I bought myself a Type S a few days ago, I've been contemplating one for literally a year or so and when someone put up a Appliance Electronics for a cheap XV, I also saw the Type S for £123 I managed to talk myself into it.

As it doesn't come with a speed controller like the Lunchbox and Terra Scorcher I've built before, I've ordered a Quicrun 1060 to go with the Torque Tuned in the kit. The only upgrades I have bought are the alu propshaft and cups, plus a Yeah Racing Aluminium Ball Bearing Steering Set, which I'm hoping will fit. It's the bridge and two pivot arms, but if I don't use it, it's not the end of the world.

I saw this article on the RC Racer about him/her building and racing a Type S, and their mods where minimal although I suspect that was because of the class they were racing in. I'll be using a NiMH battery to power it.

I know a fair few people on here have had a Type S before. Is there any other worthwhile modification I could or should do? I realise that the suspension doesn't include anti roll bars, and I've heard that TT-02 need to be run with stiff springs at the front and soft at the rear, but I'm uncertain if the latter it only for the standard kit and not the Type-S.

It's going to have a Celica body despite me only going to run it on tarmac, so I've bought some of these for it as I entirely associate OZ Rally Racing wheels with virtually anything Group A, despite me knowing they often ran OZ wheels that looked suspiciously like Volk Rays TE37's. I'm sure they tyres will be rubbish but I'll have fun sliding it wherever I can. Anything I should also purchase whilst I've got my credit card out and before guilt sets in?

The boring answer is it depends how you're going to use the car, and what you want the car to do. Then research how to get there and what you need, without spending money on stuff you don't.

I'm in the middle of building my TT-02 (non-S) Audi Quattro. I want it to look and behave 'scale' when moving. I'll be adding weight to the car and soft damper settings, possibly without using oil. Not too many hop-ups, either, compared to what I see out there.

Once built, it'll probably take a lot of trail and error to get the car where I want it.

By the way, those wheels are really cool.

I have a TT-02 Type-S, and the only “modifications” I have are as follows:

a) YeahRacing Adjustable Motor Mount

b) aluminum center driveshaft with the Tamiya aluminum shaft “holders” (forget what they’re called)

c) “upgraded” speed gearing (hopup spur gear)

Car runs amazing. Utilizing a Hobbywing Quicrun 10BL120 ESC + Surpass Hobby Rocket V5R (13.5T) sensored motor.

That’s all really, hope this helped!image.thumb.jpg.7a18027ca4c96d8475a5a3a8798d45ad.jpg

Welcome to the Type S Owners' Club @EvilSpike! I am confident that you will enjoy the car immensely.

Your initial hop-ups should work a treat. The Yeah Racing steering fits perfectly - I have it fitted to my own Type S. Alloy propshaft and cups are also a good idea, especially if you plan on motor upgrades further down the line. To this end, the alloy spur gear holder and slotted alloy motor mount are also worthwhile as they significantly broaden your gearing options.

I haven't found the need for anti-roll bars on mine, and the stock springs work well with the Type S suspension which comes straight off the TB-03. The stock shocks also work quite well, but for ease of adjustment and a bit of bling, you might consider some threaded alloy ones from Yeah Racing, or even TRF if you have the budget.

As you have read the RC Racer article, you are no doubt aware of the carbon chassis stiffener available from Fibre Lyte. I have this fitted to mine, and can recommend it.

As you can see, I also have the carbon shock towers and battery strap installed, but I daresay they are primarily for aesthetic value. The kit parts are fine from a functional perspective.

Holy zombie thread alert Batman!

I'm not quite sure why, but it took over two years for me to finally get the box of assembled bits off the top of the bookshelf and build this thing. It was a fun build, but for some reason I wasn't as in to it as the Terra Scorcher and Lunchbox beforehand.

The build should have been quite simple, but I tried to add a few shims to reduce slop that didn't quite work, and although the ebay ad said the Yeah Racing steering set was for a TT02, it was in fact for a TT01 so didn't fit. I ended up buying a copy for the correct chassis that unfortunately also has slop in. After reading the RC Racer article which suggested using three hole pistons in the CVA's and the manual suggesting the one hole piston I split the difference and went for the two hole jobbies. There's a few carbon bits in the build, Tamiya cups and propshaft, and some aluminium Rays TE37 alike wheels with Tamiya tyres fitted.

I'm waiting for some M3 bolts and some grub screws to come through the post before fitting the Fibre Lyte chassis upper deck and tidying the electrics. I have found however when running the car around the driveway it understeers quite badly when on the power then turns in predictably on a trailing throttle, but can often snap into oversteer when getting back on the throttle after the apex. The springs feel far too heavy for the chassis, even with the smallest preload spacers fitted I have zero static sag, which I'm certain isn't right? It's only got the stock torque tuned motor in there so I'm not pushing silly amounts of power through the tyres.

Also I've found out that you shouldn't spent five minutes drifting it around the wooden floorboards of the kitchen with these OEM Tamiya tyres. Well, not unless you then want to subsequently spend half an hour on your knees with a rag, a bottle of brake cleaner and an unimpressed wife...
