Just an idea, but wondered what people think -

Clearly this forum is a wealth of information and help - and people new and old to the group use it a lot to get to the bottom of thorny issues.

It does strike me that a number of "stock" questions do get posted over and over again - I too have been guilty. The following list in not exhaustive, but are examples

Painting tips

Paint stripping

Gear ratios and pinions

Tool tips

Shimming

Driving tips and safety

Would it be an idea to get some of our most experienced members to write articles for a "technical knowledge" section of the main site. A well written article on how to paint lexan, how to paint hard body, how gear ratios work, useful tools before you start - that kind of thing.

I am sure there are plenty more ideas that could be added and would be a great help to newbies visiting the site.

Whatcha think?

Hi paul,

great idea, been raised a few times before

http://www.tamiyaclub.com/xforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9808 just one of the variations.

I'm all for it but no one ever sends me anything. Got one step further last time as TamiyaMike actual did send me something on scorcher body differences - which I can only really add when I have a few more to make a propoer section.

as always I'm up for it - if people send me stuff I will create a section. If everyone waits for everyone else to do it (or me) its just not going to happen.

Cheers

A good idea - only problem with this - it isn't as easy as it sounds to knock up an easy to understand document. I tried to do one ages ago for a similar situation at work. If you think about gear ratios for example: Do we have a generic answer for all cars or do we break it down by type of car. If a newbie looks at a document that states taller gearing = higher top speed they could well end up burning out ESC's and motors etc. Some cars only have adjustment on the pinion, others on the spur etc. Some types of motor will pull higher gearing than others etc, etc. I wouldn't want my name against any advice unless it was very detailed and specific otherwise you end up with people wanting to claim for new ESC's..........I suppose the club would put a big disclaimer on the items?

See what you mean - got to get it right! - but surely on topics like painting one of the gurus on here could easily write a definitive article.

I'm by no means an expert, but If I get time, I'll happily dig out ALL posts on painting, and pool them together to form an article. Will submit to netsmith for checking, or maybe post a link (my problem is I dont have web space to store it)

Paul,

If you email it to me i'll make sure it finds a home. If you are basing you articular on info gained from posts on the forum, please make sure that the last paragraph credits all those original authors of the info.

Is anyone involved in any sort of online community where this problem has been solved? I know this happens on every other online fourm I particiapte in.

I think this is just the nature of online forums. So nobody should be upset if a huge tech section is created and people still ask the questions. It will happen.

However, a tech section would be cool to have.

I'd go for a Tech Section too... with painting tips (camo, masking,...) and all sorts of usefull tricks

You mean a bit like

Hints and tips about Tamiyaclub and RC in general

This is the place to enter all those 'how do i...' type questions which relate to the site and how to use it.id="blue">

[;)]

I can't really see what new here - we already have this section of the forum. Anyone can post a how to guide here, and people can ask questions about it if need be.

The other option is an area seperate from the forum where these things are prepared as 'downloads' - but then you don't get the commenting option...

Either way the problem is not how or where, its back to the same issue - we still need the people to write them and send them in.

Lots of people like to read them, unfortunately very few are prepared to take the time to write them

How about an FAQ like in some forums and newsgroups, I remember there existed one in Robys old board, does anyone still have it?

Or a nice place with many tips about repairing bodies with CD from big ISP's, or how to repair a radio box with old music-tape boxes. [8D] [;)]

chris

could you do it with a topic ie stripping hard bodies, stripping lexan etc

then people could issue comments like you would od on a model, the moderators could then add the 'useful' comments / descriptions to the list of tips below each heading

this will avoid all the chat and fget a consise list of tips for a subject. the forums are good but sometimes the treads go off on one and make finding info hard

just a vodka fueled thought

Top idea guys!

I need a complete idiots guide to:- PayPal, Ebay, subscriptions (that one gave me loads of trouble) digital pictures, digital movies and loads of other "IT" type stuff related to using the site. All the sorts of things which us over 50s struggle with!

I can contribute general articles about electric motors and gearing.

I started electric car racing at club level nearly 40 years ago and am an electrical engineer by trade so I may be able to help on these subjects.

Cheers Paul.
