BB01 BBX RC : speculation/rumours/hope

Recommended Posts

Hoping its a decent buggy  that is reliable and durable.

Just about to start building a DF-03 and getting hop-ups is a mission!

Was planning on the TD4 next, so something that will tempt me more than that.

I'm thinking that maybe it's not a normal 4wd buggy. Tamiya have recently released the TD4 and have now brought out a fully hopped up TT-02B so I doubt they'll add a third to the list. I suspect it'll be a scale looking buggy

Hopefully reminiscent of the 1980's Baja racers....

I hope you are right. They have had decades of sales from the the Sand Scorcher, and full-size baja bugs have moved on a long way since then. Is it too much to hope for an updated equivalent? Their ties with Volkswagen are strong, as already stated elsewhere.

Yep. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a modern take on the Sand Scorcher, with modern plastics and happy with a lexan body. Imagine that ripping up and down the beach with a long whip antenna with a flag on the end....

I think ANY new Tamiya chassis is exciting.  It will be fun to see what this is...

Is it definite that the original list that started this thread will all be released at Nuremberg this year? Certain ones have whetted my appetite ( despite having promised myself to have a very low purchase year) and it would be a shame if they fell by the wayside. When is the show? March seems to ring a bell!!!

A long armed XV02 might be a possibility I suppose. If they do go that way though the wheelbase will be to short for a competitive buggy (like the TT02B).

Or it's a longer armed version of the new MB01? That could be cool - an M-Chassis scale buggy, which sounds like something Big T would do

The list on the previous page shows only A parts (bumper), C-parts (arms) and D-parts (uprights). That doesn't fit well with XV02 nor MB01, but it would work with TC-01. in that case, a longer chassis variant would be benefical for the base chassis, too (the formula E body is very disproportional)

Anyone else bored of waiting……

Me.

Every time I get a notification on this thread, I hope someone has found out some more info. But, I'm bored of waiting now. Especially as when we do get to see what's new, there will still be months of waiting to actually get one.... Hopefully, Tamiya will have learnt from the past, and will have stocked model shops so they are ready to go as soon as the Toy Fair is done. Wouldn't that be marvellous?

No one shares my optimism then... Nor me really. It's just a day dream of how things should be.

I think this is a big challenge in the modern "digital" world.  If the kit was ready to ship when it was announced publicly, it would likely mean that it would need to be revealed to distributors and dealers months earlier.  With the amount of people that would have access to this info, some sort of leak would almost be a certainly, IMO.  Keeping it completely behind closed doors likely just ensures that the secret remains a secret.

Additionally, Tamiya could be using interest/orders from the launch as a basis for initial production runs.  When I worked in the bicycle industry, this was common practice, where dealer orders + 10% (give or take) = model year production run.

Also, just typing stuff as it pops to mind, so really what do I know?

I think you're not too far off from the truth there. However, they seemed to get it wrong with the Blockhead Wild One as lots of people didn't get one of the first batch.

It is difficult to know how their product planning works.

Factory time for a product may be booked well ahead of the time it is first announced on social media, fixing the production run figure.

Interest / disappointment can then be gauged to determine if / how large a further run needs to be.

They don't always get it right, which is why some models end up discounted.down the line. Or a local distributor misjudges demand and over-orders.

It's also worth noting that in some industries ( thinking game consoles here), they deliberately make fewer units than predicted demand to create a bit of a frenzy and it seems to help with sales. Maybe Tamiya do something similar.

Triggering your notifications...and probably something else :D

I'm guessing that it is a new cheaper 2wd off-road platform.  The DT-01/02/03 is fairly old and sits at the highest price point as an entry to 2wd off-road - Arrma has a 2wd granite voltage with battery/radio for ~$100, Kyosho has the EZ platform (most recent - Monster Tracker 2.0) with radio for ~$130, Traxxas has the Rustler/Bandit/Stampede set for around $170 with radio.  All of those are assembled, with oil dampers & bearings.  The Tamiya XSA sits around $170, but still requires a radio/battery, and don't include bearings and maybe oil dampers (depends?).  A cheap radio & battery will push it over $200.

I'm not saying these products are great - My sons Arrma Granite had a shock leak very early on, but easily fixed.  The styling, egads the styling on these - ugh. It is like they pulled a background design from a corporate powerpoint presentation and slapped it all over a 'truck'.  Paint splashes/stripes that are just soooo... generic.

The dt-02/03 also doesn't have the big-tire truggy that seems to be the most durable/popular version to introduce someone to, as the big tires absorb a lot of impacts.  Tamiya has a LOT of trucks, but they none are a modern beginner chassis.  In hindsight, I think the Aqroshot should have been released with monster truck style tires like the lunchbox or monster beetle.  A lot of people on TamiyaClub have done something similar. As an X-SA with offroad tires it might have appealed to a lot more people, simply because it would have been the Tamiya take on the entry level basher truck.

I couldn't agree more. They look and work far better than the undersized gripless wonders that come in the box.

Tease! :D   Maybe the BB-01 is a longer version of the CC-01 and will have a Dakar Truck style body on top.
