Building a TT-02 Audi Quattro A2 for rally

Recommended Posts

Just got my TT-02 in the mail the other day! Going to get paint tomorrow and more parts soon. Hopefully this will help others with rally built TT-02's!Screenshot_20221103-135217.png

More parts arrived!

Here are the springs I chose because they were recommended to me. Should I do soft in the front and hard/medium in the back of the other way around?

Also I bought the high speed gear set.PXL_20221104_171402381.thumb.jpg.e01e1a1fcacfca60583bcdff516cec59.jpg

I thought I would also try this 2s Ovonic battery because it's supposed to be the largest battery you can fit (I doubt it) and people say it's a good battery 👍

I mainly run Zeee batteries but all of them were supposedly too big for the TT-02

Following with interest, which shocks will you be using?

I will be using the 60mm yeah racing shock gear shocks. I was recommended them because I will be modding the chassis to have a higher ride height.

60mm eye to eye is what I used but I had to use the lower mounting point on the arms which required it's own tricks to make sure the springs and retainers don't interfere with the arms. If you limit the stroke with internal spacers you could use the normal (upper) mounting position. The limiting factor on a TT-02 (once you have trimmed the limiting tabs on the arms and knuckles) is in the drive shafts. But writing this almost requires a spoiler alert! Enjoy the build 😊 Making a rally car with the TT-02 is a huge amount of fun.

Went to the hobby shop and picked up the paint I needed. Looking at painting it today and detail tonight or tomorrow.

Yeah that's what I heard so I'm just going to use the lower mounts until I can get some new drive shafts hopefully in the near future.

I would recommend keeping the plastic stock ones if you can stand the sight of them ;) since they hold up so well in the gritty stuff the car will be exposed to when running off-road. Universals will not provide much improvement in down travel (none at all in my case actually... I installed universals in the front - Yeah Racing ones). But not to worry, your setup should provide about 19mm of down stop with the kit tires which is plenty to make the car enjoyable. I use 13mm of ride height.

Nice work.  I use 55mm 3Racing aluminium shocks on my TT02 rally (with upper mounting holes on suspension arms) and get 20mm ride height which I find is good enough for most of my off road adventures 😊  I suggest getting the Tamiya or Yeah Racing aluminium rear hubs (with 3 degree toe in) and trimming the lower shaft of the front steering hubs (note: there is great video from Mark Bryan RC on YouTube that shows you how to do this) as both of these mods will help you maximise ground clearance without fowling the drive shafts.  I also highly recommend using the Tamiya TT02 dust cover or one from Kamtec (which I use) to protect the electronics and stop gravel from jamming up the steering and centre drive shaft.  Happy rallying!

Starting to do the body today!!

Got all the mounting holes done and cut out the body.PXL_20221105_213301212.thumb.jpg.13a92858ea520c1042a0a49a03425daa.jpg

I did mess up the front ones a little bit but the light still fits. PXL_20221105_204525108.thumb.jpg.8c03ac0e410fb32a452d057847dc74e7.jpg

Here's the masking done. The film got roughed up in a few spots so I just tapen them up.PXL_20221105_225551825.thumb.jpg.e58fd407cd409f4b2201688cbc279eb7.jpg

Hand painted the grill. It looks pretty good so far. Just going to chalk the uneven lines up as wear and tear from rallying...PXL_20221105_234134354.thumb.jpg.723d91da01e75fd8a39e5c183b52e98b.jpg

Too much of a perfectionist to leave it looking like that so I fixed it up and now it looks much better!

There a quite a few overlaps, slightly off, and bubbles in the stickers but after getting as much fixed as I can I am pretty happy with it! I will do some more touch ups tomorrow (well later today I guess) seeing as it is 1:00am.

Also I will actually mount everything because in the photo everything was just stuck on for the photo. Thanks guys for helping me with this!

Alrighty!

I think I'm finally done with this! It took 13.5 hours in total to do and I'm pretty happy with it. Just got all the accessories and light buckets in because I don't think I'll be adding a light kit. Anyways the rest of the electronics should arrive soon so hopefully the rest of the kit will be built this weekend!PXL_20221106_172630271.thumb.jpg.8e677bbaa4606493f5aa1a9edac82c1d.jpgPXL_20221106_172639127.thumb.jpg.28da242f41380f9e43c005bf6c8f9374.jpg

Also I did touch up the front paint so I don't cringe every time I look at it. It's so beautiful 🤩

Are you talking ride height or down stops? 😐 20mm ride height seems like there would not be a whole lot of drop remaining.

Not sure what you mean by “down stops”?  I’m referring to ground clearance.
