Even better with the vintage HPI inline battery tray conversion chassis, gets more weight to the front and decreases inertia.

Wow the this I learn on here that I never knew existed 👍🏻

I do like my TA02SW Porsche a lot, (only driven on road though).

I saw a build & run thread on the 40th Anniversary Jager Porsche a while on a different site before I got mine and he pointed out that using a Shorty battery pack off centre helped weight distribution tremendously and kept things in a straight line.

I’ve yet to find out properly with a second TA02SW I’ve just finished.

This thread has now opened up a whole new train of thought now with another question 😉,

As drifting and Rallying are similar, (I haven’t done either properly yet). Do people generally install Gyros to Rally cars as much as Drifters?

Some of my cars are hooked up to a Flysky GT5 Tx and apparently the receiver’s have inbuilt gyros, but I can’t say I really notice much difference from using other cars with a Futaba 3PV Tx without?

Is just the Flysky is a cheap attempt at gyro or would a more expensive dedicated purpose made gyro work better?

I too recently got a GT5  and love the built in gyro. I also got some Turbo Racing which also comes with the optional gyro RX option. They save the space and cost of fitting an additional piece of gear. I used them on my drifter and have to say I do find they works well.

Can't believe you left the TA02 off the list! I've tried many other chassis and I always go back to that legend for rally.

I do have the XV01 on the to buy list though,

Check that XV-01 out from your cart now. It'll help you move on from the TA-02 and help you experience what a proper modern rally car is. You'll thank me though.

I tried this with my FF-03RR and S10. Both were running with Radiolink RC4GS RX (with built-in gyro) and activated them. Well it didn't turn out great and very unpleasant to drive because the gyro tries to correct that car's movement and makes it run straight right after turning and spoils the drifting. So I deactivated both and didn't bother using the gyro again.

I can't believe I forgot about it :D This car kicked off whole Scale RC rally thing here in Czechia and it was The rally car for years. Many people still race them today. Although, only the red gearboxes suggest it was a TA02 in the past :D

This is fast becoming a favourite thread.

I just need Christmas and some time off to arrive so I can crack on with my XV01. I’m slightly terrified by the decals.

Me too! Mine sat in the box for nearly a year. I've now built the chassis but I'm working on an escort shell first because the Lancia decals scare the bejesus out of me. In doing that I've got myself all excited about various other shells now. And bought an XV-02 chassis to boot.

I can see myself continuing to buy and paint various different bodies over many months before I pluck up the courage to make an almighty hash of that Lancia. I might have a whole fleet of plain old Fords before anything gets a Martini stripe.

Rally is perhaps also the format that I might actively go looking for a go at racing in. TC novice rally meet, anyone?

Some TB chassis I saw on the net today

Strange that I couldn't find a TB-02 rally car as well as TB-04. Anyone else can share TB rally-converted chassis?

My TB02 unofficial rally car.

Had to grind the front arms to get some droop. Apart from that, no specific rally parts

Over Christmas this will be my first build in well over 15 years! An XV-02 with Evo 7 body and 4000kv motor (overkill?) and a Savox 1254 servo...

Didn't you just weaken the suspension arm? Why not shave from the chassis instead. Remove the droop stopper and the edges of the chassis where it limits the suspension arm's movement.

Great thread.

I’ve rallied Rc since the TA01 (a group of us had the celica, cossy and lancia). .. other than touring car racing it’s my favourite.

I always preferred the TA01/02 for rally for a long time. The TB01 is tough but would actually overheat more, and not feel responsive as it was  soo heavy. That can be fixed with the lighter diffs and alloy prop from the other non rally versions. (You can also just fit in tt02 diffs).

The XV01 was a huge jump and I adore it. The others couldn’t match it.

the LG is nice, doesn’t handle as nicely as the XV, it’s more unstable with any sort of bumps etc. the biggest issue is that it’s delicate and the parts wear down excessively quick. My friend replaced his with the XV02 and it’s night and day.

The xv02 is more direct than the xv01, not necessarily faster around the whole corner. The drive train is nice and responsive. I don’t think it feels quite as scale when I drive it, but it’s great.

They recently mounted the centre diff into the XV02 and it’s phenomenal on mixed surfaces.. So stable. Also no steering breakages, but he is a decent driver.

Anyway Santa has been asked for a XV02 with centre diff..

For rally fans of the older cars this was a great thread.

Not sure how I remember this stuff. I know ta03 and tb02 feature heavily.

The majority of TB-01 releases were based on rally cars. I can't remember why I think it but I think mine started life as an Evo. It will be re-born as a rally car one day.

TB-01.

Enough said. Lol.

The TB-01 was based upon the TG10 nitro car.

Released as a Race Car with the NSX and Enzo Ferrari body with lightweight prop and diffs.

The Rally Car came as Ford Focus, Lancer Evo 7, Impreza 2001, German rally impreza and the Arai Impreza with metal diffs and a steel prop and dust cover, along with a foam insert to protect the motor.

The TB01 made a much better rally car than the TB02 due to the upper brace to reduce chassis flex, the TB03 and later have a lower sided tub which isn't great for stone or debris protection.

The TB01 also has the advantage of having gear diffs rather than ball diffs.

As mentioned TT02 diffs drop straight in.

Not as heavy as you'd think.

Check the Tamiya Weigh In thread.

I moved from a rally modified TT02 (ground clearance and steering angle increase mods) to a XV01, then to a XV01 with an Embie racing chassis and now I have a XV02.

I liked the TT02, but the XV01 blew it away, I love how the front engine makes the car pivot on the front when turning hard, love the dust proofing (I like running on dirt mainly) and how well the car is set and how well it adapts to the terrain. Im a pretty bad driver and the XV01 was so easy to drive and so predictable for me, the Embie chasis gave it a nice improvement on steering, maybe a bit extreme, but I liked the handling although I was not able to take full advantage of it (lousy driver as I said) and I missed the dustproofing of the original chassis.

The XV02 is more neutral, I like it, its easy and forgiving, I have a central oil diff and its a blast to drive, used a TB05 adjustable ackerman steering set (plug and play) and will try at some point the Embie upperdeck to mount the servo upside down for direct steering. So far I have like it very much, I like the drivetrain much more than the one in the XV01, and I like that is easier to maintain, the XV02 is a very good car overall but as someone pointed out, the XV01 has a more scale feeling when you drive it for leisure.

As another entry I would also include the TUX rally car, a car using parts from Xray cars mounted on a very nice looking chassis, only seen videos of it and pictures in instagram but it looks like a very well thought beast!

Found this TB02 on the internet. unfortunately, I couldn't find more extremes mods I've seem before racers replaced their TB02s with modded Xrays and XVs

tb004.JPG.086a88141e22b24bcf1955a839e6d51d.JPG

And this is my TB03 from 2014-2015 (sorry, I couldn't find better pictures)

First, I tried to reverse the whole car to get more weight to the front axle. It sorta worked, but I didn't like the steering geometry and high CG

IMG_20221203_124109.jpg.d1042f388380d949596dd93f8e49e377.jpg

So, I eventually ended up building my own chassis using shorty lipol to get more center-front weight distribution.

IMG_20221203_124015.jpg.a095be87a730bbd17994ecdaf30269c3.jpg

Apparently I got the right Idea, since custom builds based on Xray XB4 drivetrain, with similar layout to mine, became popular a few years ago - like this one from TUX racing.

FB_IMG_1670068322244.jpg.5c60a3509cf2a436bf499b9229088392.jpg

Apparently, TUX are distributing their chassis, so it can be included in the list (I didn't know that before)

I went on a bit of a kit buying spree back in the day so I actually have a few of these new in box, but for some reason can't bring myself to build any of them just yet, so went for the XV-02. Although your post is making me want to build one now :D

TB03 had ball doffs as stock, but much more reliable than TB02 - with several upgrade options - TB04 gear diff, one-way, or TRF502 ball diff gear (12 balls), which gave me the best results.

Tub with low sides wasn't an issue, and moulded flange around the edge helped to keep the dust cover on the chassis :)
