Madcap basement “barn” find

Recommended Posts

Hi,

On summer vacation seeing family for first time in 4 years.  I was planning to look for my boomerang which should e in storage for last 25 years.   So far no luck.  But my brother gave me his old Madcap. Here are some photos before I start dissecting and refurbishing her.B12E67FD-F811-4B4A-A6DB-ABE7AB471F6D.jpeg.0eed5a3428be2403cc53d1d92ae15c45.jpeg

anyone know if these controllers have any value on the second hand market?

Airtronics XL2P is the same as the original Sanwa Machine A. If in good condition and complete with the battery holder there is a market but condition is everything.

Thanks.  Looks to be all there including the unique battery holder!

Restarting this project.  Basement find Madcap from my Brothers home. Wheels cleaned and Aerospace 303 added. Decals, bearings, servo, RSC and paint ready.

This will not be box art

Interesting to see old style of hex hub.

Hi mate, yeah I've only seen that larger bearing used either side of the Madcap/Astute/King Cab diffs, as you have found. Easy enough to get hold of, I bought 4 rubber shielded ones from this eBay seller and they are decent -

Just let me know if you have any trouble sourcing some on your side of the world. From memory, the gearbox also needs two 1150s and two 850s mate.

Thanks mate, will take a look.  Local hobby store did not have any but will check again.   Luckily I can just drop the diff later once the bearings arrive and finish reassembling the car now. The other bearing sizes are easy to get, 1680 is a new one for me

@Kol__ looked up the alternative bearing size 8x16x5 and found the bearings locally. Traxxas uses this size as well. 1680 is a Tamiya code.

I see options for metal shielded and rubber shielded ball bearings?  What is better?

Yeah the Tamiya bearing codes denote the external and internal diameters, so 1680 is 16mm outer diameter and an 8mm inner hole. Not sure about the width, so maybe best to check the width of the brass ones you took out to make sure they're 5mm wide?

I usually go for rubber shielded mate, as they're supposed to be better at keeping the moisture out. Particularly useful for say wheel bearings, but not really necessary in a closed environment like the gearbox. That said though, the vintage Tamiya Super Bearings have a dark blue rubber shield. I took some out of an original Astute gearbox recently (same gearbox as Madcap) and all 3 sizes of bearings in there where of that rubber shielded type, and also as far a bearings go they are pretty sexy, lol🤔😂. They just look so cool with the text embossed on the rubber shield.😳, see...

Thanks.  I will double check width when I get home.  Blue looks nice and rubber shielded is pricier.   10 qty non-shielded is cheaper than 2 qty rubber sealed 🤷‍♂️

Would the rubber ever disintegrate and end up being a problem long long term?

Nah mate, seems to be more of a plastic type material than a rubber tbh, it's a fairly stiff disc that seals each side of the bearing. Can't see it breaking down. I think I paid a little under £4 for 4x 1680 bearings including delivery from that eBay seller btw👍

I looked at the EBay seller you sent, unfortunately shipping to HK will kill me.   Need to find something more local.  Thanks for sending info. Much appreciated

Cleaned up the Madcap chassis.  Unfinished items includes new 1680 ball bearings, new CVA dampers to replace the stock friction dampers, install ESC, receiver, paint and decals.  Will also be looking for an Avante cockpit and new front tires.

Ordered 1680 ball bearings and an Avante cockpi 🤗

I can't wait to see. My window decals are peeling, so a driver and maybe smoke might be a nice touch.

Cleaned the body. Makes a big difference.

I can't bring myself to clean the body on my Super Madtute. That and the lower suspension arms are about the only original bits left

Maybe I'll do a clear coat to lock the patina in.

Check out the Avante cockpit I did for the Manta Ray.

I could not attach photos as I have exceeded my limit.  See build thread above

Swapped 4 qty rear yellow dampers from TT-02B with my DT-03 Nissan Titan Redbull truck. Yellow goes well with the Redbull livery. The DT-03 black dampers will replace friction shocks on the Madcap.  Interesting the damper lengths for both vehicles are different (front and back).
