So after your Turbo Scorpion build (which envies me even more), shall we see a Fazer Rally car in your next build? :D

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t start Googling 1/10 Rally cars today.

Couldn’t see any Rally Fazers yet here in Oz. It would also depend on what Bodies are available. Tamiya have still got to be best for quality & choice of bodies, but others are catching up 😉

I love the realistic detail and period colour and style of this body shell. What shell is it? I am working on a Kamtec MK1 257mm wheelbase but I think it's relatively low on detail.

Thanks mate. It’s one of these..

There are other versions, the decals aren’t that great that come with it, and you have to use your imagination cutting out some bodyshell as there isn’t much to go on. I was originally planning to paint it Red like a 1/1 I had when was 19 but changed my mind.

Pretty happy with it though 👍🏻

@alvinlwh I too have an MF-01X to build! I can't remember whether I have all the hop-ups I want for it - struggled to find the servo mount. I bought the Escort version but intend to put a Monster Swift body on it.

I'm not the best driver and don't get much practice in. I get more enjoyment out of the rear drive M04 on the tarmac, maybe I need to get the M05RA on some gravel.

Mine will be entered in the budget rally built off so I am limiting my hopups. I just finished ordering the metal motor mount with AT's Cyber Monday sales, unfortunately they ran out of bearings for this chassis.

I actually dropped my M-05Ra to road height and enjoy it more on tarmac, but truth be told, I enjoy the MG Evo even more. It is much better than the M-05 OOB with no hopups (although I did threw a few in just because I can) than a M-05 with hopups costing more than 50% of the car, plus it is cheaper to start with.

I find it very interesting about the fact that local rc track park announced rally track that is going to open up next summer. I think that means I need to get one decent rally kit.. while I hit my kit quote for the year..

Old school, but the TA-03 deserves a mention. It was released as a rally car, WRX body, rally tires. I don't know how good a rally car it is, but it makes a pretty good drifter. Oh, it also has that front bias thing going on.

But like the XV-01, it also has some issues. The steering.

I haven't driven my XV-01 off road yet, only on tarmac and don't really have a problem with the steering. I've build it completely stock with exception of the long eyelets on the bottom of the oil shocks instead of the short ones used in the manual. Only on full droop and almost full steering angle the rod ends catch the chassis as mentionned in the " A sloooow XV-01 build" thread.

 20221123_101947.jpg20221123_102008.jpg

As you can see I haven't done anything to the rod ends or chassis to solve this because I haven't had any problems with this while driving. The weight of the car is enough to solve this driving on tarmac. If it appears to be a problem on driving off road on jumps or bumps before a corner I don't think it's that hard to solve, a bit of file work on the rod end and/or chassis will be enough it seems. Has the XV-02 the same problem?

No. Xv-02 has a very narrow chassis under the suspension arms and a totally different steering geometry. It has one issue of binding between the center driveshaft and the servo mount but that is a quick fix.

Well, now you have other options aside from the Fazer. :)

While yes the TA-03F is a good chassis for rallying and is what inspired the XV-01, unfortunately, parts are very scarce for this model as well as the TB-01/02. That's why I didn't include in the options anymore. Also, the kits themselves can't be bought brand new anymore unlike the ones I listed which are all available including the FF-03.

Yes this is one of the XV-01's flaws and the gear spacing inside the gearbox. The steering rod-rubbing issue can be solved by grinding/filing off some plastic where the ball caps are hitting. It's the common remedy.

With regards to the XV-02's steering issue, I've seen many owners complain about the stock plastic snapping/breaking easily. Some people have even tried filling the gap/hole with epoxy but it didn't solve the issue. The design was poor and Tamiya should have resolved this right away by re-doing the steering set on the newer batch. That is why many XV-02 owners had to modify theirs using TB-05 aluminum steering set or the recently released aluminum XV-02 steering set by Yeah Racing.

I don't think I can find a FF-03 anywhere in the UK (from shops). The one I got was from a Tamiya dealer out in the far east, and it had been sitting on the clearance shelf for years apparently.

Some interesting videos.

XV-02 vs XV-01LD (long damper spec) vs PTG-2 (notR)

PTG-2R on tarmac

The LC Racing is quite impressive and can match up to the XVs. It will now depend on driver skills.

XV-01 vs PTG-2

They all look like great fun👍🏻

Would I be right in thinking that the the XV01 gets its handling characteristics from the weight of the motor up front?

Just thinking if it’s possible to get other chassis to perform in a similar way by adding weight to the front to counter act a motor weight at the rear?

I think that's perfectly possible but what makes the XV01 so much fun to drive IMO is the fact you get these characteristics with a very modest total weight, what won't be possible with the other chassis. TA03F is very similar but more suited to an on road setting IMO.

I believe some TT-02 and TB-03 owners  who converted their cars to rally tried to do that but still didn't get the same outcome from XV-01's driving characteristics.

Oh man, the TurboScorpion is just a beauty to have.  :D  ..not that I am saying the rally cars are not.  I can't wait to build my XV.

Just a note though.. the car is pretty quirky like the SandScorcher.  You may or may not like how it drives.  I like the old skool cars so I am completely fine with it, but does not drive anything like my modded SuperAstutes.  :D

That said, the Optima MID is just amazing in totality.

How is it compared to the Wild One? If the Turbo Scorpion is better in any way, I'm sold. I have the Wild One and I'm totally fine with its driving. Although the steering link ball caps would pop out once in while. Haha! :D

I don't exactly remember how my WildOne drove in detail, but it had turn bias on one side due to weight distribution issues.  The TurboScorpion does not have that and has much better dampers that match the vehicle weight.. so in that respect the TurboScorpion drives a lot better in my case.  In fairness, I did not put much time into the WildOne's suspension as I could not find softer springs for it and the car is just over sprung out of the box which does not help.

Yeah, the Optima MID is pretty much my favorite buggy.. just a secret, but there is another one headed to me this week..  B)  ..anyway, back to rally cars.  :D

Then I'm really sold to it. I really want the TS for nostalgia and not really the performance type as compared to modern buggies. :)

So just add a TS and a Optima Mid to cart and click ‘Buy’ 👍🏻 Easy peezie. Lucky you didn’t just check out with the PTG2 because think of all the money you have now saved in shipping 😉

Can't believe you left the TA02 off the list! I've tried many other chassis and I always go back to that legend for rally. I do have the XV01 on the to buy list though, I love my TA03F's front bias and it will be great to experience on dirt.

Yes it's interesting that the TA02 handles so well on dirt with only a few mods, considering it's rear mounted motor position, but you can really just chuck the thing into corners and it just slides it's way through :) Even better with the vintage HPI inline battery tray conversion chassis, gets more weight to the front and decreases inertia.
