Opinions on "second hand" NIB prices?

Recommended Posts

Can I ask you guys what you think is a good buying price for Tamiya RC  pre owned NIB kits?

Not talking about anything special kit wise. Kits that are in stock and available from the well known vendors.

What do you aim for, what sort of % off. see a kit advertised asking for offers, can buy this kit from well known vendor and others for £280, was going to offer £200 which I felt was fair because its second hand after all,box not sealed etc. In the end it was local so offered £240,the guy was shocked how low! to be honest I would rather pay £40 for a "brand" new kit with warrenty of sorts.

Just wonders what you guys think of pricing?

The time everyone thinks like you (and I), speculation will end...

So if you think (like me) what is your "opinion"? £200 or the £240? Is a pre owned NIB kit worth the same as a shop purchase? its second hand!

I am talking kits that's are always in stock at good prices, not out of production, rare etc.

@Gazzalene It depends on the market, but I think people would appreciate 25-30% off as motivation to buy yours over a new sealed one sold at the stores.

But if you have space to keep it, I would hold onto it for a while..  even if it appears to be some ordinary kit today, perspective can change 10+ years from now..

Willy, I am not selling,i was looking to buy. A pre owned ,run of the mill kit. every online vendor in the UK has them in stock. For less than RRP.

I was surprised the guy selling wanted the same price than a shop selling new! I realise its his choice to sell at price he thinks.

just wondered what others views are here, you guys buy loads of kits. Who in there right mind would by a pre owned kit for as much as a shop? OR is my view really way off? Again I am talking run of mill kits here.

perhaps a silly question or topic.

I personally wouldn't expect to pay equivalent to a private individual as I would to a shop. For me, it isn't about the 2nd hand aspect (if the private seller is truthful and the kit is unbuilt and as new inside I don't really give a monkeys) but more to do with the lack of  warranty/guarantee/comeback etc that you would get from Joe Bloggs but would have from a shop. In other words, my perception is that I am taking a greater risk and have less legal protection buying from some randomer than I would from a shop and would therefore expect a reduction in price. In addition, shops have overheads that individuals don't have.

As to how much less - depends what it was and how much i wanted it as to what I felt was acceptable I guess.

my view would be... assuming fresh kit complete & nothing changed from factory

any current kit I can still buy brand new in a store anytime I like... wouldn’t pay a penny over cheapest street price available & deduct the inconvenience petrol/time/etc. (Most LHS here offer free post for kits too, so I wouldn't even consider offering postage cost to reseller)

If seller don’t like it, I can buy from anywhere else - right?

There would have to be a compelling reason to buy too... eg a friend selling it & he’s located closer to me than the LHS, or it’s part of a trade etc etc

Retired discontinued kit or one that’s unavailable to easily buy right away... that’s when the $$ can go up  :)

I agree with @Silver-Can, main reason one would usually want to buy from a store is the less risk factor.

I suppose if I'm buying new, I'd just get it from a store unless there is adequate discount like 25-30%.

If the owner bought kit recently from some LHS & now changed his mind... do your LHS allow returns for refund?

I'd agree with a fair 2nd hand price being around 25% lower than the kit is currently available for at retail stores.

I keep seeing 2nd hand NIB Top Force Evo rere's pop up on the bay for around the £400 mark, when you can buy them in many UK model shops for £360 with free delivery. Some people appear to be delusional or not in tune with the market.

However, if the kit is out of print then that's a whole other story. The 2013 Egress rere is one I often see people putting up NIB for crazy prices - up to around £700-800. Again, delusional? or out of touch with the market, or perhaps just chancing it? An actual real world selling price for those I the current market is around £500, maybe £600, as in that what's they're actually selling for. I picked one up for £467 delivered recently which I was pretty happy with and I know I could sell it on and not suffer financially.

And what about the insano prices the Japanese eBay sellers put their stuff up for, it's just nuts!

What kit are you after then @Gazzalene?

In the Ops scenario, I would have to get at least 20% off what I could buy it for elsewhere, and no postage involved.

For me it depends how much the thing costs. If it's just a couple of hundred dollars I would want at least 20% or so discount for buying privately. If the seller is really local and means less hassle than waiting a couple of days for online delivery then I think like you I would offer $240. Anything more and I would just buy from the store and wait a few days.

Honestly, even for something that's OOP I wouldn't pay more than it originally sold for. If you're trying to sell it for more, it means you aren't interested in the kit as part of the hobby - you're a speculator, and I've read all about the tulip craze. No thanks. I'll wait; Tamiya will bring out a "Purple Edition" of it next year amyway.

There is another scenario as to why you would onsell NIB kits. Your wife finds that you have 4 around the house and you have no choice but to move them on!

Anyway, I agree with most here, I would expect about 20% off what I could get it for in the shop

Kit was only Volvo FH12 globetrotter. Advertised locally for sale and offers. Looked at my go to vendor ModelSport. free shipping £289,loads of stock everywhere. Don't buy "used/pre-owned/second hand" But it was NIB and local so could look before I bought. Like others said ,would of thought it would be less than shop price. So I really thought £200 was a good offer, but decided on £240. Guy was like "its 289 in shops". I replied yes but that's new, etc. I would rather pay the extra for a shop bought. Like I said,i then thought, do others feel the same. looks like you do for most part

A 1:1 car lose 20% (at least) of it value the moment it leaves the dealer (at least before this covid induced shortage of everything). I apply the same % to scale cars.

However, these days, it is reported that used cars cost more than new, so I guess scale car sellers are trying to apply the same logic?

Is this a current production Kit?  If so, buy from someone else.

If not, the price mark up is because they kept it to sell at a later date.  (Larger mark up the longer it has been out of production.)

If it is current production, but not in stock anywhere else: supply low, demand high, higher price.

I have a "loyalty card" at my LHS wich gives me 10% of my total amount spend on my last 10 purchases as credit to spend in the shop. Also when something is missing from the kit (never happened to me but I've heard others have had kits with some piece(s) missing, even Tamiya kits) I'm confident my LHS will sort it out. Not so with a local guy selling second hand...  For me, in this case £ 220 would be my limit. If he wants more he has to look for another buyer.

Same as others: the time you buy a second hand kit, how do you ensure it is complete? And if sealed and something is missing (sometimes happens), how much can you be confident that someone will get help you out?

For those reasons : I don't buy nib kits available at my lhs on second hand unless there is a price cut (20 to 25%), as there is no warranty... For unavailable kits as out of print, it's another story, but as I do not want to fuel speculation, I simply avoid those.

I’ve paid over the odds for 2nd hand nib kits & then a day later the rerererelease was announced 🤣 sometimes my desire to buy stuff overrides my sense of outrage at overpriced things!
