My clod is running on the engine's out of the box, I have two new Mabuchi RS 540's race tuned engine's laying around would it make a difference if I fitted them or are they the same. 

Sorry if the question sounds daft but I'm not tec minded & new to rc cars.

We call them motors :)  Anything that burns fuel is an engine, anything powered by electricity its a motor.  

Anyway - Nto familiar with those exact motors, but as long as they are zero timed they will work fine.  The Clod motors run in opposite directions so they must be zero timing.  I run Torque Tuned motors in a few Clod and have recently been told by a TC member (I think @Wooders28 mentioned it in another thread) they are timed but I haven't noticed, so you can always try and see how it goes.

Aye, timed motors will go quicker in one direction.

There's a couple of companies that make timed motors to run in each direction, (Traxxas Titan springs to mind, but they're 550 motors...), they're not cheap, and for just one of those motors, you can get 2 x 15t firebolts, but need an 860 or 880 esc...
