I am new to the hobby and building my first Tamiya kit, a Super Avante. I bought a Hobbywing Xerun brushless combo at the advice of my local hobby store only to find out that the motor won’t fit. The connection tabs won’t fit under the motor cover. The combo came with the hobbywing XR10 Justock G3 esc. Can I use this esc with a Tamiya TBLM 02 17.5t brushless motor? It has the connections on the back and will fit fine.

Yeah motors are agnostic to ESCs, they don’t really care what’s powering them

Just watch out for exceeding max current ratings & a sensored-only ESC won’t drive an unsensored-only motor.

I wouldn’t lose sleep over it, 17.5 is pretty stock - should be safe to try & see.

I have earlier XERUNs and run anything from 13.5 to 7.5 on them - they’ve never complained... drift cars though, so maybe lighter load than buggy.

Gear it conservatively & check temps aren’t too high.

I noticed you are new to this. Just sharing my experiences.

When I first dipped my toes into this brushless game, my friend advice me to get "sets", where the ESC is matched to the motor and they will definitely work together.

I ended up getting a set where the ESC has no reverse.

This was last year. Now I am pairing 4.5T BL and ESC separately. It took a lot of research online to understand what all the numbers and types means. As WillyChang said gear conservatively, do you understand gearing? If not, read up on it. Understand it. Brushless motors are not cheap and smoking one hurts your wallet. While I deliberately smoke silver cans with 2.4 FDR while I carefully gear my brushless. I have a "recommended" gearing chart for brushless that I work with and a heap of pinion and spur gears to adjust the gearing to the best possible, although this is for a non Tamiya where gearing is very freely adjustable.

I ended up owning a Novak club spec blinky ESC that also has no reverse. But luckily it was cheap enough... pretty much a combo for price of a motor.

Same here, got a Speed Passion 17.5T with ESC on clearance from 3Racing. Didn't know at that time SP is out of business, had been out of business for nearly a decade, that's why it was on clearance in the first place! Took me a long time to find a program card, from half way around the world. Ended up using it with a TBLE (not ideal).

Well, that was my first dip into brushless not knowing what I was doing, did a lot more research and reading up since then.

Turns out the xerun esc will work fine with the Tamiya motor I just bought and I’ll have the xerun motor for another kit down the road where space is less limited.

at one point back then TC folks were buying SP combos for like $50

motor is sensorless 3300ish and pretty coggy... but in closer look the SP ESC is sensor capable

had program gizmo too

haven’t yet gotten around to trying to graft on a sensored motor to try. Can’t find my sensor leads

That's about what I paid for my 17.5T, £30odd.

It is sensored though. The ESC is sensored capable but not reverse capable.

The program gizmo is very hard to find now, I managed to locate one half way across the world, in Borneo! Luckily, my in law's are only 1 hour away and cleared out the shop for me. I only asked for 1, they bought all "just in case". 🤣

You can still get the 4.5t and 5.5t motors, Schumacher still has them in stock (Modelsport is cheaper on the 5.5t), at under £25 they're still not a bad buy (although, a couple of winds slower than the premium winds, the 5.5t similar to say a Reedy 7.5t).

I'm running the 5.5t with a 10bl120 in a Mid Custom, and it goes well for £65 worth.

Got a 4.5T from Modelsport for £19.99 (IIRC), paired it with a X-car 120A (re-badged Hobbywing something?). Dare not install it in anything yet as I do not want to be sweeping up pieces of my car.

@alvinlwh  You're so lucky you managed to find one.

MIBI still have it although is the R version which is the +11 min timing.

TBH, I dare not put mine into anything yet.

I was tempted, but flipped flopped too long, and missed it (although, I've still got a 4.5t and a couple of 6.5t in the spares draw ,so don't actually need one, but....)

Hobbyking special?

Sure there's a guy that ran the Scottish championship running one of those, flashed with the hobbywing software , amd did really well . (he runs the Carlise club, so @Mad Ax may know? )

You'll be fine, you tend to find it'll spin up the tyres before damaging anything, and you can always just turn the end point down, to a power level you're happy with, and up it as you get more confident/ set the car up better.

** the only issue I've had, running a 4.5t, was I melted the 4mm plugs on the saddle lipo pack!
