I like your idea @alvinlwh.

Sounds more achievable than my lottery win dream of a farm or at least a house with a barn I could use as a workshop / indoor track and a small wooded area for crawling. Then open it up to a local club for use.

More realistic is a new garage at this property. I'd really like to do it this year (so that will mean if it happens, it will actually be 2024, I've been talking about doing this since about 2015) and agreed with Mrs BC it will be a new pre-fab rather than a wooden structure.

She's hoping for a greenhouse tacked on the end. I'm hoping for a workbench inside.

I love to be coming home from a day out and the wife saying “why don’t you call into the model shop because we’re passing and buy yourself a model car you’ve always wanted”………”oh and here’s the money”

anyway that ain’t never going to happen!
But I must admit my mojo for competitive racing has dwindled some what over the years but the classic rc racing using older rc buggies does tend to appeal to me very much so but as it’s never organised anywhere near where I live I don’t think that’s never going to happen aswell:rolleyes:

As i live in the city with 3 daughters (1moved out) and truly no space at all for this Hobby i would just love to get the badword out for a weekend now and then and talk to like minded about this hobby, grab a beer also not just sit on a forum in other words, only that would be s great start to shake some «My litle Pony» and Girl issues off but i do not see  even that will happen as i do not have the Energy left to even check it it exist such a community where i live.

Would help if got one off my daughters hooked on this hobby, stil not very succseful there. That was my original plan when picking this hobby up again.

Oh well atleast during my 50’s one off my daughters room will become a Mancave, then lets see which way this hobby takes me, when i can use some serious time with it. While waiting i will envy you guys and admire you work

Ps: Love my Girls but For God Sake i need you Guys for a brake now and then

Just would love to get back on track for the first time in around 35 years. Just for a go. Preferably old school grass!

Getting any children interested in a creative hobby has got to be a win :) The look of joy on your daughters face in your photos/videos is worth it. Maybe she will in turn inspire your son :)

Save the pennies, get a basher and go for it. We all have to have a bit of fun. Oh and dont forget a photo or 2 for TC :)

Ooh scary. Maybe buy a body designated the "basher" body so there is no heartbreak the first time you roll?

this.

My 3 finished RC cars are all runners and I don't intend to ever have any shelf queens.

I just don't get any time to run them apart from a couple of minutes here and there on the drive. outside of work, morning, evenings and weekends its all about looking after the kids and at 2 and 3 years old they don't want to play RC yet.

Sadly, like many here it seems, I spend more time building buggies and trucks than I do running them.

I got semi-serious about the idea of racing again recently... but fatigue/kids/health have kinda killed the idea for now. At least I'm not alone.

I haven't given up completely... and certainly can't leave it another 30+ years.

As a warm up that requires less commitment for things like travelling to events you could have a go at the Racing By Post hosted here on TamiyaClub?

So I've been watching Vice Grip Garage's coverage of Power Tour over on Youtube this week, and it got me thinking about this thread again, and how we could do some kind of similar event for RCs.  As I pointed out before, most RC fans don't want to spend a week road tripping their 1:1 cars to chain up a number of different race tracks, and the whole "your race car must survive all the journeys as well as the racing" kind of doesn't make sense when the journey part is done inside a 1:1 car.

But something else started the wheels turning a few weeks back.  Someone posted up some footage of an Axial event which had a dirt track laid out for RC crawlers, and the winner was the one who got around it fastest.  There were different classes for different tyre sizes and rig types.  It looked like a lot of fun, although it was a formula that needed some work.  A local Facebook contact is looking at organising some friendly scale truck racing in the same vein.

But, while I was watching Derek completely fail to get to Power Tour, I started thinking about a multi-discipline competition, where you enter one car but have to compete for scores in various different events, with the total scores taken to find the overall winner.

Crawlers immediately felt like the perfect vehicle class since they can do other stuff without too much modification.  And that got me thinking about possible stages:

Technical Crawl - A technical crawler stage, with marked gates and difficult climbs.  Penalties for rolling, touching a gate or using a winch.  No scores for finishing fastest, but perhaps a penalty for exceeding a certain time (to encourage people not to spend all day on the stage).

Timed Crawl - An easier, shorter crawl, this time against the clock - fastest time wins.  Time penalties for hitting or missing gates, rolling or winching.

Sprint Stage - Less a crawl, more a scramble over mixed terrain - fastest time wins.

Circuit Race - 6 trucks line up on the start line and race (either timed or total number of laps).

Rally - setting off at timed intervals, competitors must follow a stage map to collect stamps at various points around the venue.  I'm thinking a real big venue would work here (like at the Scaler Nationals) to reduce the chance of people following each other.  Stamps don't have to be gathered in any particular order, to encourage trailblazing and mapreading.

Drag Race - a scale 8th mile, maybe.  Exactly what it sounds like.

Tug of War - Exactly what it sounds like.  Pull your opponent over the line to win.

There's probably scope for various other things in here, too - feel free to suggest others!  And exactly how trucks are drawn against each other for the contest stages would have to be thought about too - it could be lucky dip, or could be done based on current standings, or whatever.

I was also thinking about the rules.  Obviously, you must run the same truck for every event - this forces competitors to think about their builds, and whether they want to compromise one stage to get a better truck in another, or build an all-rounder and try to win on aggregate.  Competitors may be allowed to change diff and gear ratios between stages - this would allow those who don't have 2-speed transmissions or lockable diffs to compete against TRXs and the like.  However, I think a truck would have to run the same motor and steering servo in all stages, to avoid people throwing in fast motors for the races and torque monsters for the crawls and tugs.  To allow for breakages, each competitor could hand over a spare motor, ESC and servo to the scrutineer at the start of the event (before any lottos are drawn for stage order), and can only get them back if the part breaks during the competition.

Competitors must run the same tyres all day.

Trucks must be the same weight and same F:R balance all day - to avoid people ballasting for the tug and lightening for the racing, or moving weight from the wheels into the chassis to balance for different stages.

Springs and ride height can be adjusted between stages.

I think something like this run over a couple of days would be epic fun.  I don't know how many other people would agree with that!

Any other crazy ideas out there?  :D

Many great ideas, but At present time im trying to attend “Racing by post - Round” linked to above but struggling finding a proper tarmac spot where i wont be bothered to much (would be much easier in the small town i was born). As i live in Norway where RC interest seem to be extremely low (especially for Tamiya) so this kind off “happening” online is probably the only RC related event i can attend.

I think if i do get the finger out off my *** and attend it will be a real eye opener for me and this hobby as i enjoy the driving part more and more

edit: also as mentioned before on this forum i am in the same boat as many others here, small kids that i cant get interested, that makes it even harder to find a spot off time for me to enjoy the hobby

Mud bogging. Just be the fastest to make it all the way through or get most distance in measured from the starting line. Going in reverse not allowed.

@Mad Ax I ran my GMade GS02F in box spec full crawler mode at the RC Kicks meet last weekend (indoor carpet with small jumps). Was out with Lunchboxes etc which ran rings round it. It's a two speed, so was just slow rather than embarrassing. More of an issue was the 100% drag brake which meant I nose-dived and grip-rolled whenever I got off the throttle or steered too aggressively.

Was still a bunch of fun using it how it's not meant to be used. The biggest quirks could have been dialled out with electronics (/care) and shock adjustments. I thoroughly approve of such an event.

Of course I'm dreaming of opening an RC venture with a nice off-road dirt track to organise something similar to the Tamico Offroad-Cup, next to a nice indoor place where an easy changeable on road track can be laid out. Preferably combined with a café/basic rc shop/snackbar thing. Get some teambuilding events going. Provide building/repair service for members. (as I love to build) All this without having any financial worries about this enterprise being self-sufficient or even profitable. I can dream, can't I?

Honestly just a group of around 8 to 10 like minded guys/girls, preferably already owning similar cars like I do, getting together on a weekly basis for a couple of hours in the weekend or on an evening to lay out a track on an empty car park and having a bash/friendly race. Similar to postal racing except non-postal. I would really really like that. The "driving alone" is boring me out lately.

I like this a lot. I’m in the process of building the very car. A fast Axial SCX10 ii deadbolt?

I'd like to organise a local equivalent of something I saw on YouTube: RC Overlanding.

In essence, it was simply a group of people going on a shortish walk in the countryside with their RC scale offroad rigs, stopping halfway for a picnic and photos (for which they set up little naturalistic camping dioramas with their rigs and accessories) then packing up and returning to their point of origin, either via the same route or a different one.

It all seemed quite inclusive, with the routes chosen to allow people of all levels of fitness to take part. Some were even wheelchair accessible. And it wasn't hugely demanding on the vehicles either - even stock CC-01s could manage, with perhaps an occasional tow from a friend.

All in all it looked like a nice relaxed outing with like-minded folk, with some great photo opportunities thrown in.

That would be cool. There are some local groups around me… but only for very capable trail/crawlers only.

Personally cc-01/02 like cars are perfect for me between some trail run fun without going too slow or fast. (That is why i sold trx4 and got cc-02).

That's pretty much what I do on my trail walks, minus the picnic and dioramas, and using my old Traxxas Sledgehammer as a trail rig. There are a ton of rustic woodland trails around here, so I take the truck when my wife and I go hiking out there. It's a nice relaxing outing every single time, and I've been thinking about trying to organize some kind of little meetup at one of the trails at some point for just this type of thing...

... for people like me and Sogogi who don't have competition-level crawlers for the local groups, but we still like getting out and driving on the trails :)

I'd like to travel to the US with my 1/8 buggies and attend a number of events that they have over there, like DNC, Psycho Nitro Blast, Silverstate etc
