2013 ReRe Egress Bigger Pinion advice for racing

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I race my Egress in my club's "Vintage" Class which allows pre-95 models restricted to 2s Lipo, with the motor of choice being Kyosho G2X (20T) - we are NOT permitted brushless.

Does anyone know

a) what the current/stock pinion spec is? 22T? what pitch?

b) how big of a pinion can I have with this brushed setup? [teeth and pitch please]

The other vintage cars are burning me off down the straights by several car lengths.

I'm a noob to the tamiya world, not so much for buggy racing. Thanks

Yes stock pinion is 22 tooth, it is a 0.6 mod pinion, buy a hardened or steel pinion

I think you probably wouldn’t need to go higher than a 23 or 24 tooth pinion with a brushed motor.

‘Are you running 2.2 modern rims and tyres ? or standard Egress rims and tyres? The 2.2 modern will give you better top end

Thanks Snappy1. Yes - running standard buggy tyres from my Associated 4wd on astroturf indoors. I will start my shopping. +1/2 teeth is only a 4.5/10% gain. which the motor should tolerate and let me keep up with everyone else - I'll try get it going for this Saturday and post some feedback. Cheers

Back in the days I have used at least a 23 tooth pinion in my Vanquish which is the same as Egress with silver and black cans. But that was with kit rims. But with a fan you should be able to go a bit up to compete with the other cars. But I do not remember at the moment, which is the biggest possible pinion with the given spur gear.

The original Egress had an available pinion spread from 16T to 23T.  The a 20T was recommended for the Technigold and an 18T for the Dynatech 01R. Part of those recommendations probably also dealt with race duration given the state of battery technology in those days along with the usual motor heat/loading concerns.
