The Hotshot has oil dampers. The unique suspension relies on one shock at the front and one at the rear, but both are oil dampers.

Edit: Sorry to be redundant, @Willy iine just beat me to it.

No problem, I just wanted to show off my golden wheels. :D

Thanks. I was curious after seeing one and wondered about the monoshock setup.

I'm in build mode after my rally attempt ended up in brokenville and I was thinking about another project.

I've got the super avante I've been beating around I was thinking about something maybe more "traditional".

The Thunder Dragon also has a mono shock setup, the reason I got it over the other dragons.

Do they still sell them? I thought they were discontinued again?

Ebay has them but they are discontinued and pricy.. but so was my 2018 Super Astute I bought from a guy in Japan earlier in the week ..     what the heck, I am just too slow..

I’m just not into the new TD cars just yet..  I want cars with CF chassis.

The Novafox also has a front monoshock.

I like the td4. It drives really nice and is drama free. That's kind of what I'm missing I think. I want that not perfect balance and driving dynamic.

Admittedly, the Hotshot's mono shock configurations, while clever are the least functional of the mono shock buggies from Tamiya. At the front, Tamiya placed the shock end mounts below the shock. As, such the shock is subject to side load as well as compression load. The spring compression dynamics wind up being a bit odd. As the front suspension compresses (trying to bend the shock as well as compressing it) the suspension rate reaches an "over-center" point in the stroke and the rate falls away.

At the rear, the cantilever system works fairly well if each wheel is moved separately, but if both wheels are compressed simultaneously, the system self-defeats and travel is greatly reduced.

All the following mono shock cars rectify the front issues by properly repositioning the mounts at the outer ends of the front shock allowing consistent spring rate throughout the travel. The Boomerang, Hotshot 2, Super Sabre, Thundershot and Thunder Dragon mono shocks work well as does the Novafox. The original Fox lacked a front sway bar and its up for debate on how crucial that is.

I still love the Hotshot though ;).

So I'm pulling this back from a graveyard. It was a long spring and summer.

I'm looking for another project buggy. I'm really stuck on the hotshot. I'm not looking for a shelf piece. I've got too many of those already. Are these pretty reliable and drama free? Can I bash one around my local single track and pump tracks and various park trails without worry of it grenading parts?

Are there hop-ups that are recommended out of the gate besides bearings? I didn't really see anything out there. My plan was a torque tuned or possibly going to a 20t brushed motor, but I don't know how hot the torque tuned will make it. My td4 is running on a 3700kv right now and its stupid fast. I don't need that.

I use to drive the original HotShot daily back in the 80's.  It did fine, nothing really broke.  If the styling is what you like, definitely get the car, but I'd probably opt for the Super HotShot if getting a basher today if it must be related to the HotShot.

Otherwise, TT02B is great for around the house 4WD bashing on a budget.  GL with your choice!

Driven within its limits, the Hotshot seems pretty rugged to me. Its not any less durable than any of the other cars in that chassis series. In fact, its roll-caged based body structure is less likely to suffer damage from roll overs. The drive train, while not overly efficient, is pretty stout. Bearings and a steel pinion to start. You may like the quirky monoshock suspension for its vintage charm or you may wish to upgrade it to 4 traditional shocks like the Super Hotshot later on. Or, you could just start with the Super Hotshot as suggested by @Willy iine, which grants you bearings, 4 shocks, a GT motor, an under guard, spiked tires and some flashy gold wheels from the get-go. Being a vintage geek myself, I'm afraid I'd always recommend a Hotshot or Super Hotshot (if you have the funds) over the low riding TT02B, but that's just me.;)

Nothing wrong with that! Always good to see people's creations! I hope they were cheaper than the gold wheels I got for my stupidly expensive rebuild of my super hotshot (never go on Ebay or any auction site really:unsure: when you've had to much of the alcoholic beverages) it arrived on my doorstep and I couldn't remember what it looked like but soon to find out it was missing a lot of bits including what made it different from the original hotshot roof, wheels etc and this was at the early days of the global pandemic when prices for rc kits and parts were going stupidly expensive hence why I always call my super hotshot my stupidly expensive hotshot!

I appreciate those gold wheels.

I've got modern buggies and they are fun. I'm just looking for something to bash with that vintage feel, and honestly the hotshot is dead sexy and perfectly representative of my childhood.

I love building kits, but I don't like building shelf queens for myself. I want something that, on a whim, I can go beat the tar out of and not feel bad. The Tamiya reres seem to have better availability and parts support than kyosho or the old gold pans or goldpan rere.

They are a pretty robust buggy for their design age and very enjoyable to build! But the Achilles heel with this range of buggies (hotshot, bigwig, boomerang etc) is the chassis weren't that strong on the gearbox mounting points and the trailing arms always cracked at the mounting points again on the gearbox end I think the plastic was to rigid? But that's just my observation opinion other than that they all are brilliant buggies:D

I see you done the egress blue ball connectors absolutely superb and your tyre writing it's absolutely spot on:wub: believe it or not i was a dab hand at tyre painting then I grew old in conjunction with my eyes so patience and unable to see properly paid to the end of doing that:lol:

I really like that avante, it's just a bit spendy at the moment. I have wanted one for a while and it's what kind of inspired me to get the td4.

That's a vehicle I'd shelf queen and I know it.

Those buggies you guys have are so clean.

@moffman your cars are beautiful as always!  B)   Thanks, yep, I copied your blue rod ends on the Egress.

Yeah, I have lost quite a bit of vision myself.  I kind of kick myself for not getting back to RC sooner than 2019.. I was off and on but it's really the last 2.5 years that I really gotten back. . and looking at your cars and others really pushed me to try harder to get a cleaner finish.

What I need to really work on next is painting non-Willy driver faces..   Otherwise end up with super tinted windows..

Thanks, for me, I went through the intense driving phase earlier in the 80's and 90's so I still drive all my cars, but only mildly and sensibly without going crazy speeds these days.  I like to display my cars and admire them mostly..
