Rumor has it that it only takes 3 hours to build a Grasshopper, one for the chassis/body, and another for fitting each rear tire onto their rims!

I just built a green Grasshopper, can confirm this is true.

A little update in case if you're still debating

I've driven a hopped up Rising Fighter (Ampro upgrades, oil shocks), a Grasshopper, a Radioshack Blackwolf (basically a copy), and a Hornet. Of the three I preferred the Grasshoppers simplicity and looks, all three bounce, roll over, and handle... not great.

If you're set on a solid axle buggy, I'd reccomend a Grasshopper 2 with oil shocks, part no 9005919 is a Rising Fighter part thats supposed to reinforce the shock tower (same chassis).

The Rising Fighter drove the best, but it didn't have the same style to it. I wasn't a fan of the enclosed motor either (I like my brushed motors to be able to breathe).

The Hornet looks the best imo, but you will quickly rip the rear wing off in a roll over, and the battery tray will randomly fly off without some tape over it. The metal shocks are next to useless, but an amusing addition to a chassis this basic.

The original Grasshopper is the most basic, and the cheapest. Without the pivoting rear end it rolls over far more than a Hornet on anything more than a 380 motor.

If really do want to minimize roll overs or frontal crashes with these cars, as the shock and bumper mounts are a part of the chassis.

Otherwise, pick the one that looks the best to you, they're all ultimately very similar.

I've considered a Grasshopper on and off since 1984 but just never got around to grabbing one. I do like the way they look but if I were to get a swing axle vehicle, it would either be the GH2, Lunchbox or the newly announced Pajero. I really like the idea of a cheap basher with the associate bouncy performance. The LB and Pajero get the nod over the GH2 because the tires are larger and more versatile. I'm eagerly awaiting finding out how much the new Pajero will be, hopefully not too much more than a LB.

Their tires won't go bald if you drive on pavement, plus the CW-01 chassis is a bit sturdier than a Grasshoppers.

Hello,

I would like to offer my 2 cents. I own a grasshopper, grasshopper 2, hornet, and a super storm dragon. The grasshopper is my favorite looking, but my super storm dragon handles the best.

The biggest difference between the grasshopper and a hornet is, 1.motor size, 2. motor pinion size, 3. rear wheel tread, and last the gearbox to chassis mounting is different.

The grasshopper is fixed and can only move up and down, were as the hornet, grasshopper 2, super storm dragon, and super hornet, the gearboxes have a metal rod that will allow

the front to articulate a little bit. As for the bouncing around this can be fixed with very soft springs and thin oil in the shocks. A 5th shock might be required.

Hornet and grasshopper front end is the worst, but this can be fixed with a few mods from the super hornet or grasshopper 2.

I run only brushless motor on my re-release cars, like my super storm dragon has a 10.5 motor from tamiya runs great but, only NiMH batteries to run them.

I'm sure there are points i have missed, but i could say more but i would like to read some more on this topic. :)

Same here, but I only want the wheels!

I'm planning to convert a GH2 into a true road car using that new Pajero wheelset and some touring car tires.

I am leaning towards the same thing. There are things about the GH2 that's appealing such as the body clips to hold the battery tray shut. Just unsure what body would fit. Maybe it's time to learn styrene and plastic glue and hack something up really weird like a red Caboose with a Hemi in the back?

You can make a couple of different lexan bodies fit just by finding a way to screw in some CC-01 mounts. The wheelbase is 251mm, plenty of older buggy shells and a few rally cars if you want something different.

I wish tamiya re releases super hornet.. i would be a happy camper

I feel like a re-release of the Super Hornet would be well received.
