Tamiyaclub Official Top 10 Fastest RC'ers (Part 3)

Recommended Posts

This is for the RWD entry.

I made some changes to my CW-01 to revert it back to a stock, unmodified gearbox.

- Tamiya Lunchbox

- 21T pinion, 47T spur

- 4.5T brushless motor

- 2S LiHv 4800 mAh battery

- Balloon slicks with 12mm hex wheels on the rear and small buggy wheels/tires on the front

- Stock Lunch Box Body

- 57 mph / 91.7 kph

I would have preferred a cleaner run. I lost it on the deceleration. I don't know if it counts if you crash, but I'll keep working on getting a run that I can roll away from.

I can't find it, but sure it was decided, we needed to make a clean run, as tumbling can give a false GPS reading.

Edit- found it !

Just added it to the rules so its official. I honestly thought it was in there already, as I remember it being discussed a couple times. Its the reason I got into the habit of pressing record, drive as fast as I can one way, bring it back slowly so I don't crash on the way back, check speed, stop recording, repeat. Every time I would do a few runs at a time before checking the speed I would keep pushing it more and more and eventually crash, usually on a obviously slower run or messing about turning the car around, but since I couldn't prove the speed was on the clean part of the run it just gets scrapped :(

Not my entry and not a Tamiya, but this guy generated an impressive 208 mph in his Hobao.  Here's a goal to shoot for:

You guys have done great keeping this going, top job all round.. you can all sue me for the catalogue of broken parts caused entering this… form an orderly queue 🥳

Great to see some old friends still here and even nicer to see newer members have got into the spirit of things too.. although the last entry was 8 months ago I might need to revive things with one of my few remaining Tamiya’s.

I might be on the hunt for a new Tamiya RC with some nostalgia so I hope to be around for the foreseeable future, my 7 year old daughter eats my time up ferrying her to umpteen dance classes but I still love my RC’s and miss my collection of 50 odd Tamiyas I had before reducing it down to about 6 now 👀

Carry on chaps and happy speeding.

Thank you for starting the original thread @Jason1145,  probably would’ve never tried speed runs with a Tamiya if you hadn’t

Can’t believe it’s been that long, time sure does fly. I’ve gotten some cars ready and been meaning to make some runs but winter/moving twice/trying to be a responsible adult seems to keep getting in the way :(. I did however find a place close to home I’ll be checking out this weekend weather permitting, so might have some updates soon :D

First time I've seen this thread so great that someone brought it back to the top of the forum, thanks @Jason1145.

Over 40mph!? good grief I had no idea that was possible with a Tamiya.

maybe your daughter could be interested in RC, sorted :) (funny how most parents these days have to go through the "taxi" stage of parenting)

@Jason1145 what set up are you using to record speed there? I plan on doing some speed runs, but I'm a bit reluctant to stuff my phone in the car to do it. Are you using some kind of sender unit in the car which talks to the tablet?

We’ll back in the day when I was doing these speed runs I was using a stand alone GPS unit for about £40 from SkyRC… it did a great job and was only the size of a matchbox so could be Velcro’s on most body parts or shell somewhere.

Exit : they’ve gone up in price !

Welcome! Beware this is as addictive as all other RC activities :D

I use the simplest and cheapest GPS I could buy. It works, really simple to get started.

It's the one you see here:

Thinking of joining this thread.. whats a good gps?

Welcome! I agree with @Tamiyastef, it certainly is addictive

I started with a cheap bicycle gps, then tried a more expensive one (think it was $20 usd), both worked well and still do. Only issue I had with using them is the gps refresh rates are slower, which meant I’d hold full throttle longer than I should to make sure it records the fastest speed and usually crash as I’d run out of road or lose sight :unsure:. Now I’m using the skyrc GNSS and have been happy with it.

I have been getting into some speed runs recently with a TT02. While I am going through the process gradually trying to settle on a brushed motor before we start working on gearing and chassis improvements I thought I would share with this forum and gather any tips from the pros!

At the moment the chassis is stock (except for some rubber sealed bearings) and I am running a Etronixs 15T brushed motor on a NIMH 7.2v pack. I am pleased with the initial result of 25mph but there is more to come.

I am sticking with NIMH and brushed for now. I am going to be gearing up with the High Speed Gear set and I have a few body and chassis hop ups to try and improve things a little. No customisation yet!

It is becoming an addiction already swapping out the motor and seeing how much faster it goes. The TT02 is a tricky chassis to keep straight and I am searching for a new running spot away where it is straight and I can keep the speed at maximum for longer.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks

Craig

Chassis: TT02 (Tamiya 4wd Class)

Gearing: 70T Spur 22T Pinion

Battery: NIMH

Motor: Etronixs 15T

Speed: 25mph (40 kph)

It has been a while since I made an attempt at a speedrun. Mostly because I have no long stretch of smooth traffic free tarmac available. I came accross this nice empty parking lot on a day out and the car I had with me was my Traxxas Stampede 4x4 VXL I own since 2017. It is still using the stock Velineon 3S VXL motor and ESC combo it came with from the factory.

The only batteries I had with me were 2 Absima 3S 5000mAh Lipo's mostly used in my crawlers. The Stampede was geared with the focus on acceleration with a 11T pinion.

End result 67 km/h (41.6 mph)

@ImALlama will you put me on the non-tamiya list please :-)

@Tamiyastef, Updating the list now to add you and @Misterp180, all I ask is if you both could please edit your posts to add the missing info, just trying to keep all the entries consistent with how its been through the past threads :)

How To Enter:

Please include the following information when you submit a speed run entry:

  1. Model of your car and which category it is going into.
  2. The top speed in mph and kph, and measurement evidence as stated in the rules.
  3. Your car's setup including:  battery, ESC, motor, gearing, and tires.

If I miss a speed run and don't update the tables, please PM me.  I'm generally on TC at least a few times per week.

Hello, I’m looking for some clarity on the TT-02 chassis. Is the gear cover part of the gearbox? if I dremel it to clear a larger pinion, does this count as a gearbox mod according to the rules?

Thanks!

If you modify a Tamiya RC with a third-party gearbox, modify the stock gearbox in any way (holes or drilling to accept different gears not intended for that chassis), or custom-build a gearbox yourself you will be entered into the "Custom Modified Tamiya RC" Category.

@Jack_O_Trades Yeah I’m afraid I’d have to count that as a gearbox mod (rule 5). If you have to modify the cover for it to fit, then that size pinion wasn’t meant for the chassis.

I think tamiya do a 'high speed gear set' for the TT-02?

They're legal -

Tamiya High Speed Gearsets are allowed and aftermarket internal gears that fit in stock Tamiya gearboxes and on stock gear shafts are also allowed.

If you're still wanting more, lower turn motors and more lipos work well! Castle motors have a 100,000rpm limit, or rather 'target' 🙄😁

Not had a chance to make a run for a while, too much work and not enough weather !!!

Been sat all 'summer' just waiting for the planets to align 😔

2023-06-30_08-06-35

Had planned on building a new DT03 with go faster goodies, to have a go a beating @stew_mac , all the parts are there, with the nib car (when they where cheap off Amazon ,over a year ago.....🙈)

Have a got a few new cars in the wings that are built , to try and beat @Jason1145 record of 17 cars on the list (if he is still top? Doesn't look to be a thing now).

I’ve been having the same problem :(. Everything’s been packed up ready to go for months, just need to charge a battery and go. Seems whenever I get a free moment the rain starts.

I think he’s still the top, Later today I’ll make it official and put a top five list or something.

Yeah the gear issue is correct as described above, any deviation is up to you guys but I think these have been abided by till now.

Ahhh 17 cars, a few good ones in there too, none blistering, think there’s a Wild Willy 2 in there crawling along somewhere 😂

Go for it pal, I’m not going for more entries so the target is fixed!
