the courage to take it as one big jump and hope the car can stand it. I´m lacking real offroad track driving, as I´m racing onroad only since 1997 in some local races.

I hope and guess the track in Kinzigtal is not as hard as Laupheim to the cars. But maybe I should plan to take some spare parts with me, too.

Anyway, can imagine the fun you had together.;)

It's been a long time since the last update here.

Last month I found time for two practise days on the local track...and the most important thing: Both days without any technical issues or damages on the car.
But there is always something that can be done to improve durability or reduce maintenance time.

But first some impressions from the day…

...the Blasters during the break for loading the batteries:

During maintenance after the first training day at the beginning of August, I saw that one of the diff joints was badly worn. There was a large groove from the drive shaft like here on an old picture from @wtcc5:

@wtcc5 uses in his Dyna Blaster the aluminum diff joints with plastic blades on the drive shafts. But the aluminum diff joints are slightly shorter (complete diff in sum 3.0 mm) and I didn’t want to modify or adjust the rear track/hub.
In this case I decided to modify the steel diff joints (with a Dremel) so that the plastic blades would also fit.

For the second practise day end of August, I made some changes in the electrics - new shorty LiPo batteries instead of stick packs and a Hobbywing 1080 (from my Crawler) instead of the 1060 – only for comparison.
I drove five battery packs and tested different gear ratios to find out which suits best to my driving style.
And I also “tested” my new (TBG) body with a new color scheme.

Unexpectedly, I got a part from Kevin with which I can replace one of the last remaining original parts that is not specified for the Tamico Offroad Cup...a carbon plate to replace the G2 part.
With additional TRF41x/TB Evo front body mounts, it looks durable. And now it is also possible to mount the body at the front in a higher position so that the body will be less damaged by an front impact/crash.

@guggles: To be honest, my car isn't bulletproof with all the 3D printed parts, but now it works well with my (improving) driving skills (I visited an RC track for the first time in my life in 2023) and less heavy impacts as a result.

But 3D printing helps to save original parts and allows us to run vintage cars with less risk of total loss, as there are no spare parts available😊

The car takes the jumpsuiten really harmonic. It's looking good for the coming Tamico offroad cup round.

Today there is also from my side a short summary of the Tamico Offroad Cup 2024 in Laupheim.

First surprise for me and my friends who were several times before there for training sessions...they had changed the track layout and some sections of the track had to be run in the opposite direction.
Unfortunately, the weather on Saturday was rainy and cold. Just drizzle, but it kept the track wet through this.

As in the previous training days, the truck ran well and the changeover to wet conditions was no real challenge for the Dyna Blaster. I loosened the slipper clutch a little and that was it.

In my four training sessions I was constantly second behind my friend Kevin (@wtcc5). And the contender with the third Dyna Blaster I could keep safely behind me.

For the qualification run (starting order of the first final), the five fastest consecutive laps counted. Result of these five laps: 10s behind Kevin and 24s ahead of third place.

The first two (of five) finals had the same results: Kevin first and I second...both times one lap behind.
Then in the third final, Kevin touched the barrier in first position and the steering link popped off. While he was repairing his car, I had enough time to pull out a lead that lasted until the end. First place for the first time…
The same thing happened again in the fourth final: Kevin had to repair his car again on lap two, which was enough for me to take first place again.

So the last/fifth final has had to bring the decision between us both. Starting from first position, I made a mistake on the double jump while battling with Kevin for first position. And the result...

After all my rivals had passed me, I tried to get back to the front, but second place (behind Kevin) was all I could manage. A good second place in the end :)

And the winner shot of our team. My friends and me could achieve 7 of 18 podiums in the Truck class, Retro 2WD, Retro 4WD and Wheelie class…what a successful weekend.
