The Mystery F103

Recommended Posts

HI, I recently bought a used F103 at eBay. The seller has no idea about what he was selling, so I can't get any answers from him.. So maybe you guys can help me out..

This is the chassis. The body was a very weird Audi R8R Le Mans body, not released by Tamiya, and presumably by Carson or Carisma.

these pieces were also included in a bag

three springs for the front suspension, the damper mount, the antenna holder and a weird spur with a much smaller pitch.

These are the rear wheels, 37mm wide and 60mm diameter. The rims are the classic 5 spoke ones both rears and fronts.

Don't seem to be cut by the owner from the classic 45mm to 37mm, as both keep the semigloss finish at the sides to glue the good year stickers , which in this case are only at the rears and are yellow ?¿

Even more weird is that front left tire is conical !!

With all this I am so confused about which chassis this could be originally..

My best guess is that it was an F103RS

Most parts are the same, but there are some questions:

  • Which rear wheels are these?? The Group C ones have more diameter and don't fit this rim.. Could it be a Le Mans Toyota GT-ONE or similar? Did these cars have those 37mm wide rears?
  • Why one of the front wheels is conical? Is this a way to achieve some sort of caster?
  • Why the damper mount was changed to this central pillar thing? Is there any advantage with this system? The damper angle is totally different..  more extreme.
  • How come did it include an antenna holder? Maybe this is a proof it was a sport prototype like the GT-ONE?
  • Is this an F103RS, or not?

Maybe this is just a frankenstein F103 built with all sorts of parts?

Thanks!

Conical tyre probably has occurred from running it with a poor tracking setup, can't help with any other questions sorry

Just one wheel? It feels like it's been done on purpose but maybe!

Tamiya did release the 58247 Audi F103LM kit.  But it came with rubber tires and silver wheels alu body posts and I believe a sport tuned motor.

Maybe yours just has a Audi body kit on it.

Looks like the Toyota GT one front bumper but the posts aren't right. And the tyres should be rubber not foam.

Looks like a pretty standard early F103 chassis with sponge tyres. The conical aspect seems likely to be something that’s become misshapen over time, perhaps how it was stored. The damper arrangement on the chassis is standard, but the kits also provided the alternative mount to ensure there was space for a Tamiya CRP unit - see pic. The car would have started as a F1 variant I think, but has been converted to take a Le Mans type body, so has been fitted with a LM style front bumper with body mounts (these are not Tamiya versions of these parts). That’s why you also have the antenna holder part, which is no longer fitted for whatever reason (this being a standard part for the LM variant, like the 58230). The rear body mount posts are also likely non-Tamiya parts from the looks of it. Overall the standard F103 chassis looks to have had only minor alterations to enable a switch from F1 body to Le Mans body.

…and the R8R had a different chassis plate - it had a wider one, same as the carbon version on the 58258 F103LM-TRF, only the Toyota and Porsche GT1’s came with the narrower standard F103 chassis plate, and like the R8R, all the LM cars came with rubber tyres and correct, rather than generic wheel designs, to accurately reflect the real 1:1  cars.

Thank you guys for the answers, really helpful. Makes sense..

But I mistook about the body it was an Audi R8C not R8R.

Yes, not a Tamiya body, so maybe it was sold as a set together with the front bumper and body mounts, and the owner decided also to add the Tamiya antenna mount.
