Flare65 92 Posted July 24, 2022 The local track had a vintage race day. Thought I would share some pics from the event with you all since everyone here has an appreciation of older RC cars. I dusted off the old Lunchbox (Box art yellow in the pics below) for the event. Was planing on running it as-is, but with an old 2 channel Magnum Jr AM radio, there was 3rd channel for the transponder so I ended up putting modern electronics in it sans LiPo batterys - Still running NiHMS. Only mods are bearings and a Sport tuned motor. Traction rolling in the corners. This was my quick camber adjustment. Zip tie on the shock shaft! Ended up breaking the lower shock mount. Quick fix with a dremel and I think an Team Associated linkage. Special thanks to Shawn, the track announcer helping me out! The orange/white Avanti is his ride. Good as new! We ran multiple classes. Two heats of 2WD buggies. The 'Wheelie" class where you had to do a wheelie across the two white tape stripes on the track on every lap. Mod 4WD with the lone Tamiya Avanti up against two Optima Mids. Monster Truck class with a mishmash of everything including Clod busters. They also ran mod Losi Mini-B which are the small buggies in the photos. I ended up getting 2nd place in the Monster truck main. The silver Monster Beetle handled so much better than my truck. I kept pace with the MB but passing some of the slower Clodbusters was a pain given how much space they take up on the track. I was out in front in first place on the last lap with the MB behind me but he caught me at the last turn before the end of the track. Had a lot of fun. They want to make this a regular race for the fall season. I'm thinking about building another vintage Tamiya to compete with. Something that handles a bit better than a Lunchbox. Any suggestions? Was thinking a Blackfoot...
Kol__ 3377 Posted July 24, 2022 Looks like such a fun day out mate, and congrats on the 2nd place, sounds like a dramatic finish to that one! 4 hours ago, Flare65 said: That's an amazing pic of the line up!😍 4 hours ago, Flare65 said: I'm guessing the above shot is not of the wheelie class then?😂
Flare65 92 Posted July 25, 2022 No, I didn't take any photos of that class while I was running. The two Comical cars, the green/white Lunchbox and another car running the Wild Willy 2 chassy were in it. The while stripes you see on the track is the section that they had to wheelie across. I could have ran my luncbox in it, but just felt like doing the monster truck class. I'd be up for running this again, but I think I need a better monster truck. One with oil shocks. At the time, I lived in St. Peters, I raced an MRP-10 against, Frogs, RC-10 Frankensteins, etc. Some of the best times I had as a 13 year old kid. I then moved to Bolink Eliminator 10's and raced out in Cahokia when Ace Anglum was running the show out there at the outdoor track and indoor track across the street. Very fun stuff. I stopped racing competitively around 1989 when I moved to Atlanta. Funny I was talking to my kids the other day about A-hobby, Mark Twain Hobby, and the old D&D shop in old town St. Charles right there along the river.

ADRay1000 235 Posted July 27, 2022 as a former original Lunchbox owner, and now the owner of a re Monster Beetle and re Frog, the ORV chassis is going to outperform the LB all day.
87lc2 2666 Posted July 28, 2022 Whoa, a race from the future (thread title is 2023) Very cool, thanks for sharing. I agree with previous posters, the Blackfoot would be a good truck for this type of race. I love my stock Blackfoot.

I grew up in the Aurora/Montgomery/Oswego area, and mostly hung out at Whitt's Hobby in North Aurora, but made it up to A-Hobby once in a while. Never raced there, though, I didn't start racing until 1992 up in Duluth, MN, and that was strictly indoor carpet oval. (Can't for the life of me remember the name of that place.)

It's where I started out racing before moving to the bigger stuff out in Cahokia. The shop is long gone, and so are the owners, Clyde and Debbie. That area has gentrified a lot from what I can see on Google maps.

Pablo68 1049 Posted August 15, 2022 Racing.........from the FUTURE!!!!!!! Looks like you had s good time. Umm, yeah I've never owned or run a Lunchbox, but it seems to me to be a Hornet on stilts, it will be fun, but will never handle well. A stock MB will handle much better, not great though. My fairly modded MB handles quite well.
3speeder 54 Posted August 16, 2022 Sorry I missed this! I live about 25 minutes away and would have brought something to race. Any plans to do this again sometime?
