Tamiya MB-01 Chassis

So its been a couple of days cooling off my head from my unimpressive MB01 (#2) with the FWD setup.

I put a fresh Futaba receiver on it this morning and within like a minute crashed into the barrier (test drove with just the chassis) as my head was calibrated to my capable m-chassis in addition to being brain dead today from the covid vaccination side effect.

I decided I hate this car now. :D  I'm pulling all electronics off and tossing it in my parts bin so that my MX5 has spare parts in the future.   I'm going to concentrate on my M06 next.

The biggest part I hate about this car is the huge turn radius.

What a shame to bench this car already.

I’m with you, Williy.

originally I just wanted to buy the a Abarth body, but then the opportunity arose that I could start M chassis class racing at our club, so to meet the minimum drivers I purchased the kit so that my son could race with us

Sunday I decided that the MB01 is not going to become a chassis that I can have my son race with us.

It’s too entry level, not designed to be competitive. The lowest FDR is 5.83 where as M07 is 4.8. My old M06 with the 3 racing gears can get as low as 4.3

I tried to come up with mods on MB01 bring it down but it’s not worth the effort. So I figured I’d go 3 racing route for him. I ordered him Sakura MG evo for him.

How is 3 racing high speed gear? Ive seen it one time from a build thread and thinking of using it on m05 build

@Tamiyastef uses it I think and made very positive comments. Which motor are you going for in the M-05 though?

I agree 100%.  Tamiya's concept of these front/rear enterchangable chassis is great, but the MB01 was poorly executed.   I'm happy I got the 1000 TCR body and the wheels though.   :D    When I drove my M03 yesterday, I was like "now that is what I'm talking about!"

I am planning to use either gt tuned or lightly tuned motor.

I don't know these but like all open end bell motors from Tamiya they have strong magnets and will have a massive amount of drag when you lift the throttle, like drag brake that you can't turn off. So make sure this is what you want!

One of the M05s in the builds section has a set of 3racing gears.

A big thing to keep in mind is that while it does allow you to fit a 24t pinion, doing so will require you to split the chassis as a 24t pinion won't physically fit through the pinion hole.

Hello everybody,

this is my first post. :-) I've been a silent reader for a while and I enjoy your discussions. Now that a first MB01 has been put in the corner I felt the need to intervene: I love my MB01, it is a little RWD rocket on wheels!

I chose the NSU TT body and built the chassis in the long version accordingly. I've always wanted to have a NSU Prinz. It reminds me of my childhood when my aunt drove one of these. When the MB01 came out, the moment had arrived. :-)
About the Chassis: The assembly was very easy, as well as it is very easy to work on (comparable to my good old DT02). Only issue during the first run: Even small bumps in the floor, such as stones of 5mm in diameter, caused the lower arms to detach. Solution: Soft springs and metal suspension balls.

Body: 51594 NSU TT, PS-55 Flat clear + TS-32 Haze grey + PS-5 Black + PS-19 Camel yellow
Chassis Hop-Up's: Ball bearings, CVA Super mini, Low friction suspension balls (lower arms only), shims on the lower arms, TT01 Spur gear 58T and 31T pinion.
ESC: TBLE-04S with a non-branded 10.5t sensored motor
I built the car as RWD and it drives surprisingly well!

Good point.. though i remember seeing lightly tuned motor as an hop up option for m chassis… i will try that and see how it goes.

Saw that and yeah that doesnt seem super convenient. I will maybe try it if i find one come across for cheap (or as an add on to save shipping)

You should keep an eye out for an M07, they'll accept bigger pinions and they more than likely drive better than an M05.

I will say from experience that I liked my Lightly Tuned motor, it's basically a fancy looking Torque Tune but re-buildable.

This weekend I’m going to prep the MB01 and place it for sale on RCTech.

I use them om my M-05 and they are just as good and durable as the stock Tamiya ones. I it used only with a stock silver can but on 3s Lipo...

Stock is 37t spur IIRC and in the set from 3racing you get a 35t and 33t one. Only on the 33t spur the biggest possible pinion is the 24t one. All other options fit through the hole in the motor mount.

I like them so much I mounted them from the start in my M-08.

Haha I saw it on the box too :) Keep us posted on how you like it then. On a front wheel drive it won't be as annoying as on a RWD car. But as usual it all depends on how much grip you have (track and tires). Here in AZ dealing with dusty surfaces most of the time I had to turn dragging brake off completely on my M-05 else I would literally see the the front wheels come loose mid-corner when I lift the throttle and reattach when I add throttle again. It was really obvious. For the same reason I stopped using my Super Stock on my RWD Porsche. I find the good old Sport Tuned gives me good performance without the annoying 'drag brake' issue.

The M chassis don’t do well with high torque motors. Those open bell RZ type motors from Tamiya have too much torque. If your using brushless make sure the rotor is not high torque

Do you already have an M-05? If I had started from scratch today I now know I would have started with an M-07 Concept. By the time you have got shocks, bearings, alu steering and the parts you need to sort the heat you are past the cost of an M-07 Concept,  a body and capable tyres (the latter is also necessary for the M-05). Even though I love my M-05; after I got the M-08 it is crystal clear how much higher end this (and the M-07) is. Parts drying up for the M-05 is also not good over time.

The better plastic alone is worth it, no hop-up known to man will fix the M05s weird, brittle PC-ABS plastics.

Except for an M07.

HeheB). You are perfectly right. I have tapped some of the screwholes on my M-08 and the feeling doing this is something other than when you do the same in the usual ABS plastics.

And do not forget the usable pinion you get with the higher end M-Chassis ;)

That much play in parts is unacceptable.

Tamiya engineers need some proper lessons in ISO fits.

Also some classes in tolerance stacking.

It is weird - they have the same assembly setup on the TT-02 and they don't pop, or at least I don't see many complaints about it. :)   The plastic ball has a slit so it can compress to pop/snap into the arm, and then the upright should fit nearly exactly into there and not allow the ball to compress in order to pop/snap back out. It could even be a tight fit or expand it. Looking at the two videos, it kinda looks like the ball isn't quite round, so maybe a manufacturing issue with the mold?  Might just be a trick of the light/camera though.

I've only had the suspension ball pop once on a TT02, and that was after taking a big rock while off-roading. I think that its a molding issue as most of these entry level kits have loose tolerances.

You must live in phx, tucson has no racing other than drifting and large scale oval track.

Speaking of taps, a year ago I picked up the Tamiya thread forming tap.. I kick myself for not buying it sooner.  I use it all the time now and it makes such a difference

Those number roundels are somewhat Herbie-like...

Does look good. Still prefer the all-red variant though.
