RC Bumper cars :( (What car would be best to do this?)

Recommended Posts

I got my son and myself Plasma Edge IIs (TT-02B) and we built them together.

Well, he seems more interested in crashing the cars into each other.  (I want to put faster motors in, but that won't help this problem.)

If I wanted to play "RC Bumper" cars with him demolish derby style, what cars would you suggest for this?  (Doesn't have to be tamiya I guess, but I need to be able to get spare parts.)

I'm tied of my kid putting black tire marks on my car's body/stickers!

Both still have stock motors and don't go that fast, so no parts have been broken, yet.  But I actively tried to avoid him when racing around the driveway.

Maybe best for you to get him a cheap Amazon RTR until he is ready for real RC.

My daughter is the same although when we do that, my Thunder Dragon drives straight over her SU-01 Aero Avante.

I bought used Tamiyas for this purpose (Dual Hunters) - on the basis that I could get parts to repair them and now my son is old enough (now 8), he can do the fixing.

Less tears (his, not mine), because broken doesn't mean it goes in the bin and he as knows how much work goes into fixing it - because he has to to do it - he is getting more careful with it.

I say stick with the TT-02Bs, maybe put a slower motor in his / dial down the throttle / foam behind the trigger until his responses get sharper

And get a 'shelfer' shell for yours, have sacrificial runner shell.

For proper bumper cars, can you take the shells off and fabricate some kind of ring covered in foam / rubber? Body posts might not long if you use them as attachment points though.

Kamtec does a series of cars and events based around them, "Bangers". They race in ovals and its pretty much destruction derbys.

They sell quite heavy duty 2mm abs shells for the purpose, the cars run mechanical speed controllers, no diffs or suspension, metal chassis to which everything is bolted. simple and they look quite robust as crashing is kind of their intended purpose.

You beat me to it. Fine choice. You can do Caravan demolition and three wheelers as well. Tough as old boots. Most now actually have m troniks style ESC whichever are very hardy. Parts are cheap and there are quite a few clubs if you get hooked!!!

The TT02B is a pretty good choice for this as they're pretty much made of rubber so they shouldn't break (much).

Are RC stockcars a thing anywhere else? There are a few clubs here that run them, basically a metal chassis and body thar are designed to crash into each other

There will be a niche corner of the internet somewhere that specialises in pics like that

Suggestion:   Two  Lunchbox's

Get in an enclosed area (fenced-in garden, vacant ball court etc), start(and reset) front bumper-to-front bumper like a Rugby scrum and give a 3-2-1 count to start things off.

The front bumper is very flexible so if both participants went full bore right away, there's bound to be one Lunchbox or another sliding off to the side.  Goal should be who can flip the other on their side first and score a point.  Point scored, reset and have at it again.  I think the stock Lunchbox is sturdy enough (when pitted against another) to sustain this kind of activity.  As your skill level (read: thirst for carnage and destruction) increases, hits will be harder, perhaps some plastic body trimmings will be shed.  That's all part of the fun and would make for nice memoirs to show the rest of the family at the dinner table when rehashing the days events.

It's funny.. I can relate to some degree with the OP's experience, however it was my dear father who would turn in to the basher of us two.  We would make a race course with paper cups in a parking lot and when my father inevitably lagged behind or missed the course, he would give up racing altogether and wait for me to come back around in attempts to take me out.  Still gives me the chuckles thinking about it, and another reason I love the guy so much...

You need to experience some Lunchboxes, hands down the most fun (and trouble free) R/C vehicle ever made!

Just a thought, how about 2 Lunchboxes 2 Goal posts and a big  ball instead? RC Football.

Then there would be a bit of crashing involved satisfying the young fella and at least the ‘target’ wouldn’t always be the other car.

Haha, we've done exactly that but with a Lunchbox and Monster Beetle. You heed the whole back fence as the goal, its much harder than it looks, especially when my son insists on using the Monster Beetle.

Ideally both cars would be the same, but the LB is such a big handicap that it evened things out for us. I consistently beat my son on the track (hes 9 and getting better all the time it won't be for much longer!) but the Lunchbox is the great leveller, it is the only time he will beat me.

I really like the idea.

What about a Midnight Pumpkin?  They sort of look like the same car less the body?  (Never was a fan of the yellow lunch box.)

The black lunch boxes seem to be out of stock without going to Asia.

Otherwise, I think I'm ordering a yellow/black lunchbox from tower.  (4x tamiya points for the next couple of days and less 20% from coupon make them each just north of $100)

I don't really have much to add to this, but looks like a crazy amount of fun!

What I do have, is an idea, with a quick backstory.

Back in February at USTE 2022 (Ultimate Scale Truck Expo) here in Florida, There was a guy with a metalwork stand. I don't quite remember the name, But this guy and his Dad actually make metal bodies that dent and ding. They had a super cool idea behind it. They do molds of the scale truck body you have, then actually make a full metal body from it. Because when you're out crawling with a hard body, sure you can get scratches and roll, But what about dents and dings that tell the story like a real truck?

I think it would be crazy cool to run an RC Demo Derby with metal bodies that can actually get damaged during the derby. That way you can actually get to a point where it's undrivable and you're out, leaving room for a real Demo Derby type podium finish.

Now this looks like serious fun! The trick seems to be too snake in between other cars 🙂 I love it.

Kamtecs would be great for this, or two lunch boxes or pumpkins.

Two Heavy Dumps might also be good too. Very sturdy bodies and giant sprung bumpers. They can take a kicking too.

RC sumo could be good too.

Yes I wanna do this! (and maybe other kinds of racing too)

I hear there’s an Egress Black Special in the works, that should be pretty spectacular for this purpose.

Yes, full-on RC demolition derby cars are a thing. But it's cool once, and then you have a broken car...

Another idea I've seen people do is balloons. Tie a balloon to the back of each car. Whoever pops the other person's balloon first wins. That way, there is some actual chase/race action involved, but with some (hopefully) non-damaging contact.
