When the somewhat cryptic information trickled through about 4 weeks ago that the next new item in the Tamiya Hop-Up series would be "Hornet Onepiece 26mm Wheels", I expected them to be wheels suitable for using the BBX tires on the Hornet, Frog and Grasshopper. And indeed they are, albeit the primary intended purpose is for Rally Block and Rock Block tires. Anyway, these wheels offer a variety of possibilities in a simple and very affordable set (at 5-10 EUR/GBP/USD for the set of four):

22077 Large Diameter Hornet Rally Block Wheels

Description:

The set includes one-piece large diameter rims (front and rear) also compatible with the new R/C model Mitsubishi Pajero (CW-01) (58727).

These wheels are Hornet, Grasshopper and Frog compatible Hop-Up Option parts.

The 26mm width for Touring cars allows installation of 50476 “Rally Block Tires” and 54598 “Rock Block Tires CC-01” on Hornet, Grasshopper and Frog models.

Item features:

• Large diameter rims in one piece x2 (for each of the front and rear wheels).

• Compatible with Hornet, Grasshopper and Frog. Use with tires 50476 “Rally Block Tires” and 54598 “Rock Block CC-01 Tires”.

• Tire diameters differ from the standard ones in the kit. Please note that it is recommended to check the correct transmission ratios and to equip the mechanics with bearings.

• Cut the front bumper if the tires come into contact with it.

I think these will open up a lot of options for vintage 2wd chassis owners. Look forward to seeing plenty of builds with touring, rally, BBX and crawler tyres on them!

Although the Montero/Shogun "wheelie" that they have been introduced for is another strange release from Tamiya.

I think the option of mounting 1.9 crawler tires on a BF is intriguing…

It made me smile, anyway :D

Are the intended Rally Block tires the same types that were fitted to the DF-03ras? We could see some genuine 2WD touring cars on these wheels, too, then - although I guess the use of 2WD front adapters is well-established and gives more rim choices...

I've always thought the "Fox" wheels and tires looked wrong on the Wild One, whereas SRB wheels and tires looked too small on the Wild One. These new wheels with BBX tires just might be the solution for realistic and appropriately sized wheels and tires for the Wild One. We've just waited 38 years! :P

I'm both surprised and pleased to see some sort of hop-up for the older models, my Hornet could use a new set of tires and I already have Brat wheels/tires on my Frog.

Game changer! It's about time we got some different kinds of bearing front wheels! (Hopefully the fronts are sold separately.)

I could see using a set for tarmac driving on various cars, as well as a set with the CC01 tires for another ORV idea I've got cooking

The rears are the standard hex 12mm?  If so that would be great to get for my GF01's..  I just saw a cool WR02 (might be a GF01) Jimny on instagram I wanted to do my own version on down the road since I have a spare body for the car.

This is fantastic news 😀  I'm going to assume by the designation of " hornet" that the rear wheels will have the corresponding shaping to be driven by the big circular drive hub thing that is on the frog , brat, lunchbox, pumpkin, monster beetle , blackfoot etc as well as the grasshopper and hornet.maybe there will be a few styles of bbx tyres coming too? Fingers crossed

I felt exactly the same way.

I second that...or 3rd that 😁 I have a ...errr umm ...fast attack hornet ...a wild one / fav / hornet hybrid that those new wheels could be perfect for.esp with the bbx tyres.

Between these new wheels, the hornet aluminium clamp style wheel drives and the cw01 aluminium motor mount , Tamiya are certainly giving us some long awaited goodies 😀

So there's always been a 'way' to do this using existing Tamiya parts; but the obscure Quikdrive or QD chassis front wheels would be needed and these aren't exactly common.

Some interesting options for sure - like CC01 "hockey puck" hard tyres for some car park bashing without worrying about those precious spikes!

Huh, I actually like the wheels that come with the WildOne..  well not so much in white, but I was happy to see the BHM ones came pre-painted silver so that I did not have to get the alloy version for it.   Good thing we have variety to make everyone happy...

Those chunky 5 spokes probably look okay on trucks and some sedans, perhaps?

So these are ~1.9" rims?  Are there any classically spiky tires out there that match up well?

I'd like to see the back to see if it is original hornet style or 12mm.

Falcon/Striker rears (aka Thundershot tires) are 1.9 and fit on most touring car rims and crawler beadlocks, so they should fit these as well.

Interesting - JConcepts do a Double Dee tyre that works on modern astro and sort of fits Brat / Rough Rider rear wheels, but only sort of, as they have to be glued on and they're only just on the rim.  They stretch nicely over 1.9 touring rims but of course those have exactly the same fitting problems on an SRB as a modern buggy rim, i.e. once you have a hex conversion big enough to clear the shock, you don't have much thread left to screw the wheel on.

If these new rear wheels are a direct fit on to a Frog / SRB style drive flower, they should allow a Double Dee tyre to fit neatly and still bolt up without any clearance issues on the SRB.  Hornet drive flowers are very slightly wider, if a bit more clearance is necessary.

What a peculiar choice that is? Somewhat limits the versatility of these parts, especially as the rim design is not familiar either - ie. there is no 12mm hex version of this design.

Swing and a miss in my opinion. Especially as the CW01 chassis can accept hex wheels rather easily with a wider hex or #53913 Hop Up. Shame.

Does anyone know if these will be paintable or if they'll have to be dyed?

Also is anyone aware of a release date? I see them listed in various online stores but they're all backorder/preorder or not in stock yet, at least here in the US.

I ordered two sets from rcmart.  I’ll try dying when I get them, but i suspect no go.
