Driving them all - 2023 resolution

Recommended Posts

I made a resolution to myself to get out of my rut and drive every trail truck I have at least once this year. I have 2 or three that are my "Go Tos" and the rest just sit. Shame!!

So to that end, I've been rotating around with various trail trucks each weekend. So far I've run:

Axial UMG
Traxxas  "Trail" Telluride
Element Sport IFS
Traxxas "Crawler" Telluride
Element Enduro
C-Maxx
Axial SCX10 III JLU

And many more to go...  I'll spare you all the non Tamiya's (Glad to post a pic of anything if anyone is interested) but anytime I get out anything Tamiya based, I'll update with some pics.

This weekend was sunny, mid 70's and I had sunday morning free...that means trail time!! Went into the Wayback machine and dug out 2 of my 4 CR01's for a little playtime. Ran into a lot of other guys out and about in the woods, not a single one of them even knew Tamiya made a crawler.. :)

First off, by OG CR01 build from 2009, heavily, heavily modified over the years and still running strong. Currently has Holmes/1080 power and a recently installed StealthX to give it a bit of OD.

Honestly, this is one of my best crawlers. It's a bit of a belly dragger, but nothing a blip of the throttle won't cure. I swapped over from the Losi Claws to the Carvers just for looks really. The tires are showing their age and aren't nearly as sticky as modern rubber (should have left the claws on, they are still excellent tires) but it got around just fine. Very stable, and climbs like a goat.

4WS is a must for these trucks since no one makes CVD's that I've ever found... with dogbones in the axles, steering is terrible. With all 4 wheels turning though, it's not bad at all. Plus, it's fun on the trail working that rear steering....I have yet to master it. :)

---------------------------------------

Put a battery through the Bug, than switched over to this piece. I picked this up from a friend when he left the hobby (still temporary I hope) and built it up OS style. Swapped to a lighter home cut chassis with standard shocks, but left it mostly intact driveline-wise.

Tires make a huge difference... the TSL's were up to the task today. The suspension is pretty soft, but raw grip got me mostly where I wanted to go. This one uses 4ws same as the bug and it's needed for sure. It has a shorter WB, so it was slightly more maneuverable.

This one is also kind of a belly dragger. The TVP chassis is somewhat tall, so it hangs down quite a bit. Just had to keep it in mind.

Something growled at me from this hole...took the pic and ran. I had the scene from Elf in mind where he tried to pet the raccoon. badword no, I'm out!

Only carnage of the day - took a tumble off a rock and landed right on the rear wheel. Popped out the servo! Guess I need 2 screws here... :) A few moments wrenching and I was back in action.

Nice pictures. It looks like a great spot for trailing and crawler.

You really got an impressive number of trail trucks. 👍

Neither of the CR-01s you have posted could be called stock..I'm curious - have either the Elements or the SCX10III been adapted much?

Definitely not stock. I don't think anything I have stays stock for long - I like to tinker. The other two are pretty modified as well, one with a lot of custom tube work. Pics to come!

The 10III doesn't have much - just some SSD brass at all 4 corners, front OD and a few body mods. Not overly impressed, it didn't do well crawling, the stock suspension is way too soft. Looks nice though.

IFS Element - mostly bolt ons and a Traxxas Sport body

Solid axle Enduro - again, lots of bolt ons but nothing wild. Doesn't need it really :

My Gatekeeper is running an Ecto body, I haven't run it yet. It's on the list for trail time!

Nice to see some more of your fleet and get your impressions on them. You've got some great trucks! Looking forward to seeing your next adventures.

I love the Rock Socker, I'd add one to the fleet if I see one come up for cheap. I think it's the best looking body they dropped on the CR01 chassis.

Almost had my portalled CC01 out for some testing yesterday. Loaded it on a trailer and decided to trailer it to all my test spots for some shakedown testing.

Pretty quickly I realized that the simplest rocks that I normally never give a second thought to were going to become serious obstacles. My TRX tow rig was digging in though, and by picking my lines very carefully, I managed to get to my first test rock.

Where I realized I brought the wrong radio for my CC01!  After some choice swear words, I reloaded the CC01 back on the trailer and headed back out to the truck. No need to drag around the trailer in that case. I'll definitely do this again though, the trailer part was interesting.

So at least my CC01 got out in the woods, if only briefly. :)

I've been making good on my resolution, quite a few trucks have been out now and had some very nice trail runs. Sadly, no Tamiya other than the CR01's just yet, though CC01 day is coming. :) I need to go to a less aggressive spot for the CC's, other than my portalled truck they are not exactly hardcore trucks. I've got a nice scale trail with plenty of challenges for them, hoping to get down there soon.

Having said that, thought I'd post a few more pics of what I've been running this summer.

Had both of my minis out during last week's camping trip: TRX4M and SCX24 Betty. The M is a fantastic little platform, I liked it so much I ordered another.

My pieced together VS410. In the background is a Sport I picked up recently via trade - my daughter was wheeling it.

Project "non crawler" Slash and Telluride. The Telly is a beast, crawls as good as anything I have.

My Crawler converted C-Maxx, recently rebuilt with an all new chassis with 4WS and lower CG. It'll get another test run this summer.

The Carbon TRX4 - Injora carbon chassis with some well built axles.

The De-portalled Sport. No portals, retains the diff lockers and 2 speed and a Sport body

My UMG10 mentioned above, one of my best crawlers.

Finally got another Tamiya out.. Dyna time! Every time I run this rig, I'm blown away with how capable it is... it drives almost like a tank. It tends to nose up until the weight shifts over the center wheels and then it crashes back down. Full time 4WS is a must since it has dogbones, but it is pretty nimble. Takes a few minutes to get the hang of wheeling it, but once I'm in the zone it goes pretty much anywhere. Pretty planted, and plenty of nuts on 2S. I love this truck, it's one of my favorites to wheel.

20231001-095618-SM.jpg

Absolutely climbs like a beast. I'm not sold on the Hyrax tires honestly, I think some PL TSL's would take this to the next level. Hmm... I could add a bit more weight since it's oddly on the light side, but I don't want to add any more really, it's just more wear and tear on the portals, and they are somewhat hard to find anymore.
20231001-103755-SM.jpg

Walked all over my test rock. Didn't even break a sweat.
20231001-103847-SM.jpg

I can't get through this line with any of my 1/10 trucks, but the Dyna is just low enough and has just enough grip to pull it off.
20231001-105321-SM.jpg

Two for two! One of the coarse threaded shoulder screws backed out, pretty common with these screws...after inspection, several were working their way out. Been wheeling this for a while, even through a G6 so it's time for a go over to check everything out. I haven't walked a truck out of the woods all year, I was 3 for 4 today. Ouch!
