Scale Technics BMW e30 M3 Macau / JTCC / Hill climb

Recommended Posts

Project Start: 2023

Chassis - TRF419 / XV02

Body - L&L Models / TeamC Bmw e30

Electrics - LRP / SpeedPassion

Paint - TBD Tamiya PS

Ambitions

- DIY livery / Decals

- Functioning driving lights with brake.

- Replicate RWD by running only rear belt / rear Diff / rear drive cups

- Rear e brake?

Cockpit with cage, full spare wheel/tire textile harnesses

As the title and name suggests a JTCC / Macau / Hill climb inspired Bmw M3 e30 build. I love doing less common liveries or bodysets so I’m thinking of doing the SOK livery from the JTCC racing series, alternatively a Motul / Rothmans rally livery. I have had the bodyset since 2020, it comes with a nicely 3D printed front grill, M3 Evo rear wing and wing mirrors.

A thread start and a few reference images as inspiration to ignite the fire and create some ownership to the project.

Would be cool to see the Sok livery. Haven't seen one before :)

Great choices - I’d be delighted to see either TBH, slight preference to Rothmans though 👌

Option 3 : JPS Australian Touring Car - The goldness of the decals would be difficult to achieve but a e30 m3 would look fantastic in black.

- Rear e brake?

Looking forward to that project.

RWD conversions on touring cars do work correctly and are a lot of fun to drive. You do have to be careful whenever using the brakes as the car can spin out; easy to remedy if you dial down brake power in the ESC.

What did you mean by 'Rear e brake'?

@Pylon80 RWD - Yes, Although I have never done it. I imagine it works well to remove the necessary front belts / dogbones / diffs / etc to reduce the number of drive wheels of your preference. I have RWD RC experience with F1 and 1/12 pan cars, definitely very fun but challenging you really need to be deliberate with throttle and brake inputs. Helps that both have enormous sticky tires smoothered in traction sauce on sticky carpet :D.

I´m thinking for all my non track only builds the power will be very down tuned / modest electronics set in for light hearted scale fun and reasonable driveway use.

E brake - I came across this I have no idea what it is or how it works, but i saved it in my archives to dig up when the time comes, it´s a AARMA model specific item but it states it´s a handbrake module? Bizzare and cool. It locks your rear wheels somehow. I likely won´t go this route but it was interesting enough to look into at least.

" This Handbrake Module is supplied assembled and ready to fit to your ARRMA All-Road model FEATURES Adds a mechanical brake to the rear wheels of your vehicle, allowing you to perform handbrake turns and initiate drifts - Supplied sub-assembled for quick and simple installation to your vehicle - Manufactured from strong steel and tough composite materials - Requires a standard size servo and a three channel radio system - 23, 24 and 25T servo horns supplied INCLUDES

Cut out and Mocked up lexan. Body quality isn’t 100% either are the inserts but they’re available so that’s excellent! Tastefully completed and it’ll look great.

Alot of taping based on studying reference photos. A simple livery, but I still want to get the proportions as close as possible to reality.

Loving how the hard parts look, the rear wing and front grill look excellent in their respective base primer colour.

Solid progress, alot of taping and 3-4 light coats of each colour. Looking really good so far I am happy. It is one of my favourite cars I am excited about this one.

I will let it all rest a few days and clean up any leaks in the red or blue. ( and wait for the gold to arrive )

I just wanted to mention how I love the second picture where it's quite clear that the car is scrapping 😲😅🤣

Looking forward to the gold and white!

Mirrors went through their putty and primer rounds.  ( look so much better then the kit supplier ones! )

I layed down all layers of paint and colour now. Each colour has 3-4 coats plus 3 coats of backing. Some are backed twice ( white, then silver ) with a final backing of black for all.

I decided to leave the thin red strip down the bodyside as a vinyl sticker I will manually cut and add afterwards on the outside to make sure it is sharp and crisp.

Overall I’m happy where it has gotten to, it’ll be cleanup from here on and digital logo work. Love the rear lamp depth already and the front grill! This might be a runner up to my Lancia Stratos in terms of visual impact.

Great work dude. What colours did you use, are they Tamiya? Thinking I may paint the blue bits on my Rothmans Escort, hoping you'll say this is PS-4 blue...

@ChrisRx718

Thank you!, Quiet simply -

PS-60 Bright Mica Red

PS-4 Blue

With an underestimated as always the large quanties one needs of white, silver and black for backing .

@Chris.B Thank you! It’s mainly down to perseverance, a little bit every day. I am shooting from the hip here but this is maybe my 50th 1:10 bodyset.. and like 50-60 1/24 scale models in my lifetime. 95% of those were no good 😄

My Motul/Rothamans decals came in the other day. I am very happy how they turned out. All the trial and error as well as effort to get pays off when holding the final product.

I opted for using vinyl for the red pinstripe down the sides as I wanted to make sure it is 100% sharp on both edges.
