Tamiyaclub Official Top 10 Fastest RC'ers (Part 3)

Recommended Posts

Background

Many years ago @Jason1145 started the original Tamiya speed run thread,  he suggested ownership of the thread should be changed as he's increasingly busy with other things in real life. Part 2 was then created and maintained by @speedy_w_beans, and now it is time to pass the thread on again. Jason and Speedy, your enthusiasm for Tamiya and your generosity maintaining the threads for us deeply appreciated!

For historical purposes, here are the original threads:

How To Enter:

Please include the following information when you submit a speed run entry:

  1. Model of your car and which category it is going into.
  2. The top speed in mph and kph, and measurement evidence as stated in the rules.
  3. Your car's setup including:  battery, ESC, motor, gearing, and tires.

If I miss a speed run and don't update the tables, please PM me.  I'm generally on TC at least a few times per week.

The Rules

  1. Each member can enter as many cars as he wants but only one car will be entered per member in the 'Overall Fastest Tamiya' category.
  2. Speed runs will be accepted if shown on video; acceptable methods include:
    • On-board GPS:  This shows the car at a standstill with a GPS device mounted showing 0 mph / 0 kph, then show the car go on it’s speed run and come back to show the GPS recorded speed.
    • Radar gun: The car can be filmed going past a hand-held or tripod-mounted radar gun.
    • On-board FPV video:  This shows video from the car itself with the speed displayed on the screen
  3. Speed runs must have the body shell mounted on the chassis; this can be the original Tamiya shell or a Lexan/hardbody aftermarket one.
  4. To qualify for a Tamiya category you must use original model-specific gearbox casings and internals.  Tamiya high-speed gear sets and aftermarket internal gears fitting inside stock Tamiya gearboxes and on stock gear shafts are also allowed.
  5. If you modify a Tamiya RC with a third-party gearbox, modify the stock gearbox in any way (holes or drilling to accept different gears not intended for that chassis), or custom-build a gearbox yourself you will be entered into the "Custom Modified Tamiya RC" Category.
  6. Silver can entries:  You MUST show the silver can motor in the speed run video.
  7. For a speed run to count it must be a clean run, no crashing/tumbling/etc, also continuous video of run, no edits/cuts.

Awesome. I'm going to make a couple of quick drives to go in this. I've picked up a small 2030, 7200 KV motor. Will need to find a way to do speed tests, I may be able to do something with my smart watch as it has a maximum speed function.

When I first started doing runs I used a $10 gps/speed thing designed for a bicycle, worked ok but had to maintain speed for quite a while to get a accurate reading. That would usually lead to me running to a longer distance than I should have and had many crashes a a result, and the gps would always go flying and get pretty messed up. Still works but I switched to a better one with faster refresh rate, still crash and gps still finds a way to detach and fly, but at least it’s less frequent now:lol:

Little update for the list.

Just a sedate 155mph to start the new thread...😳🤣

Superb run mate, you're eyesight is better than mine!!

My plans-

I've managed to get all the parts, to get the Dark Impact rebuilt, not sure if the dboot hoons are the right choice of wheel/tyre, and/or it was the worn stock plastic hubs that made it a handful on my last pass (didn't post it, as it didn't net any improvement, struggling to keep it straight, and a melted spur with excessive slipper slippage...).

2020-08-18_11-08-23

The new body is already painted, so some progress...

This time I'll be doing away with the body posts, which should mean the motor cooling fan can be screwed down better.

Also took advantage of the cheap Amazon DT03's, netting a Neo Fighter and a Racing Fighter , although recon I'll part out one, which I'm hoping will fund some go faster goodies to beat that Mr @stew_mac..🤔🤞

With a race truck, a couple more race cars ,an original and a re release Ultima to run, I'm hoping to up my ,number of cars run tally too 😁

First try to get an official speed run entry. It's my M-05, on a silver can, 22T pinion and 33T spur gear on 3S. Can go in the FWD Tamiyas and Silver Can Tamiyas category.

I hope just putting the link to youtube will work.

Top speed according to the GPS was 42 km/h or calculated 26,1 MPH

List updated

@Tamiyastef you have the grasshopper up and running again? Mine was a handful to run, did about 20 passes and almost every one ended in a crash. Luckily no breaks but each time the steering would be severely different the following run adding to the difficulty of keeping it straight, that and I forgot to check if my tires were glued (they were not and of course they kept coming off ). Was planed on being just a fun use whatever laying around build but I had too much fun with it, and started ordering stuff to make it a little better/faster.

Yes indeed I have my Hopper ready for a new attempt. Thanks for updating the list. 👌

Well, today I learned the hoppers suspension can’t handle 38mph plus all that well lol . Seemed to lift and start bouncing around violently, shocks kept coming apart in the tumbling. Ended up upside down in a huge puddle a few times.

Forgot my camera too so can’t make any official runs, trying out a new location that seemed alright but too much debris for f1 chassis to run :(

Too bad about the debris for the F1 cars. Good to know about the Grasshoppers rear shocks, I'll check them after every pass to see if there still together but I don't think I have to worry yet, it's still on a silver can. Gonna try a new location also tomorrow, hope all goes well.

Yeah should be good unless you crash, though I’m wondering if it was the reason my steering was so different every pass last time. Was hoping to keep suspension stock on this but unless I have a perfect surface I don’t think it’s gonna be possible. Gonna try another new location tomorrow, hopefully I’ll have better results and remember to bring my camera lol.

Good luck on your location and runs, can’t wait to see yours can do!

Messed with the suspension a bit trying different shocks I had, but nothing would work right so back to the original :(. Tightened the steering a bit and moved the servo around so it could move more freely, so that along with the wider and heavier front wheels will hopefully help make keeping this thing going straight a bit easier.

For me so far no issues with the shocks but servo saver popped out, got it reattached with some treadlock.  Got confirmation again I'm not good at all at multitasking. Driving and filming is one thing too much for me. So a next attempt will be made as soon as I can convince someone to go along just for filming. Other spot seemed not ideal but maybe the servo screw was already loose there so will try the spot again next time.

I had the trouble at first too (and sometimes still do lol) I originally tried the camera attached to a hat, seems like the perfect solution, films whatever I’m looking at, but didn’t work well for me. So now I just mount the camera to the controller with two sided tape.

Sorry to hear that, can’t wait to see how your hopper does and see if what I’m trying is helping or making it worse, or maybe I’m just a horrible driver

I got to try a new location today and it wasn’t too bad, turned in the wrong drive on the way over and think I might have another new location to try next time. So far nothing beats my normal spot, think it’s a half mile, newly made nice flat road that serves a new office building that seems to be empty. But for some reason lots of people have been driving down it lately (not going to office and road basically leads nowhere) making runs difficult.

On to the runs today, grasshopper was much more manageable, until I broke it , brought out the Volvo and forgot to turn off the drag brake, so every time I let off the trigger it’d nose dive and flip, or would happen when I went out of range if I was going to fast. If I put the bearings in I’m thinking I’ll get the top spot on the 6wd list. The P34 was able to make some passes, but had lots of issues with grip while slowing down and having too much power and losing traction, I need a longer run and way better eyesight . Uploading/reviewing videos now to see if any qualify.

I had no idea speed runs (and I'm only in the silver can category for now) were so hard for the cars. Lots of broken parts and I think Tamiya tolerances are greatly responsible for the biggest part of all the wobbling and vibrations...  Still having fun though.

39mph grashopper... stopped by a curb. Was afraid it'd flip if I turned and make the run not count, but the curb finished it off anyway , oh well just have to try again

Yeah I thought the same, figured wouldn't be much crashing just driving straight(ish) on a flat road, man was I wrong  and all the wobbling does add to the fun/challange, at least for me.

Yes indeed, more wobble, more fun 🤣

I have my phone as a camera clipped in a selfiestick and I hold that with the same hand as my transmitter. It seems it's very hard for me to keep my eyes on the car and on the camera (to check it's still showing the car and not an empty road) at the same time.

About half a mile (800 meters) sounds ideal. My current spot is only a 100 meters, the new one I tried is about 400 meters I guess but not flat and some potholes and seams that worry me.

I'll have to keep on looking for a better spot if I ever want some brushless Speed runs...

Wish I would’ve thought of a selfiestick, or a phone mount now that I think of it. I would’ve just taped it to the bottom of the transmitter and saved myself the cost of a camera. Too late now . For awhile I just took note of how I was naturally holding the transmitter while driving, then taped the cam mount so it’d point straight in front of me with slight downward angle. I rarely worry if it’s getting the video, seems to do the job nicely most times, can be hard to see the screen from time to time though to make sure I’m getting speed or motor in view
