Great thread. Too late now but something to think about in the future. If you did want to do an official raffle and want it to be beyond reproach then all you need to do is have the draw officially witnessed by what I think is called a justice of the peace or a notary. I may be remembering the title incorrectly but it is basically a Lawyer, judge and I also believe a bank manager also qualifies. They are able to witness and sign a document detailing the draw, it's entrants and the prize. If anyone should want to question the outcome of the draw this witness is considered to be good enough to stand up in court if anyone wanted to take it that far.

This type of legal witness is used all the time to officially register copies of important legal documents as true and correct. A lawyer will charge you ten pounds or so to officially witness copies of original documents, so if you know someone who is a lawyer you could probably get them to witness the draw for free.

The details would be that a laywer would need to see the list of all the members eligible to enter the draw, check that with the names entered into the draw and then witness you drawing the winning name from the hat. This process must be outlined in a correctly written document and signed/dated by the witness. So depending how many members you have and who long the whole thing might take to witness correctly would effect how possible/expensive this would be. And the same goes for the competition for the perfect album if you wanted to again protect agaist claims of fraud.

Wow! If its that much trouble I just won't bother - it would just be more effort than it was worth, particularly once you start facturing in the charges Lawyers etc would charge me - it would be easily worth more than the prize being given away!

Surely I don't have to go through all that to give something away free? No one is paying for a chance to win.

What about if i phrased it as not a competition or a raffle its just me giving something away. There can't be legislation on that surely. How I choose the person I want to give the item to would be upto me just the same as any other gift i wish to give family or friends.

I have just entered my guess. I like the idea so much. Only those who are interested in getting the freebie are involved. Yet we all take part in the "game" and we all have the fun, no matter "winning" or "losing" (if any thing) in the end. What a wonderful club this is![8D]

You are totally right Chris,

You certainly don't have to go through all that especially if you are not going to charge to enter. I personally beleive that you are very highly respected and like you said even if you did just want to give it to a certain person, that is up to you. But I think we all know that is not what you want to do.

It was just for your information if you wanted to know how to proceed with a water tight legal raffel.

I welcome this sort of activity to really bring an extra element into being part of this community, keep up the great work.

Wow, I think this thread has been open for a while and a lot of tc members have stated their trust in Netsmith, I too have total trust in Netsmith and know we dont need to go thru all that, After all the prize was donated by another member that surely shows trust in his impartiality.
