Is it considered unpopular to like the ORV chassis?

Yea it has its issues, its sloppy, and it handles like crap (but better than a Hornet), but its an old design, comes with metal parts, and more importantly its easy to work on.

For just bashing about I cannot stress how important that last point is. Yes RCs break and have issues, you fix them.

The ORV is the best Tamiya chassis period.  There.  I said it.

All things considered I was surprised at how quick mine was with the speed gearing, with just a silver can its about as fast as my TT chassis...though it handles very different.

I had a frog as a first car, and I grew to hate that car so much, so not really......

Although, a pre-teen ,skint me, just kept saving up to buy outdrives, when the gears where shot, from me racing it, ir more likely,  rev- for on the msc, to try and get a wheelie with a Parma K stock ....😬, never crossed my mind, to modify... Keep threatening to get a rere and revisit...

Did find some remnants in my folks loft the other week, not sure if the full cars there..

Don't, the dogbones will drive (pun not intended) you nuts. Of course Tamiya has an expensive hopup to fix that problem.

Aye, even without that issue, MIP diff etc massively bump the finished car price up (as i would be going brushless, brushed is dead in my mind.....unpopular opinion?) ...

Not sure if that's unpopular or not to be honest, plenty of people have moved away from brushed.

The only reason why I stick either brushed myself is because I'm a cheapskate. And I don't have much space for a fast RC.

Not necessary. You know me and had actually met me. I go both ways, brushed and brushless. NiMHs and lipos. Don't know where some people get the I am a lipo and/or brushless hater idea from. 🤷

Yep, always good to meet a fellow member! 👍

I've only 2 cars with brushed now. A Bullhead (860 / 15t firebolts), as to run brushless is expensive,  and a Novafox (1060/15t firebolt) mainly as you need to completely strip the car, to get new elecs in ( although, 15t /3s @41mph goes quite well...)

Dunno, from what I've read, it's data that you've posted, lipo are 'better' (constant voltage discharge over the run cycle, higher current discharge capable, sustained higher voltage through the run cycle ,lighter and smaller), but, need more , cuddles. Nimh work, but aren't without risks.

Mine with standard gearing and an old 17t Trinity motor really moves. Still one of my top 3 fastest cars after all these years :D (only recently de-crowned by my DT02)

Have you had any problems with the novafox gearbox as ive had problems with mine. Its only running with the stock motor.

No issues at all (yet, by the sounds of it....😳), other than full bearings (came with bearings away if i remember right, just not front wheel?) and a steel (sure it was a 15t *i say its a 17t in the blurb on the vid**) pinion, it's a stock gearbox.

I've raced it a few times in the vintage class at a local club (before I got the rere Ultima..), and a few 3s runs, so not loads of use, but never babied.

❤️ The Fox. For me that's iconic Tamiya. If I was a rere guy it'd be very high on my list. Roughly contemporary with the Falcon I had as a kid but just quite simply miles better. And yours looks to drive beautifully. Looks quick - that the 3S in the vid?

I love the front mono shock look, not the best for being an actual shock absorber,  but....🤷‍♂️

Like the rere, as I can do what I want with them, without guilt, knowing I can still get spares cheaply and easily (well, could....) which is how most of us ran them bitd, no care for resale or preservation,  just enjoying RC.

Yeah, that's on 3s lipo, I think that's the last time I ran it on 3s though,  as I could smell the motor ,as it goes past 👃🔥....

Maybe it just needs a bit more motor 😉

All of this talk of motors reminds me, dunno if it's unpopular or not but I quite like chassis that only take 4 screws at most to remove the motor.

Yet another point to the ORV, just two screws and the motors out.

I've only off road , but scratching my head trying to think of a tamiya, that's MORE than 4 screws to remove the motor? 🤔

I will add to that, pinions that need taking out before removing the motor. (Well, I sometimes have pinions nearly as big as the motor so my fault I guess).

Tamiya TT-01E: 10 Screws to remove the upper brace, four to remove the cover iirc, two for the motor. Had to do this repeatedly due to various challenges meshing the pinion in its confined area.

Tamiya TT-02: Four for the cover, two for the motor mount, and two for the motor.

Keep in mind that I don't use an electric screwdriver on my RCs, all by hand.

Here is another unpopular opinion.

I personally feel the mini 4x4 is just a dumb idea.

I've never got it myself, its like slot cars but with less driver input. Its a huge money maker for Tamiya though.

You know, the more that I drive on-road cars on on a flat street, the less value I find in having a pretty body shell.

My NSU has its share of scuffs and a pretty bad crack on the front spoiler, and on my TT-02 the once mint shell has its series of scuffs and scratches from a few rollovers.

A well done shell looks terrific, but whenever I make mine I don't mind taking a few shortcuts knowing that they're going to get beaten up.

Weirdly the shell that has held up the best isn't even my touring car shells, but the baja bug body on my Frog.
