I have built/ re bodied several road cars recently which is great but I don’t get quite the buzz that I get from hooning around in an off road pickup. I’m going to convert by XV01 back into a trophy truck so need to find a body for that, but I am completely out of ideas for a new build, at least Tamiya ones. I may get the new M chassis when it comes out to put my escort rally shell on but that’s about it. So the only other plan is to cross to the dark side and look at the Traxxas Ford Raptor (RTR), or the Slash 2wd builders kit. The other option would be the Kyosho Outlaw Rampage (part built). So putting aside the evils of Big Mr T for the moment does anybody have any thoughts about a) the choice of new kit and b) what bodies are available to create a TA02 trophy truck clone. ( I have a slightly battered Chevy S10/Asterion body that I can use)

It’s not just me then?!

From what I’ve read the Outlaw is a cracking truck for just ripping around with. Not sure how it holds up over time but definitely looks good, if I ever get rid of my ECX Torment I think I’d replace it with an Outlaw.

The slash might be more stable but I‘ve always found the super wide SCT to look plain odd. They can be good fun though!

I think Team Blue Groove do the Tamiya F150, that would fit the TA02.

+1 to rampage since it is structured like a real trophy truck. Though I haven’t seen one in person.

Losi has Baja ray which is like rampage.. but comes with radio and all that.

All of those are quite a lot bigger than the Tamiya trucks, just so you know. The Slash is humongous next to actual 1/10 scale vehicles (it's more like 1/8) and the Kyosho truck isn't far behind, but it is narrower. Just something to be aware of if that matters to you.

I've been tempted by the Kyosho myself, but I wish it was a proper kit, not 80% built.

If you want to stick with Tamiya...maybe the DT-02 Titan? Parts are starting to dry up from what I've seen, and it's not really a "proper" SCT despite being priced like one.

The Kyosho Outlaw looks neat, and it has a much more unique chassis that even uses a solid axle iirc (like a Hornet!). I've heard that one of the gears can be troublesome, but they're more "scale" than other SCTs.

The Slash is basically a Stampede in a muscle suit, a hodge podge of new and old parts. They're tough but the bodies are expensive and get damaged quite often.

If you get a Slash don't get the Raptor, it'll roll over more than the regular Slash (higher COG ) and scuff up your new shell, save the $50 difference for the LCG chassis since you'll likely end up going down that path.

Here's a side by side view, TT02 (not far off from a TA02), and a Slash. The Slash is about as wide as a buggy vs a touring car.

I hadn’t realised the slash was as big as that. ( edit: is there not a smaller Slash??) I have a Losi Raptor which is 4wd and that’s huge. I have to say the Kyosho is probably the most likely choice. I have a nice brushless set up I could use in it. The Raptor is pretty though!!!  I have read, and it’s been alluded to above that the rampage has some either pinion or gear issues but I’m it quite sure what? I have a month or so to think about it until finances have built back up!!!

I’ve had a Nissan Titan but it just didn’t work for me. It’s a great chassis but the body 🤔. I ended up shortening and narrowing the chassis and putting a remodelled Sand Rover body on it. Don’t really run it now as the body’s too precious!!!

There is the 1/16th scale Slash, I don't know much about it other than it's 4wd.

One other thing to note about the Slash is that the bodies wobble a bit, and they cause quite a racket.

I'd say go for the Kyosho if you want something closer to a Tamiya in terms of design, or go for the Traxxas if you want a maintenance-free basher.

1/16 has a wheelbase of 225 mm and track width of around 185 mm.

So its much smaller although probably closer to a 1/10 tamiya than the full size one.

Rampage, raptor or slash? Have you looked at the slaughterer, violator or traxxas genocide?

Rampage looks awesome.  Though I can't quite wrap my head around the MOA configuration on something that otherwise nails the overall look so bang on.

I'm probably overthinking things...

He should consider looking into the ECX TORMENT while he's at it.

I purchased an Outlaw Rampage Pro for my son couple of years back. It’s his favourite truck to take on trips to beach, snow.

It is great looking, much more scale than the Traxas, great quality and priced very fairly and very durable.

For snow, I put on some paddles on the rear and it was ripping up the ski slow with no bother as if was a 4WD.

Mind you if it was a 4WD, it would get my vote as the best truck.

Needless to say I highly recommend it.

This is the one climbing the ski slope. Motor is much tamer than prior video. This video is a brushed 15 turn motor. The above video is a HW Brushless with 4600kv, which I had to turn the EPA way down on

I am still working on it, but here is size comparison between rampage and tamiya titan. Rampage is much more hefty. Ran in the room a bit and love the suspension movement…

It's incredibly robust, too. I've landed mine on the roof, on either end, on one front wheel, collided with the kids play equipment in the garden - any Tamiya would have been out of action following those stunts! The tie rod connector for the steering arms does occasionally pop off, but I'd rather that happen than have broken parts to replace.

Dampers on the Pro version are lovely too, super smooth - they're every bit as good as Tamiya TRF items.

Not bad, how is it compared to a typical Tamiya build?

It is not a full build (70% built from the factory). But I am impressed. (First time building kyosho). Plastics look much nicer which i feel confident about (if tamiya had this much weight, I would be worried), hex hardwares, precut decals! And masks! and pre drilled holes for accessories!
Suspension movement is.. so good.

Except the known issue about spur gear (which i have replaced with losi one), I am very happy about it.

TLDR: Tamiya kits (I’ve built only entry level ones) felt like toys…

Cannot wait to run it outside today!
