Had my first outing with the TD2 at the World Famous Hotrod Hobbies and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with the performance of the new TD2 and with some tweaking I think it will be competitive in the Sportsman class for sure. I did get 2nd place in the main and had a lot of "what is that" which is always fun! The only mods on the car right now are the slipper which for stock racing is probably not necessary as it does add some drive-train weight. I have some DF-03 aluminum shocks on order which should help a lot because the plastic shocks just don't seem up to the task for racing. I installed the new Hobbywing GR3 17.5, the XR10 Just Stock esc and a Protec full length battery, attaching the motor wires is weird on this chassis so I opted for some 3.5mm bullet connectors to make the fitment a lot easier, a low profile Protec servo with a solid servo horn is great and the car has a lot of steering! The car is a bit slow and is quite heavy so I will mess with the gearing and the esc settings to see if I can get a little more out of it. The car does need more front droop which should be able to be done by lengthening the push rod actuators, I might try some turnbuckles as replacements for those. The car was durable with no failures other then one of the front rocker arms coming loose so a little blue loctite should fix that. Overall great fun and I am looking forward to spending more time with it and racing it! I will be racing the TD4 as well which should be fun!

Interesting!

The car look a solid base for "bashing" but also for the race track 👍🏻

Wich tires are those in the pics?

Thanks

Those are Proline M3 Holeshots and the most popular tire at Hotrod Hobbies.

How did you get one in the US?

I ordered it from Discovery Japan Mall, got it pretty fast and a fair price.

I have a video but it won’t load here, it’s on the Tamiya Facebook page though

What Facebook page did you post it to?  I can't seem to find it.

As far as I know you can only put video on here if you first set them on Youtube and then paste the link here.

Oh man a real dirt track!!!! Great job I hope I do as well with a 10 year old TRF!!!

well done, although Im not sold on the body it is better than the cab forward stuff!

Does the TD4 share the same arms, hubs, etc? It’ll be nice having spares that fit both.

The TD4 and TD2 share arms, hubs, chassis, rear gearbox, driveshafts, clutch etc.

The main difference is the front plates / bulkhead as the TD2 needs more kickup as it's 2WD, and shocks are more angled as a consequence.

I'm loving this.  I will be ordering one in January. FYI I read the instruction manual and looked up the part numbers for the springs.  Turns out the kit red springs are the same red springs from the dt02 spring kit.  That kit also comes with the blue hard springs.  If you want medium springs then they will be the springs from a sand viper.  If you are getting the TT02b/DF03 aluminum dampers ( I have a set myself) don't use the included springs as they are meant for a 4wd. Also don't build them with the included instructions use the DT02-ms instructions instead.  The only real difference is that the damper instructions call for 3 oring internal spacers in the front and 4 in the rear. I did this originally and was scratching my head wondering where all my droop went.  the DT02-ms instructions call for zero internal spacers in the front and 2 in the rear and are just perfect for 2wd.  Springs?  id start with the stock red in the rear.  Why?  the medium and hard springs in my experience bottom out easy on a dt02/03 but for some reason the red doesn't. they are softer but taller.  The fronts if they are fine I would leave them but I will leave you with the following info on the springs.  The red rear springs on your buggy are identical to the dt02-ms aluminum damper springs. The front springs on that same dt02 are stock sand viper springs.  I had a phone convo with tamiya and they say they no longer make the white springs but these springs I mentioned are the same parts.

I did some experimenting with my dampers on my dt02/03 buggies.  I bought the df03 aluminum dampers and build them to dt02-ms specs.  I used the red springs from the dt02 spring kit in the rear of both buggies and kept the stock front springs. the dt03 front springs are the same as the sand viper.  amazing results.  however I did not stop there.  I rebuilt the CVA dampers with 500cst oil or 40wt associated oil.  i put 3 hole trf pistons in the front and the one hole black pistons from the kit in the rear. I removed the bottom oring on all 4 cva's and replaced them with TRF damper guides. They felt exactly the same as the aluminum dampers. the piston rods in the front aluminum dampers are longer but you can increase the length on the cvas.  the rear cva damper lower eyelets have 2 long 6mm eyelets (there are only 2 in the kit) if you order some for the fronts you can increase the length. (this may get you some more droop in the front)  I am super happy with the CVA's.  I'm saving the aluminum dampers for a future project.
