Tamiya 1/10 Plasma edge II RC KITSET

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I am a newbie to rc kit sets I was wondering if I could use a Tamiya 1/10 Plasma edge II with the following:

SAVOX SC-0254MG STANDARD DIGITAL SERVO, MAVERICK MTX-244 3CH WHEEL RADIO with MRX-244 receiver, Ultra Power UP4AC Plus Balance Charger + Enrich Power 5000mAh 7.4V Lipo. I am on a budget and the website is not clear on if it comes with the ESC or not (https://franktonmodels.co.nz/products/tamiya-1-10-plasma-edge-ii-rc-kitset?_pos=31&_sid=f5870f6a6&_ss=r)

Currently all of the above mentioned parts is a cost of $480 and 7 cents nzd and I was wondering if it’s worth an upgraded battery.

My nearest hobby shop is Frankston model shop NZ.

All the links: (https://franktonmodels.co.nz/products/tamiya-1-10-plasma-edge-ii-rc-kitset?_pos=31&_sid=f5870f6a6&_ss=r),   (https://franktonmodels.co.nz/products/savox-sc-0254mg-standard-digital-servo?_pos=10&_sid=0e4ac1546&_ss=r),

https://franktonmodels.co.nz/products/lipo-2s-combo-with-charger?_pos=1&_sid=17a63f662&_ss=r

Help and advice is appreciated thanks for Your time.

The link you've posted is self-contradictory about the ESC. It says under specifications "ESC modelTBLE-02S" (which is Tamiya's standard ESC,) and it also says "requires Electronic Speed Control (ESC) We recomend Hobbywing HW1060" (which is decent cheap ESC). I think you'd need to send them a message to ask about that.

If you're using a Lipo battery (rather than Nimh) then you really want an ESC which supports that and knows to cut off before the voltage drops to a level that would damage the Lipo battery. I've got a feeling that the TBLE-02S might not support Lipo cutoff voltages. I'm not sure about the HW1060.

Either way, on a budget I personally would just go Nimh batteries. They weigh a lot more for a given amount of capacity, and they maybe can't give such high peak power, but if you're not racing etc then I personally find Nimh perfectly good enough, cheaper, and less to worry about in terms of charging them, damaging them, etc.

I'm not familiar with the radio gear you've mentioned, so I'll leave that for someone else to comment, but I would guess that it'll be fine.

Are you close enough to go into Frankton Models? If you are, then go talk to Nathan, he'll steer you in the right direction. He really knows his stuff as hes been in the scene for years, and now his kids are front runners at most race meets.

All that sounds about right for buying in NZ. That kit is the cheapest I've seen it in a while so thats a win. You could save a bit ($50 - $100) by buying some parts offshore, but having  good local shop who will give you advice etc is worth more than that for the first time build. All of the parts you've linked are suitable for the car you've chosen too.

That battery is all you'll need for that and give about 45min runtime, so you may want a second battery, but won't need a better one.

You'll want a bearing kit as well, just buy a kit for that model. If you get more cars then its worth buying bearings in bulk as they become really cheap then and they ars a consumable.

Otherwise the Plasma Edge II will run well and be reliable, until you decide you want to upgrade it, or put a fast motor in and break it. I wouldn't spend much on upgrades, there are heaps available, but you'll sink a fortune into it if you get carried away. I have a few TT02 kits and they have taken years of abuse in the backyard with my sons friends being less than sympathetic to them

The TBLE-02S lacks a LiPo cutoff, and needs to either be modified internally or used with an external LiPo alarm. However it supports both brushed and brushless motors. The HW1060 has a LiPo cutoff but no brushless support.

I find my TT-02B to run very well on 2S LiPo and 13.5t brushless power, so I use a TBLE-02S and external LiPo alarm on mine, but you can achieve similar performance with a brushed motor and a HW1060 - it will just require more regular motor maintenance and give slightly shorter runtimes.
