58727 pajero on cw-01 chassis release

Recommended Posts

Looks incredible - I'm impressed with how good it looks with those smaller wheels too.

I wonder if the GH pinion might work too, if those wheels are more GH size than LB?

I would be one this like anything but a) it's not 1/12 scale b) I'm already trying to trim collection and c) I would paint it crap.

I saw that too..  I would much prefer the rere of the original 58044, but we can't have everything we want, I guess.

But it's good that this means I can have spare bodies for my original 58044.  I want to do one in the factory Pajero theme as well.  Mine is a military theme with Willy on board.  I still have the original decals that came with the kit along with alloy wheels.

Tires from 3 speeds?  They look alright, but aren't they kinda hard?

I also prefer the 58044.

What a good release! AND a good visual for those new wheels! Looks like a set of brat wheels and tyres is all that could be needed to go old school too. Can't wait to see the manual on how they mount the battery ( and what kind of battery) also.

I have pretty much the entire chassis in parts minus the body and suitable pogo stick pistons for the front springs, for a project pajero .... guess I could use them as spares for this kit?😁

***edit after looking at the pics more***

Oh ... its more of a lunchbox chassis than the pajero one? The re re version with the new wheels n tyres but minus the decal set.that's kinda odd ? I genuinly thought it was the grasshopper 1 tabbed gearbox type like the original , guess battery placement was the issue?

AND cvas too...guess the front pistons are an issue also? * sad face *

I built something akin to this about 10 years ago and it was pretty fun. Consequently, I also ran an original Pajero around the same time and it was kinda awful. I can see why Tamiya went this way as well as the earlier  58499 CW01 based "Montero" wheelie. I love the looks of the vintage 58044 Pajero which is a beautiful bit of kit but I personally found it a poor runner that seemed intent on landing on its lid, damaging that beautiful hardbody. The high COG from the top mounted hump pack and hard body plus the grasshopper-type single action gearbox pivots did it no favors in the handling department. Its wheelie stablemate at the time, the M38 Wild Willy was the superior vehicle in my eyes. This new version looks to be much more usable.

Disclaimer: Sorry if my opinion on the running characteristics of the original Pajero (which still looks the most attractive to me however) offended anyone or hurt their feelings. They were just my personal findings and not meant to discourage anyone. Your milage may vary.

I like it! And yeah, those wheels are going to come in really handy for other builds.

Wasn't planning on buying anything for a while, but first the Fiat 131 and now this... Tamiya has got my number, it seems.

Those wheels are certainly a big and welcome addition , what a huge range of possiblities they open up.

Which is why it strikes me as kinda odd? Surely if I had bought the re re couldn't I just get the wheels and cvas ....boom .. then I have this new version too?

I saw the box art and the battery location is hidden , then the photo shows it has the lunchbox/pumpkin parts to raise the chassis to fit the battery , I initially thought it was the " low slung" og chassis and maybe they had the "m" size life battery placed in the belly of the tub.guess not

Yeah it looks like they went low with the battery, slider on the gearbox mount, and possibly even oil filled dampers?!?!

For something like this, I feel like the goal is to be as bouncy as possible without frustrating the driver with flipping over.  The oil filled dampers are kinda a surprise

Maybe the front arms are grasshopper2 type for the front cva dampers?the mounting point is way lower on those arms so the dampers could have abit of travel to the stroke rather than the use of C brackets the original type would have?

I'm pretty sure this is just a Lunch Box chassis (which was built on the the bones of the original Pajero, though the chassis tubs aren't exactly the same) with oil filled shocks, a Pajero body and the new tire/wheel arrangement.

Yup, that's my understanding of it too.  Any info I've seen on it relates it to a newer version of the 58499 Monero Wheelie, not the OG 58044 kit.

I'm not sold on the wheel & tire combo personally, but it'd be an easy swap to get some "normal" CW-01 shoes on there for any of us that like their CW01's monster trucky and silly!

Saito2 , I think you're right , my initial excitement of reading about those new wheels , then seeing them on this new pajero had my brain scrambling that Tamiya had taken the original pajero route.sadly not the case BUT it is a good release due to the shell and wheels and the new model in general will ,as you mentioned, be the better handler with a 540 motor.

Depending on the price and if there are any "catches", I might pick one of these up. CW-01s a good basic chassis and it'd be nice to have one with CVAs and "normal" wheels.

I have beed wracking my brain countless hours measuring the pros and cons of each of the models I am interested in for my next project. I have always enjoyed the idea of the Lunchbox but something was holding me back. This little critter is exciting to say the least. I can picture t painted in a desert tan color with the .Mil thing going on or even a squint scale Dakar kinda look. This thing checks most it not all the boxes for my next project. Providing the price goes in around the LB range I am in like Flynn.

It kinda has a vibe like this Jimny which if you ask me is one of the more fun projects I've seen. This may be blasphemous but I see a fun indoor runner to pop wheelies and chase the dog around the house while it's 118 degrees outside. The CW01's wheel base looks a touch longer and possibly more stable.

The CW01 does drive better than the 58044, but as you said the hump back sized battery the car needed was probably the issue in addition to tools probably worn out and not enough demand to retool.

That said, I have a bunch of humpbacks for my M38’s so that is not an issue for me.. plus, other older cars like the SRB does not take standard NiCd NiMH sport packs so I thought maybe 58044 had a chance.   :D   oh well.   it’s fine, I just want another body for kicks at this point.

Yup , it's deff fine 👍 plenty of scope for tinkering with and body availability and those wheels are good news

I guess if one considers the WW2 a M38 re-make , then I think CW01 does qualify as a remake of the 58044 chassis.   The 58044 to me shares a lot of the M38's design concept, while much simpler and cheaper to make.. perhaps even more durable too.   In that sense I suppose the WR02 is leagues ahead in design.. although decades old now.

This one fails the AliExpress test for me.

If you saw it on the aforementioned Chinese marketplace, from a brand you'd never heard of, you wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

Proportions are all wrong, tyres too small and far too much plastic chassis on display. It just looks like a cheap toy.

The previous big-wheel versions look SO much better, if Tamiya are trying to fool us into thinking this is a more "scale" effort they must be kidding.

Another lazy combination of old tooling that will end up in the discount bins like so many other recent Tamiya releases.

I wish that more of their kits would end up in the discount bin!

Imo, most CW-01s look and feel like "cheap toys". But that's the trade off for something basic and low maintenance. The "rally wheels" make it look like Tamiyas earlier scale off-roaders like the Brat.

For me the wheels do look on the small side, however some Monster Beetle rims and spikes tyres would fill the wheel arch gap - which makes this almost a Montero from memory?

The tyres aren’t from early 3 speed though, not the Toyota Hilux anyway.

It’s a bit of fun and a typical Tamiya rehash - but I’m not bothered one way or the other.

I’m easily confused being of a certain age so can I paraphrase this thread. What we have here is a lunchbox chassis, that only takes humpback batteries?, has the lovely little Pajero hard body, a new set of 1.9 inch bearing front wheels and an undefined rear wheel fitting. It also runs on a set of tyres that are new. Possibly has oil shocks!!! What have I missed???

I wouldn't swear by the hump batteries but to the rest of it, I think you are spot on with your recap. I still want one and will have one providing the cost. Should be in around the Lunchbox Black I am guessing.
