Madcap basement “barn” find

Recommended Posts

Disappointed not to see @Kol__'s in the collection of internet's favourite Madcaps (but my Google image search agrees with you). Mine isn't such the inspirational looker. Maybe I'll crack on and make a showroom.

My build thread is here

How about a pic I don't think I've shared yet? Yum, patina.

And a hint about the ridiculousness I've sunk into it (long front shocks since then):

It's definitely a Super Madtute

Ahh I remember seeing this car in TC.  Other than the body it is more Astute 🤗.   I love what you did with the battery and covering up the hole / opening 🤗

At the moment the only mods will be bearings, CVA and a metal mounting plate I purchased from @Kol__.  Minor changes includes new electronics / servo, swapping plastic nuts to metal and replacing worn front tires.   I do not have original decals and ordered new ones from MCI Racing but altered the colors, 🤞hope it works

Your Madatute looks great mate.

Definitely. It was a Madcap, but I agree that it's less so now. I think mostly the chassis has to stay to be a Madcap (sorry @Kol__).

It is all good.  What ever works for you own personal car.  Madcap does not get the same love as the Astute.

Actually I like the Madcap body design better, the cockpit area with the rollover bar and rear glass reminds me of the first gen NSX 🤔

Sounds great mate, I'm intrigued to see what you come up with. Looks like the body shell has come up pretty well, so should be a good candidate for a revamp.

Lol, totally agree mate. The Super Astute, which is what mine really has become now, is such a good performer so the changes are for the better imo. I just love the Madcap's bug like shell and the wing is way nicer that than the Astute/Super Astute/Egress one too!😎

I agree about the Madcap body over the Astute. The Astute body has more shape than I ever thought it did back in the day, but I didn't mind cutting up a repro to allow me to use for my sidepods :-)

Older style wheels use smaller diameter tires.  Will need to stick to existing unless I want to upgrade to newer wheels517F48D4-190F-4BB6-B3AD-2F86A211E56A.jpeg.d99bf215c366f50e727e115d7c1cdb3a.jpeg

Washed the body again with body cleaner and another round with dish soap.   Letting body dry before painting

Installed bearings and drive shaft.

Reused black dampers from DT-02 Nissan Titan.  They are too long but work.  Wheels installed and have black wheel nuts added.  Installed ESC and cockpit.

The battery pack is too tight and cannot fit into slot.  Are new generation of batteries that much bigger?

Painted.

I still need to clean up some overspray.  Lots of masking as original body did not have paint spray protection film.  PS-22 with black backing.  Painted cockpit with PS-22 but will fill in these of area with acrylic flat black   Just wanted the driver body to be matching green.

Looks great “as is” but I have decals on standby to be installed  A8CA41F4-5B3A-4986-8F9A-E7F1A2EED6A0.jpeg.706ce08290a109f83df09c46978d9368.jpegCFE8ED05-4BB6-41AE-9061-0FEA19B86055.jpeg.5cec08ac96f29c5336d7c419481ab22e.jpegE7F3F6CD-C212-406B-B405-008515E43005.jpeg.8f78fe248879a74d448e2ef643640ff3.jpegE7B525CA-DE9D-42DB-B9E5-0A359A84841A.jpeg.54ae0354723ebb1816c6511b46e9c418.jpeg

Decal time

Car was missing decals and I had to order new Decals from MCI.  Decided to change the colors around to suit the proposed pallet.
Changed yellow to sunflower yellow, white to grey, red to darker Ruby red.

All the older Tamiya’s had the “UV Protected”.  This was back in the day when the ozone was going to be depleted and we are all going to fry under the sun ☀️

Completed car with driver.  Small electronics need to be cleaned up but 95% completed.  The stock yellow and green wires works with the design for once 🤗

Thanks to all the people who helped.   I will try to take better photos next weekend.

@Frankster that Avante driver fits great!  Does the mounting screw even happen to match up with something on the regular chassis? I'm not normally a fan of a clear window on the back of a Madcap, but seeing the ESC there is neat.

Thanks @naturbo2000 !

I like the older cars with proper drivers.  I did the same with my Manta Ray.  To make the screw work I cut some alum flat bar.  Alum is very soft, rigid and light.  Almost like drilling and cutting into wood.  I used existing holes in the chassis to hold the flat bar down.  All mechanical screw and nut fasteners to survive any vibrations off roading.  Same here on the back window but the Hobbywing ESC heat sink happened to be in red.  I wanted to showcase this like a flux capacitor 😂

The driver cockpit is still lopsided.  Still need to mount the ESC properly

Nice work @Frankster, it's come together nicely bud👍🏻😎

Thanks for all your help @Kol__   Build felt good and now too good to drive 😅. Interesting to see the Madcap 25+ years old plastics and design vs the DT-02 which is 10+ years old.  Looking forward to tying something more modern in the near future
