Bibbo, KoenC and I are always debating whether onroad cars are cooler than offroad cars. Both Koen and I prefer the onroad cars, but Bib likes the offroaders more [8)].

We thought that perhaps you like to collect the stuff that you had when you were a kid, and this could make sense, as I had a Lambo Countach, Ferrari T3, Sand Rover, Audi Quattro and Porsche 956. This means I had 60% onroad cars compared to 40% offroaders.

I remember however how I was always drooling over the Hilux picture in the catalogues.

So, my question to you is: do you prefer offroaders or onroaders, and why?

I'm an off roader through and through. I suppose as a kid I was always impressed with cars that jumped or had over sized wheels, so it was the natural choice.

It was also driven by the fact that I wanted a car I could drive any where, as opposed to very flat surfaces. I missed the whole racing scene completely somehow - never even knew another kid with a Tamiya!

Now days when I'm out playing with my cars in the park I still get a kick out of people stopping and watching as I leap my terra crusher off huge jumps. Don't think I'd get quite the same buzz (or crowd of on lookers) if I were just driving my onroad car around in circles somewhere.

Never entered a race myself, I'm a devoted un tarmacked carpark thrasher, off road all the way. Though I do see the appeal of the on roaders, especially the hoped up carbon fibre 4wd veriety, thier just so cool looking. Think I'd like to diplay one body off stylee, hope I don't upset too many people with that little bomb shell[:I]

I always raced on road but i now i preffer off road as you can mess about anywhere with your buggy but a touring car slammed to the deck can only see the road infront of your house or the local carpet racing track. (Plus i feel off road look cool [8D] )

hi

Mr Netsmith sounds alot like me. I never saw anyone with a Tamiya when i was growing up (infact i still haven't, closest i got is a old friend who had a Grasshopper in bits in his loft) so i what i liked was what i saw in my 1988 and '92 catalogues. And the cars that really caught my eye where the off-roaders like the Egress, Top Force and Hotshot 2. Onroad cars where of no use to me as i had nowhere to drive them (even if i could afford them), and the huge suspension, wheels and wings on the offroaders were far more exciting. I used to imagine all the fun i could have with a car that looked like it could go anywhere, not just round a car park.

I'm torn.....

First 2 cars were Sand Scorcher and Holiday Buggy, and unlike Chris I had 2 friends who also had racing buggies and we ran them everywhere!!!

But I very quickly got into racing, and the first 3 classes I ran were 1/12th scale stockcars (UK guys will know what I mean) then 1/12th circiut then 1/10th buggies... so I really got into on road before off road took off... So, now-a-days I still race on road (04 PRO and EVO3) and off road too ( No Tamiya here, so XXX Losi)

I love the looks of the on roaders especially the F1's, but love the go anywhere attitude of the off roaders...

I had both on road and off road cars back in the day. I mainly used the off road ones as we lived out a ways from town and all around my house was dirt. when I wanted to run my Porsche 956 I had to go into town to either run it on the tennis courts or in the safeway parking lot. Now since I live in the city, I have more on road cars. I still think the off road cars are more versatile.

For my collection I have no preference between on or off-road because I think there are some very nice cars in both categories.

At the other site to drive and bash around I prefer off-roads (including the TB01 rally). This for the simple fact that if I want to drive my off-road I can drive it in my garden. At the other hand if I would like to drive an on-road I'd have to go to a parking lot or something like that.

My first contact with Tamiya when I was kid was an old 84 catalogue and I must say the off roads took almost all my attention, as even my toyscars till then could drive on even surfaces (unfortunately only there and very slowly [;)]) but the pics of SRBs and 3 speeds running through sand, mud and water made me drool and still do [:I][;)][:P] Maybe I still stayed childish but driving in mud, snow or sand is much more fun for me, with the jumps, tires throwing sand many meters in the back, higher drift angles, "working" of suspension thats why I also preffer watching WRC to F1. Just watch the old SRB videos, running down the sand dunes and you will undersetand what I mean, especially compared to the old Tamiya on road videos...

I done my first TB01 in taking jumps in the warehouse at work.

Nice hot motor, decent run up, big ramp, LOW BENCH[:(]

I do find off road more fun though, especially since the folks live near a dirty great beach!

off road for sure! As a kid I was facinated by the fact that I could take the car outside and go thru gravel and dirt!

The fact that off road cars could be used anywhere makes it more friendly to entry level enthusiasts I guess, and if you're out alone running, the terrain itself can be a challenge, to find new trails to conquer or to simply just catch some air. I can imagine that in order to get the max rush from on road driving, this is met during competition with others, (which Chris sadly didn't experience as a kid[?])

I've never actually really run a real on road Tamiya car when I come to think of it [:(], but hey, I can imagine the thrill of actually racing these babies on a nice track (I do have my PS2 and there's nothing cooler than beating your buds in a F1 race - then on the flipside, I do like to steal a Hummer in GTA and just go for a rampage tour down town[;)] - well, in Vice City, I have to settle with an old Broco or similar[;)]).

Still it's all about accessibility as I see it...

I had a couple of toy RC cars in the 70's. One turned left only with a single-button transmitter. The second one I got was SUPPOSED to turn left and right but right didn't work. I finally got an RC van that had proportianal steering, with fwd and rev. But it was sloooooooow and it ate batteries. Basically it was another toy. When I finally got a job and money (1981), I bought a Rough Rider. It was so much more powerful than anything I had owned up to that point by leaps and bounds. And, the fact that I could drive it over anything besides a kitchem floor was an experience unlike any other. I'll never forget pushing the throttle stick forward for the first time. Sadly, I no longer have my original Rough Rider. Pictures and a movie (8mm film!) are all that remain. Happily, Ebay has given me a second chance. Anyway, in conclusion, I think I prefer off road!

Have you ever seen a buggy race indoors on carpet? What a wicked combo. I like onroad better. I haven't done much off-roading but I break my cars without jumps.[:o)]

Off road for me. I cut a new racing track layout in the grass just about every time I cut the back yard grass. My son and I then race our Blitzer Beetles. It's a blast [:D] I have to build a jump into the track, somehow.

I have always loved off-road driving better, mainly watching the way my Avante eats up the undulations - that and the cloud of dust behind the car.

The only problem is, the BMX track I used to use has been bulldozered, and I can't find anywhere decent to run off road that is not too rough (If anyone knows places in the Hampshire/Sussex/Surrey border area please let me know)

Due to this, I now drive mainly on road - my 306 maxi makes the Avante look very pedestrian now though!

I started racing On road in the late seventies, progressing to Off Road in 79/80. I did not stop racing until just over a year ago.....I even still have a go.....thinking about making a "comeback"!![:0]

I am really torn as well on this one. Having had just about all of my success with Off Road racing - It used to be my favourite. Unfortunately , for reasoins the same world over, Off Road has died / Dying - so I turned to racing On Road.....I like the look of the Sedans - and especially enjoy running 1/12th scales (I am showing my age there !)[;)].......

I guess I would have to say that Off Road wins for me by a small margin. Simply because I have a real "drift" style to my driving, both in On Road and Off Road. Off Road really makes this style of driving more fun though.

As I am just bashing around and having fun at the moment, I am running my off roads like the Mad Force and Wild Willy, Celica GRB etc etc. They are more fun and versatile.

When I get the urge to practice some driving skills - I get out my Mini Z and set a course up in the garage and practice.....

Off Road is more fun - and also more versatile......for me anyway.
