Sgt.Speirs 1240 Posted November 14, 2022 Hello to my new build thread, actually I didn't want to make a build thread for this chassis, because this chassis is not so special. But since it was special how I got this chassis, I decided to make a build thread. If you are not interested in the story, you can jump to the next section End of June, during my lunch break at work, I got a message about a local ad about the mentioned TB Evo 5 NIB kit for less than 100€. I saw the messages since 5 min later, but this was enough that the kit was no longer available. I shared the missed chance with my friends. So far so good. A month later, one of the friends saw the same ad again. We were still joking about whether the ad was serious or a fake. But we both wrote to the seller, with my friend being faster to view the kit. In the evening he sent me a picture of the NIB kit and asked me when I would like to pick it up from him (for the same price)... This build thread is a tribute to this man, who give me the chance to explore a new chassis family beside the TA chassis. His name is Kevin…also known as @wtcc5. For those of you who don’t know him. He was mentioned last week at „Tamiya Legends“ and „RC kicks“ for this Terra Scorcher Carbon Chassis. Thanks once again😊 Building a new kit over the Christmas vacations is a tradition with me (as a teenager my Grasshopper II & Manta Ray and since re-entering the RC hobby in 2020 my Avante 2011 & Egress 2013). This kit is predestined for that and I'm looking forward to it. But let’s start with the box and the parts inside. Frontside of the box… … and the backside. The content of the box The overview over the complete package Aluminum bulkhead parts and motor heat sink Damper, differential and drive shaft parts Aluminum prop shaft and the carbon parts And the screw and washer packs Pleasant anticipation is the greatest joy…only 6 weeks until christmas
wtcc5 4679 Posted November 14, 2022 Such a beauty! Glad you decided to build it and show it off here! Please don’t forget to remind me next time, that I got a nice additional (carbon) part for it for you 3
Sgt.Speirs 1240 Posted November 14, 2022 @wtcc5: Then I am curious to know which part it is

I disagree, the Evo 5 is, to this day, the most beautiful TB chassis. Especially the one piece bulkheads, even though it must be a nightmare for maintenance. I wish I could get one for 100€ 😁 Looking forward to build
ThunderDragonCy 7776 Posted November 18, 2022 Beautiful! The carbon version of TB03, which is my favourite shaft drive tamiya.

Sgt.Speirs 1240 Posted January 3, 2023 Busy last week…but now is everything prepared for the build:
Sgt.Speirs 1240 Posted January 4, 2023 The build starts with the lower deck parts. In step 2, we start with the rear section. The rear bulkheads... ...and the rear ball differential. Everything ready for the ball diff grease... ...and inserting the steel ball. And ball diff done! Then we continue with the installation of the ball diff... ...the spur gear and the gear covers... ...combine this with the motor mount... For those who are familier with this model, I know that the center cup for the propoeller shaft is not the correct one. But I realized this first when I was building the front gear / bulkheads Then attaching the rear bulkheads onto the chassis. So far a great pleasure to build this chassis and once again thanks to @wtcc5 to have the chance to build this from NIB. Absolutely stunning... 5
TwistedxSlayer 1290 Posted January 7, 2023 Amazing piece of kit. Looks stunning.
svenb 3735 Posted January 7, 2023 Very nice indeed. Use some titanium screw's 🙂👍

Use some titanium screw's 🙂👍 My previous project (TRF417 V5) was quite expensive, so I will probably have to do without titanium screws. And since the chassis will only be for the shelf, it would only be my lighter wallet that would notice the titanium screws
Sgt.Speirs 1240 Posted January 8, 2023 Today we continue with the front "gear box". First we build the front one-way differential... ...and the front bulkhead. Attaching the front one-way diff into the bulkheads... ...mount the gear cover... ...and center cup for the the propeller shaft. Before we attach the front bulkhead on to the chassis, we have to build the steering linkage: And now we can attache the front bulkhead and the upper deck. A beautiful silhouette...
svenb 3735 Posted January 8, 2023 Lovely looking chassis 👍🏻 do you know what are the differences between the 5 and the 5 MS?
Sgt.Speirs 1240 Posted January 8, 2023 @svenb: As far as I know is the main difference the mounting of the spur gear. On the MS, the spur gear is only plugged in with the rear bulkhead. So you can remove/replace the spur gear by only removing the upper deck + upper brace. On the non-MS you have to remove the rear center cup first, then the motor plate and then you can slide of the spur gear from the propeller joint…more complicated.
Sgt.Speirs 1240 Posted January 9, 2023 Then we go on with the suspension arms. First the rear ones... The rear universal shafts... ...and the rear axles. After that (and this is no surprise) we build the front arms + universal shafts... ...and the front axles (lying on my workplace) And ready for assembling... And the final steps for today are the rear and the front stabilizers. Attaching the rear... ...and the front one. That's for today. In the next steps we will build the damper and complete the chassis...
Sgt.Speirs 1240 Posted January 19, 2023 For today we build and install the dampers, take a look at the intended motor and make some modifications and then finish the chassis by installing the motor, servo and bumper. Ok, let's doing the dampers. Compared with the aeration damper of my TRF417 V5, the TB Evo 5 uses standard TRF dampers (not the BigBore one): Damper stays and mounting material: Front... ...and rear... ...and complete. Then we have here the intended motor...a Super Stock TZ. But I don't like the brass bushing inside the motor, so the plan is to replace them by ball bearing. To get the bushing from the end bell easier out, it got a cold treatment. Installed ball bearings And then we install the motor. We continue with the servo... The last steps are the wheels with Tamiya standard tires. And finally the body posts, the front bumper and the blue motor heat sink. That's for now with this great build. After some restauration projects this was once again a build from a NIB kit and I enjoyed every step In the next days I will take some final photos...
Juhunio 6828 Posted January 19, 2023 Lovely build as always @Sgt.Speirs 👏 I have one stashed away for a rainy day, along with the titanium screw set 😎 What body set do you have in mind for yours?
Sgt.Speirs 1240 Posted January 19, 2023 1 hour ago, Juhunio said: What body set do you have in mind for yours? As the TB Evo 5 will be part of my chassis (only) collection, there is no body planned for this. But I‘m preparing a Nissan Skyline R32 with Calsonic livery for my TRF417 V5 which will also fit on the TB Evo 5. It would be a pity to hide this chassis under a body

The Evo 5 (like many other Tamiya TC chassis) uses springs from the 53440 On Road Hard set, where yellow is the medium weight spring I wish Tamiya sold the individual weights separately, I end up with an awful lot of reds and whites kicking around through having to buy the sets 🙄
Sgt.Speirs 1240 Posted January 19, 2023 @Juhunio: You‘re right, the yellow springs are the medium ones of spring set 53440/53163. Since I still have two sets from previous projects and the chassis will be a shelf queen, I'm thinking of installing the white extra hard springs.
Juhunio 6828 Posted January 19, 2023 Good choice, I did the same on my Evo III and the white works well with the blue and carbon in my opinion
Sgt.Speirs 1240 Posted January 28, 2023 It took some time, but today I present the final pics of the TB Evo 5 build (with white springs). Detail views of the front... ...the rear... ...and of the motor (Super Stock TZ). A great building experience...but now off to the shelf
