Hi all.. I’ve been building my Tyrrell P34 Japan edition and I’m almost done… trouble is, I have assembled the chassis, set up all the electrics, painted and have almost all of the decals done. I decided to go with Patrick Depallier as the driver instead of Jody Scheckter because in the actual 1976 Grand Prix, Depallier actually finished 2nd, and Scheckter was a DNF.

I had the rear wing all painted silver and blue, but for some reason, the silver was sort of splotchy… I was going to let it go even though it looked pretty bad, but then as I continued on, I realized that Depallier’s rear wing was actually all blue and only Scheckter had the silver and blue combo. So, I decided to go ahead and strip the silver paint away. Well, I got some VP racing  fuel and some paper towels and I started away. It actually began to come off pretty easily. Then I soaked the towels in more fuel and laid them on the wing and let them soak in for about 20 mins or so… but even after doing  this a few times, there are still some areas where there are silver streaks that don’t come up. Usually, you can lightly scratch at it with your fingernail and it will start to come up, but these areas seem REALLY ingrained… even when I scratch at it lightly, I can’t feel any sort of edge where the paint and the plastic meet.

I just soaked it again for 30 minutes and absolutely NONE of those streaks came up… out of frustration, I dumped the entire bottle of fuel in a plastic cup and threw the whole **** wing in there…. I was ready to go online and try to find a rear wing, but no joy… at this point I would pay for an entire new body just to get the rear wing… I know the Argentine edition is coming out in June and i already pre-ordered it and I hoped that maybe some extra bodies might be available, but the entire body is different with that edition and the rear wings don’t match. Does anyone know where I can find another rear wing or a body that would match… or does anyone know if I soak this thing all night long and then try to rub and scrub the badword out of it tomorrow I’d these streaks will go away?

From memory this body is polycarbonate. Tamiya PS sprays are designed to be nitro fuel proof. Once it is cured it can be difficult to remove.

Tamiya polycarbonate cleaner, a soft cloth and elbow grease does work.

If the wing was hard plastic it might be possible level out the surface by sanding and respray. However this will not work on clear polycarbonate.

Yeah… it’s polycarbonate.   The fuel has taken so much off so quickly and easily and hasn’t left any of the haze that you sometimes see, but those lingering silver streaks and spots are still there. I’ll put an order in for that polycarbonate body cleaner you posted now. Fingers crossed!
