Frankster 2033 Posted January 19, 2023 Hi all, I found this used RC toy and wanted to Tamiya it! A few options are being considered.: 1. Comical chassis GF-01 (4WD) 2. Comical chassis WR-02 (2WD) 3. Wild Willy chase with Lunchbox tires. 4. TA-02 with 3D printed chassis #1 and #2 are comical and wheelbase matches. #3 wheelbase works and is monsterized. Problem is with high center of gravity it will tip often and I am not sure I want to frequently to flip it back onto its wheels Target now is #4. A quick drift car with minimal flipping over. This will also give me a chance to learn to design and 3D print for the first time. Fingers crossed 🤞 Wheelbase 175mm Track width 200mm Length 320mm Width 230mm 10
Mad Ax 9313 Posted January 19, 2023 I think this will be great!
Busdriver 6209 Posted January 19, 2023 Love it. Can’t wait to see how it comes out. I love this kind of build!!!
Tamiyastef 1967 Posted January 21, 2023 Maybe you can hack the Grasshopper rear gearbox in or is that too high? Even better but pure blasphemy: get an old Golf chassis (58025) and hack that into the right dimensions?

I would be exiled from Tamiya Club for touching 58025 chassis for SBSP conversion 😵
Frankster 2033 Posted January 26, 2023 Back from lunar new year holidays and picked up an Open Calibra. Not interested in the body but more on the chassis for my next build.
Frankster 2033 Posted January 26, 2023 Just noticed Tamiya tire is 63mm in diameter. Stock SBSP is 73mm rear and 64mm front. If I was sticking to RWD, I could make the rear wheels larger in diameter for a dragster look…
Nikko85 3453 Posted January 26, 2023 Awesome. One other option you have is an MF01x. With no spacers the wheelbase would be 171 mm, which is probably close enough? Could you go for Tamiya racing truck tires (70 mm O/D) as another option. This thing will be great regardless. Can you and @GeeWings please have a race with his Mario-Kart? 1

I did consider the M class but wanted to match the existing track width at 200mm. Full size touring was as close to stock SBSP. M chassis would be too narrow. Mario Kart is awesome! I still play video game with my kids
Frankster 2033 Posted January 26, 2023 Panicked and thought the batt would not fit hard body. Good to go!

However I'm sure this will be fantastic! I am not familiar with this chassis but it looks nice. 46 minutes ago, Frankster said: Panicked and thought the batt would not fit hard chassis. Good to go! I am not familiar with this chassis but it looks nice. I was looking at Comical but batt is too high and will prob tip over. M chassis with TL01 arms is a new approach. Never heard of this hack before. Maybe next time as I am already down the rabbit hole with the TA02 chassis
GeeWings 2830 Posted January 27, 2023 Very cool! Love this. I’m a huge fan of custom builds. Can’t wait to see more!

Maybe next time as I am already down the rabbit hole with the TA02 chassis Comical chassis use same geometry arms as TL-01, but slightly longer, so you can use them on M-chassis, too. Or even TL-01B arms, but that might be too wide.
Frankster 2033 Posted January 28, 2023 Picked up min requirements: -bearings -drift dish wheels to make the car look stock -drift tires -alum motor mount (weak point) I will upgrade motor at a later point, let’s get this started first Rear ball diff completed Rear stock suspension assembly completed It is a brand new kit but an old design. I am surprised the amount of play in the suspension joints
Frankster 2033 Posted January 28, 2023 Picked up a US$4.25 digital caliber… 🤔 should be good enough for what I need to start 3D printing
Frankster 2033 Posted January 28, 2023 (edited) Front gearbox and suspension completed. Notice the center drive shafts are not aligned in both x and y axis Edited January 28, 2023 by Frankster Spelling
Frankster 2033 Posted January 28, 2023 Looks like everything fits within 175mm wheelbase. Will need to hack steering but servo will sit over battery.
Frankster 2033 Posted January 28, 2023 I was not sure if the wheels would hit the battery. Installed new dish wheels (to be painted later) and drift tires. The wheels clear when at full lock. Next I need to review existing body structure. TA02 bumper will need to go or get cut down in size
Frankster 2033 Posted January 29, 2023 Started 3d modeling the chassis

Frankster 2033 Posted February 4, 2023 Printed chassis arrived. Overall sturdy for what I need. This new 2nd printed chassis fixed mounting hole issues from my first attempt. This one also has 2 problems. I did not chamfer the rear part and the chassis does not fit with the rear gearbox I will try filing this down to make it fit. second I did not measure the front gearbox holes properly. Overall I will file the rear part of the chassis and drill larger holes in the front to confirm if there are any other issues. Afterwards I will reprint the bottom chassis again
Frankster 2033 Posted February 4, 2023 Installed and modified the chassis to for north gear boxes Not problems popping up from my print. Cut / remove additional surplus attachment point to fit battery Gap in attachment points Need to more space between top deck and bottom deck for battery and servo shift servo back need a shorter turnbuckle Overall working well Still need to reprint top and bottom chassis pieces
