wtcc5's TB-02

Recommended Posts

I have told myself to buy less chassis in the last weeks, but the hobby is so much fun and there are so many chassis to discover...

This time it is a TB-02. I found it on Ebay after Michael Koos gave me a hint. I watched it and it found not much attention, so I got it for a nice price:

It is generously Hop-Upped with Tamiya and Yeah Racing parts. Highlight's are the aluminium hubs and steering, as well as the aluminium center spine. It also got carbon damper stays and front chassis stiffener, Tamiyas aluminium camber link mount and motor mount.

The whole car is a shelf queen. No dirt and no scratches. I am very happy that it found its way to my place. I ordered more Hop-Ups already :D

I started to disassemble the chassis, mostly to check the condition and to remove parts and screws, that don't belong there. For example a variety of Torx- & Slotted-head-screws and wrong shims. Two of the Torx-screws were badly stripped and couldn't be removed.

I worked the heads with a Dremel and then could remove them after a lot effort.

I also removed the Yeah Racing parts. These are cool and hard to get, but I am not a fan of aluminium arms and body posts. Aim is to make it a Tamiya Hop-Up chassis, so these left the car:

The TB02 is a smart chassis, sure @TwistedxSlayer would agree.

I notice the centre chassis brace is aluminium!?

are you keeping that?

I see that your not bothering with center aluminium spine! Didn't read very well 😳

Nice!

I’m also a fan of the 02/02R/Evo3 family…I have a job lot of new parts on their way from Japan in the next week or so that I need to decide what to do with, will be following your build 😀

I tried the same thing for so many times, but get always a relapse (especially in the last week/month).

And also because of you ;)
I‘m looking forward to build the TB Evo 5…my first TB chassis.

@svenb: Maybe a misunderstanding. I wrote, that I don't like aluminum arms and body posts. These will leave the car, because they make the impression, that this is a blingbling drift tuning car. And I want to be closer to a TB-02R race chassis. The spine will stay, as well as the steering. I wanted to remove the spine to get rid of the stripped screws.

I disassembled the chassis further, removing everything, but the steering posts and inner suspension mounts.

For the first step, the suspension conversion, this was necessary:

It starts with the front:

Really cool are these pins. I somehow have never seen these before:

This hub generation is completely new for me. I know the arms for many years, but these hubs with these little bearings never met my eye...

So, can we expect a TB01 next time? 😁 Very nice piece of chassis :)

TB02 was quite popular for rally racing around here. After bombproof tank the TB01 was, people probably though that TB02 will be as good. Hovewer, it's weaknesses shown up. Stock ball diffs were very poorly designed and unreliable, while one piece shaft didn't cope well with the flexible plastic chassis. I've even seen DIY 3-piece driveshaft conversion to improve reliability of the drivetrain.

It's quite unfortunate, that TB03, which fixed TB02's issues, never got as popular (obviously, I'm fan of TB03/TB-Evo5 generation 😁but generations before had its charm, too)

It was also used on TA05IFS, later variants of TRF415 and TB-Evo 4/5. They switched to Short reversible suspension with 10mm OD bearings after quite short time - probably because those little bearings were quite delicate.

@Honza: Thanks for the info. Yeah, these bearings look so vulnerable. I cannot imagine these surviving one hit on the board.

I will not comment on the TB-01...everything is possible :D

Lets continue with the rear:

Very similar to the front...

With the suspension arms attached, I could reinstall the gear boxes:

The front already came with the aluminum upper arm mount. The rear not. Of course, I had to do something against this imbalance:

Next on is the steering. I kept the Yeah Racing parts. These are a bit pale:

Then it was time for the rear gear box install:

Looking good so far:

Now it is time to come to all the tasteful parts of this chassis. What really keeps me into Tamiya, is the way to incorporate all the delicious aluminium and carbon parts to plastic tub chassis. And the TB-02 is one of these outstanding examples.

Motor and heat sink installation:

I am back from the Bilsterberg and Nuerburgring racetracks, where I spend time racing my small hatchback in the rain and watching the 12 hours race. It was a great end to my holidays. At home again now, it is time to continue with this build.

The anti-roll-bars come next:

Just in time before the shocks would block the space:

The real TB-02R had TRF415MS damper housings, so I had to get these:

I really dig this look:

Those damper cylinders are an excellent find, they look great :)

I really wanted some for my Evo III but couldn't find them anywhere :(. I've had to settle for the 49293 Damper Set which have the same smooth caps but are a slightly different shade of blue

@Juhunio: I found them in a german shop that doesn't ship outside Germany. It seems these were also his last, as these are out of stock right now. Your 49293 look very good.

Nearing the end of this build ^_^ The car becomes more beautiful. Now it is about hexes and tires:

2f203683-6ebe-48a9-9zddng.jpeg

Similar to the TBevoIII, I will use Sorex racetires for the 24mm rims, but hexes first:

Shiny:

The bumper is next:

Then more carbon and blue aluminum ^_^

I really like the aluminum insert. I had never seen that before. Thinking of routing a channel through the plastic of a TT-02 lower deck with a palm router and making an insert with 2mm aluminum. But I had promised myself the TT was now stable and time and money expenditures were a thing of the past 😐
