BB01 BBX RC : speculation/rumours/hope

What makes you think it's fragile? I think compared to all other 2wd Tamiya buggies it should be bomb proof!

I hope you're right but, from my experience, cars with trailing arm suspension tend to spit dog bones more often than a-arm cars - especially after an odd landing.

It's the result of defection and the position of the suspension attachment points relative to the drive cup.  A-arms usually attach directly below and near the cup on both ends of the bone while swing arms and radius rods usually attach some distance away from the cups providing space for the bone to exit when those parts deflect.

The Swing Shaft Hop-Up seems to be the same as in the box, then why it is sold as an Hop-Up? (Both 63mm and look exactly the same)

@IXLR8 its not an actual dog bone (only in one end) so it cant be spitted all the way out, but problem is still present on this universal shaft on the ball-diff side it seems. We stil do not know how big this problem is?, but rather than weak/bending material it can also be that the ball-diff Axel cups is just to short (as suggested earlier they may need to be deeper, if ball end still can move freely in the cup that is)

I think if it becomes a common problem, an extra o-ring in one of the drive cups could fix it hopefully, or limiting suspension travel just a tiny bit.

Or maybe Tamiya will release stiffer, reinforced trailing arms.

Just started the first build. A couple of things :

1) If one is installing the slipper, the biggest pinion that will fit with the stock Spur is 48P 29T. 30T is too tight. Maybe some filing will enable 30T to fit.

IMG-4878.jpg

2) The esc plate allows for good sized esc but the shroud covering the esc if low profile. Likely it is made for Tamiya esc specifically. I cannot fit the Skyrc 50A esc if a fan is mounted. One likley position to place the esc is the back of the battery tray. If one uses a shorty Lipo, then this is possible. However, the esc would need to have a remote switch. My other choice, the Skyrc 120A, has the switch on the body of the esc. Access is too difficult. For now, the only other way I can think of is to dispense with the esc shroud and use a piece of polycarbonate (I have 0.5mm sheets) to fashion a shroud that will accommodate the esc. I have not tried this yet. Hopefully, there is not interference with the roll bar pillars.

Or, a couple shims added to the axle (between the inner bearing and axle cup) will effectively increase bone-to-cup engagement and solve the problem.  ... if it's actually a problem and there's space for shims.

RC10 Worlds cars had a similar issue but that was due to AE making a bone that was too short for that application.  Flipping the blue washer from behind the drive pin to the inner bearing gap seemed to help that car.

Maybe I can look into this issue in-depth soon because my BBX HAS SHIPPED!!!!  Hallelujah!

Yesterday, I used Tower's automated message system to cancel the pre-order after discovering that Amain had one copy left on their shelf -- so I ordered it.  I just checked and Amain has my order listed as "shipped".   Unfortunately I've lost the early pre-order discount offered by Tower but I really don't care at this point.

Now, I'll need to work on getting the backyard track back into shape.  I'm really looking forward to this.  :)

PS30 Brilliant blue seems to looks much better than PS4 blue

This is a handsome kit except for the wheels & tires. The silver JC Optima wheels matches the roll cage nicely.

Not quite done but it is a handsome buggy. The JC silver Optima wheels complements the roll cage color well.

PS30 Brilliant Blue is a better color choice than box art as many on social media has shown.

This new BBX just came in local e-market for $ 300. Is it worth that price? For comparison, some DT-02 sand viper just surfaced again for $ 100. That Bbx price is same with the new TD4

For me it doesnt make sense a new 2wd buggy is having same price with a recent 4wd buggy.

What is your local price for this new buggy btw?

Here in the States the Sand Viper is $175, the BBX is $255, while the TD4 is $346.

I do wish that Tamiyas prices were more consistent between countries. We get reasonable prices on some models while we're gouged a good extra $100 on others, and have to deal with MAP nonsense.

I agree completely with your color and wheel/tire choices.  Well done sir.

I very much like the stock BBX wheels and tires as well.  It's good that Tamiya has made it so easy to swap them.  There are a lot of smart design features with this new car.

I paid $500 AUD here in Australia (its on pre-order through a hobby shop, I should have it in about 1 week). So thats about $330 US. I could have ordered through RCJaz, at $330 AUD, but with shipping, it brought that up to nearly $500 anyway.

I have a little spreadsheet to calculate the top speed for my buggies which provides some guidance on gearing for my cars on various types of motors. I imagine that I will equip this kit with a 17.5T (that's what I have installed at the moment) for stock class. Ideal (my opinion) gearing calls for a 30T but since it won't fit, I settled for 29T. That's just me being a bit of a anal retentive person :ph34r:.

What is the stock pinion? I'm away from home and can't recall.

I found the stock gearing adequately quick with 10.5T brushless and 2S LiPo. A little more top speed would be cool, but would be all too easy to have a big crash too - and I'm a terrible driver...

Ah, here it is addressed in the manual.  If the "drive shaft" slips out, try moving one or both MA13 shims to the inner most position on the axle.

I wouldn't say it was a useful reason:

Thank you for your recent order at TowerHobbies.com (Order #). Due to a recent systems migration and one-time system error, we are no longer able to process your credit card and ship your order. Unfortunately, this will require us to cancel your order.

I got this exact same email, but was also given a 25% off code for the inconvenience (!!!)
Which worked on the entire new order I placed, so I got a BBX, and all the available hop-ups for just the price of the buggy. A bit disappointed I didn't really need anything else, being able to pile a bunch of stuff on at that discount would have been swell.

2 days later, the buggy shipped. Hop-ups still pending shipping, but hey I won't complain.

I went with my tried-and-true splatter paint scheme that's been on my racing buggy for years and years. Kinda wish I would have spent the extra ~$30 to get some combination of colors that would have matched the stripe decals. It doesn't look quite as good as I had imagined. The business of the box-art decal set really carry the look, in my opinion. Oh well, I'll just hope the body set is eventually available separately for a second go-around. I will probably end up cutting some additional decals for this on my vinyl cutter. For now, just going to go have some fun!

Running the Tamiya 10.5T motor on a Hobbywing Justock ESC (which is small, but still doesn't fit under the shroud). Stock pinion installed, but I took my whole caddy with me, going to have to do some fiddling today at the park. I had a Spektrum SPMS602 servo sitting around, and that fits (just barely) with the addition of the little spacers. It's heinously slow and loud compared to what I'm used to, going to have to find a nicer servo for this it's going to drive me nuts!

Just ordered an SPT4412LV short servo for the BBX.

I've never used one of these before but optimism is high based on reviews posted here and elsewhere on the web.

Still haven't settled on a motor/ESC combo - or paint colors.

I'm thinking about painting the cage to make it appear a little less like molded plastic.  Maybe a darker metallic gray but I should select the body color first.  So far, I've seen various shades of blue, yellow, lime green and even purple and all of them work well on this buggy.
