Box art love/hate

Recommended Posts

While I do love an orange sports car, there are entirely too many boring Jäegermeister  liveries.

Virtually of my vintage collection is boxart, either the front of box, or the Tamiya alternitive or second driver in the case of the F1 cars.

The only models i have which are not painted boxart, is a vintage Lambrghinini Countach which i have painted in the Walter Wolfe blue livery, and my Subaru Brat/Super Champ hybrid thing.

Its the same with the decals, if the model is based on a real car, i wont fit any decals that do not appear on the real thing.

Out of the 30 cars I own, the only must have in box art are:

Grasshopper

Lunchbox

Monster Beetle

Fox

Close-but-not-quite:

Bullhead (painted purple with standard decals to honor its real-life namesake, Super Pete)

Blitzer Beetle (candy apple green and pearl white paint with standard decals)

I think Tamiya missed the mark on this box art.

I mean, this.

I would have preferred something a little more mature (below is a TC member's DN01).

They could have sold 5 times as many if Tamiya hadn't asked a 7 year old girl to design it (I'm making stuff up out of despair, because DN-01 is a fantastic chassis).

And Karmann Ghia.

The actual car is a tiny 800kg thingy with a 50 horsepower engine.  The box art should've been light, airy and happy.

(I think this orange Mini Z + Tamiya 24 static shell belonged to a TC member.)

Maybe Tamiya thought Karmann was a posh & gloomy sedan that weighs 1.5 ton?

The box art is as muted as it gets.

If they must go with dark blue, a sportier box art might have worked better.

On the other end of the spectrum,

I love the box art of Wild Willy 1.  Showing the object you are buying is secondary here.

It's saying "Look at the dirt it's kicking up! This is the kind of fun you'll have."   This art is selling fun, not plastic and metal bits.

I love the box art for Wild Willy Jr. too (though, this isn't RC). liZ7UDy.jpg

I think the fact that Tamiya released it with pink wheels in the domestic market and white wheels in all others indicate that they knew very well what they were doing when choosing the livery and boxart. They just maybe should have taken it a step further and gone for a more "serious" look overall for the export market? By the way, looking like a twoseater, I've always wondered how the Zahhak would have looked in a Wild One livery.

Oh my 7yo girl will love that. Cannot find one anywhere now so had to just make her a GH2 in glitter pink.

Never knew this. Kind of regret painting mine black now.

honestly of the relatively few models (as compared to everyone here) in my case the Thunder Dragon does need the box art on it. the design vibe of it is sleek and cool in its own right. it has an 80s or 90s? vibe that must be recreated.

Completely agree but I would add that The OAG RC's (YouTube) Star Wars/X-Wing theme is very fitting.

@Busdriver :wub:

@Juggular that zahhak is pretty bad. For me It’s because of the awful quality of the dragon illustration. The alt version is much better but it’s still an odd shell in terms of proportions.
