M07 Concept/ Mugen CRX

Recommended Posts

So it’s been a while since I actually did a full model build so I delved under the bed and brought out this. 5A155976-3356-4261-9F30-E2D4334C80DD.jpg

I love the M chassis cars and this seems to be the pinnacle of fwd M chassis’s. Just looking through the box the plastics and included items are a different level to the M05/6 base models. I bought myself an M3 tap and boy I wish I’d used one on the XV01 and the TD4. So much easier. So below are pictures of bag A construction.

found them!!! 47D32142-BEB6-4D27-AAB4-61D56FEB6802.jpg

i have to say this is lovely to build. The quality etc is brilliant. A clever little touch is there a hole in the steering mechanism that allows you to get at the diff casing screw without having to dismantle it.

Bag C onwards is the time that you have to decide wheelbase. There are only two choices, unlike the three of the lesser chassis’s , I am using the medium 225mm chassis for the Mugen CRXD2AEE191-7A7E-4C6B-B99A-86F704852542.jpg

M07s are lovely to build, top notch kits, the only bit that baffled me was Tamiya's decision to make the builder drill the holes on the rear hubs themselves rather than coming from the factory like that!

Yes front and rear. Maybe it’s something to do with the mould/ moulding process ? It just clicks together as a Tamiya should!!!

So as in life bag C follows bag B!!!7DB8B894-0C71-4907-A852-0D78A621BA94.jpg

pretty straightforward stuff. In fact very much follows the front end construction without the driveshafts or steering. There is one important fact to note and that is you need to read the instructions and build the right wheelbase for the body that you are using. Now it would appear from the last picture that I did not!! However that was fairly easy to remedy albeit annoying, but it also threw up another problem. The promotional material stated that the chassis is suitable for M05 body shells of M or L size. So the Mugen is M and came on an M05 so is a perfect fit. Wrong , at least the body fits the wheelbase just not the bodyposts 😈 The front posts are fixed whereas the rears can be rotated and as they are cranked they move the post forwards or backwards. Again not a problem, the problem is the Mugen shell is pre-drilled!!! The front is perfect, however the rears are not. You end up with two options either redrilling holes in the roof or as I chose further up the rear screen from the originals. There are now two slots in the rear screen which is a shame!! Pictures to follow.

Shocks made, no pictures because we’ve all seen them built, body painted, wheels on. Electrics and stickers to go!!7741EFBF-FF2D-4B21-A1BD-944838F386C6.jpg

There is normally a predrilled and non drilled (sometimes 'lightweight') option with some bodies. Not sure if this is the case with the CR-X, but a few of the other m-chassis bodies had this option. Most front posts on these cars are in the same position, directly in line with the front axle. It's a shame you had to drill extra holes. I have the late model swift on my M07, where the rears lined up. Shame really, think the CR-X is the best candidate for the M07. ☹️

Not the end of the world just would have preferred it without the extra holes. I agree it certainly looks the part. Really neat little fast car so matches the the chassis to a tee.

Looks better with the stickers on. I went with the silver sports tuned motor and a 21t pinion. Will run on 2s lipo so should be ok for the tennis courts!!F6120E9D-00FF-4BA5-B2CB-ABE621D20DD0.jpg

I chose the CRX for my M-07 after the “racing” Protoform started getting beaten up.  The chassis is great, really fun to build and drive. Yours makes me wish that I’d chosen red!

Really lovely build, looks like a scale model.
