Well, I guess the title says it all - dumb me did not check the original setup with calipers before taking off the pinion from the now ex-motor in my Mini. :(

In the manual I got with it, it says nothing, but is there a standard width (it says 15 mm between shim on the motor and the outer end of the pinion in the Mad Fighter manual) for all builds? Or better, yet, does someone really know? :D

The kit comes with a jig to align the pinion to the shaft.. I never measure it, but my guess is like 15-16mm from base of motor to the outer edge of pinion?  Not sure..

Yes, I read the manual a bit better ... "pinion stopper 50794" apparently. But going from your guess, it would be a total 15 mm (since the shim is 1 mm). I may have to order a bag of pinions anyways.

What I do is match the manual visually,

Look up "tamiya m03 manual", Tamiya has it uploaded. Go to page 6 and match the distance in the illustration.

Some steel pinions are wider, which can make it trickier to match the manual. Yeah Racings pinions are generally spot on.

I have the manual to the 58211 (my car), and I looked at the Monte Carlo '94 (58163) manual too. I have to print page 6 from the M-03M or M-03R manual on the Tamiya homepage, and see if I can match it up. Thanks!

I actually took a spare silver can I had and placed a spare pinion with the jig just now and measured it.  It was 17mm..  I tried it using 2 different pinions so should be close.  16-17mm is where you want to be, I think.  GL

Thanks, folks!

The other motor that came in the package (I'll ask about that one in another thread) has a pinion on it, and that reads 17 mm with the calipers.
