I was thinking....ok I lied I happened to have a spark of thaught come to me while trying not to work at work. I was wanting to see if there was a kind of "keep it in the family/community" mentality among TC members. I hate to see vintage kits get **** torn outta them, I understand that they get run and bashed but fixed instead of letting them die and then thrown out. Just wanted to know.

Don't quite understand the question but as one of the worst culprits for thrashing vintage Tamiyas I guess I'd better try an answer! [;)]

For me the fun is builidng, modifying and running. I don't get that much pleasure from looking at cars on shelf, especially as my shelves are out in the barn not in the house.

I don't throw any cars away, if my cars break I buy spares to repair them. True, after a year there may not be much of the original left but it still runs. If parts become too difficult to source then I restore the car and then it sits on a shelf. I generally try and buy up lots of spares and keep my vintage runners to a few of the more robust. As I don't really like having cars sat on a shelf and not being used I generally sell off the cars that aren't used before I'm tempted to wreck them again. I try and sell through the club wherever possible but sadly many go to ebay.

I have regretted selling some of my more precious cars because I've found out later that they were wrecked by people without the experience to fix them properly and I fear that many of them ended up being scrapped or stripped for spares.

Ultimately people are going to do what they please with their cars. I guess it comes down to you level of tolerance. My 12 year old neighbor and his friends cheered when he lauched his King Blackfoot into the street which landed on it's shell that shattered into four pieces. We have the wanton destruction of Mini's from PurpleBugsy. We have Moosey busting into NIB kits and building them. Where does the blasphemy end?

My thought is if it's NIB, then keep it that way. IF it's mint then keep it on the shelf. But if its a basket case like this one

Then run it like you stole it.

Personally I would build any NIB kit I had or was given, how can you enjoy it otherwise, but on the other hand I wouldn't run it to the point of destruction for the sake of it.

I build all my kits and use them sparingly and carefully,it might be just me but I still like my stuff to look good.

This is why I think NIB Tamiyas will be very, very valuable in the future. People just can't resist building them, and eventually there will be very few left. I've got a mint NIB Madcap that I planned to build, but it pains me to break such a nice kit that has been that way for a good 15 years previously. I may yet do it, as ultimately that's a fun part of owning Tamiyas, but it will be a shame! If there were more new builts available for sale I would probably buy them instead.

[?]why have a nib kit? what use is it in bits? i'd just have to build it and run it. they are there to be enjoyed and USED, i can't imagine getting the same grin from looking at all the parts in the box as i get from running my cars. i dunno, it just seems wrong.

I thought i may as well chip in with my sentiments on this one since it's tortures me on a daily basis

Personally i don't see the point of keeping kits in the box unbuilt, but for this very reason i avoid them because if i had one i know i couldn't resist building it since it's magic to experience the build with all new parts and see the sparkling end result with all nice new screws, bolts and nuts etc. If i did build a NIB kit i know i would also feel bad at the end for doing it. I guess this is the reason why i have so far pain-stakingly tracked down each individual NIB part for my new built cars.

I think that a vintage new built shouldn't really be run. I love seeing them in mint condition on the shelf and do get a lot of enjoyment from just looking at them actually. For me there's a lot of memories of childhood wrapped up in them. Since it's a crime in my mind also not to run at least some of them though i have also put together runners from old spares of the ones i really wanted to run. You could call it the best of both worlds and i guess i'm not that different from most members in this respect.

I think that people have different reasons for having the cars they do. I remember as a child looking at certain cars and its these I have NIB and they will never get built. It brings back good memories for me. I do however enjoy searching out new parts to build a car from scratch. Again most of these cars will never get run. I have runners that serve this purpose.
