Silver can budget rally build off

Learned that in japan, they are selling bolt on long damper spec shock tower for tt-02… https://shop.pbrw.net/items/52807322

and i ended up ordering those…

Not bad, even on-road carbon shock towers are good to have. That should make for a fun runner if you can get some body roll in!

My TA-02(Ra) is not longer budget. After enjoying it best in my collection for over a year, I decided to treat it. First I bought the JAZRider carbon upgrade kit thinking it is cheap. However, it came with nothing, no instructions, no screws, absolutely nothing for fitting it.

Then I found the instructions for #53166 right here on TC and worked my way from there.

I had to order #0115117 and #9804959 from Ebay, other spacers, etc from Aliexpress and screws from my spares to complete it.

Also from JAZRider, I replaced the rear gear box cover...

So now it no longer complies with the budget limit but it still has the original silver can! It is actually so enjoyable on that I do not feel the need to replace it.

Hopefully, in a few months' time, I will be entering a new entry to the budget challenge. 😉

Will entering this be considered cheating?

"5. Brand new build or second hand bargain, whatever works"

Technically thats a "brand new bargain", but I'm curious to see how an FF-03 rally build would go. You get bearings and useful shocks from the start, but you may need to adjust the ride height and replace the kit springs with something softer.

I think an XV-01 without the belt and rear diff would make a more suitable project if attempting a FWD off-road car.

It is likely I will need go for longer shocks with my usual go-to for 50-55mm, the Team Raffee aluminium set.

However, I am not sure how long they need to be eventually so, as I said in the build thread, this will be a slow build, order, wait, repeat process.

Alvin, the way I choose my shock length for my rally car (and others too) is as follows.

1- build the chassis and install the wheels and tires but do not install any shocks

2- put it on droop blocks - straight clean pieces of wood work great. I choose 19mm blocks for my rally car.

3- measure the eye-to-eye needed; be careful with shock towers that have multiple options as they always yield slightly different eye-to-eye values

Hope this helps.

Yeah, that is how I am planning to go. Someone who had made their FF-03 mentioned 55mm shocks, but I will know for sure when I measure mine.

It would, but finding one that's within budget can be difficult.

I don't think the budget permits much of a practical rally car, if you ask me! Barring second hand slightly used but all sorted out lucky finds of course.

I onde missed out on a XV-01 that was listed at £189. Turns out that the shop listed something they don't actually have in stock. I ordered and waited for a month of nothing turning up. It was the Subaru one, not the Lancia one. Now it is going for £239, which can be within the budget if we agree with £250 as a result of inflation.

Then the XV-02 could enter, it was 275$ on plain old Amazon.com, that's a little over 210 in Scottish currency. That's only the chassis and wheels and tires, but there's still budget for a body and basic electronics if we invoke the right to tap into the spare box.

Lucky you! In Scotland (or this side of the pond) they are IRO£300+.

Regarding spares, there is no real hard and fast rule, you are mostly answerable to yourself I guess. For me, when this build off started, it became a challenge, to myself, to build a car below £200 (call it £250 now). Things like the odd screws or turnbuckle, I will not cost it. But things like motor, ESC, servo and RX, I will. The way I see it is they are installed in the car, and set up for the car, not easily taken out and used somewhere else without a. Needing to set up again and b. Resulting in this car not able to run. Also I do not have a huge spares box to dive into at that time! 😁

End of the day, there is no hard and fast rules. Barnie is not coming after you.

Here there is no way that an XV-01 or XV-02 could participate as a newbuild. The obvious choice is some TT and hold it regarding hopups. Then you have something that is as a lower Thunder Dragon, looking at it with a tiny bit of homour^_^.

My XV-01 was within the budget when I got it and only mounted a 1060 ESC, an RX and for the looks new rims for the old tyres. I did not enter,  since it was built (and no need to do it again) and I only completed it.

Now it is rebuilt,  better than ever (in my ownership at least) and outside of the budget:).

We are lucky to have Amazon, yes. They play yo-yo with the prices, sometimes during the same day. The XV-02 was 365$ (our normal retail) then 275$ (when I pulled the trigger) then 265$ (grrr) then back to normal retail. Tamiya hop-ups also go half price regularly but only for a day or so. It's the new PJ here but you have to monitor and be very patient.

It is a challenge, a challenge that I hope to take on but I also have a long list of other rally cars (other brands) that I also want to build.
